Goro almost leapt out of his skin as the gatling arm swung right for them. Obviously, he’d made a mistake underestimating how difficult this would be. At least Nick seemed to grasp the basics of driving enough by now to dodge it, but Goro could hardly rely on that keeping up. Knowing Nick, he could easily screw up and drive right into one, or perhaps even aim for one hoping to injure the bat.
Goro was still a little shaken inside as they rushed past the robot. There were three ahead, and Goro could no longer predict what the hell they were going to do. Did they have anything else up their sleeves? Even if they didn’t have anything else besides the paint and the hammer manoeuvre, the unpredictability was an issue.
He was halfway to vaulting off the platform into the air when Nick opened his fucking mouth again. Goro froze in place, his hand gripping around the handrail so tightly he swore he was going to pull it off. He would love to scream some rebuttal about how at least he didn’t screw up everything Mother had tasked him with, but he found himself coming up short.
All he could get out was “SHUT UP!” before he took off towards the remaining robots, seething with rage. Nick would certainly already be laughing at him conceding, but continuing to not help when it’d only screw them both over would only end up worse.
The closest robot sputtered as its gun revved up to speed. As it let loose its paint spray, Goro swerved in the air, keeping a wide space between himself and the paint. Coming close to the robot, though, it became harder to avoid the paint, and the right arm of his suit ends up splattered.
“For fucks sake…” He muttered as he landed on the robot with a thud. Thankfully, the control panel on the back was rather simplistic; a couple switches, seemingly to change the robot’s mode of ‘attack’ and their speed, along with a larger red power switch. The robot’s gatling gun swung around, knocking Goro’s right leg right off of it. It took wrapping one of his arms around the gun to hold it in place long enough to get his balance. He immediately flipped the power switch and leapt from the robot, returning to the kart to be sure Nick didn’t try and leave him behind.

To Nick’s relief, his idiot waste of space brother actually listened to him for once and took off towards the advancing machines. He was not too surprised his tactic of mocking Goro had worked; the bat’s self-esteem was as fragile as glass.
(Nick sadly failed to notice the irony there).
As Goro landed on one of the robots and set about deactivating it, the other two focused on Nick. One of them raised its gatling arm for the deadly hammer strike attack while the other readied its guns to fire. They were both close together with only a small gap between them, but it was big enough for the kart to fit through. An idea struck Nick and he made straight for the gap.
The robot readying to slam its arm turned in the direction of the gap as the kart went speeding by. At the same moment, the other robot turned towards the gap to fire at the kart. The first robot’s arm came hurtling down and crashed upon the second robot with a metallic crunching sound that could be heard for miles. The arm went straight through the other robot’s body and appeared to get stuck, leaving the first robot immobilised and the second a wrecked, sparking pile of shattered metal.
“See that, Goro?” Nick called with all the glee of a child, his previous paint-splattering forgotten in his moment of triumph. “I took out two at once! I’d say ‘beat that’, except I know you can’t!”
He turned another corner that looped them back around. He could see the line they had started from not far ahead.
Shit, I hope we won’t be expected to pay for the damage done to those stupid tin cans though. Because if we are then I’m leaving Goro to that mess.

Goro winced as the sounds of scraping and crunching metal filled his ears for a brief, hellish moment. God, Nick must know what shit like that feels like to him, he HAD to have done it on purpose! Thankfully, it wasn’t enough to interrupt his flight, and he landed on the kart safely.
Nick was trying to insult him again, but Goro was no longer struggling to find something to shoot back with. “I disabled mine gracefully and carefully. You’ll be lucky if they don’t try and get you to pay for the damages, you idiot! There’s no way they have a whole fleet of these things made just for this, they obviously didn’t want us damaging them!”
The end of the track was coming up, thank God. Soon, he could just leap off the kart and leave this mistake of a day behind. Hopefully, the military wouldn’t have anything to ask him, and would only focus on Nick’s obvious suspicious behaviour. He hadn’t done anything wrong as far as he was concerned, so as long as he could keep it together until they finished, he’d be fine.
His hand fell to the paint on his suit, and he internally cringed. He hadn’t brought clothes for more than a couple days at most with him to Japan, and even if the Underground shipped the rest of his clothes over they could potentially take weeks to arrive. Plus, he’d have to explain what had happened and ‘I just really wanted to mess with Nick’ certainly wasn’t going to be an acceptable reason for why. The paint on his wings was less of an issue, he still would’ve preferred not walking around with a paint splat rainbow on his back but that was easier to clean. His suit could take days at a drycleaner.

Nick was growing very tired of Goro having good points. It gave him little to retaliate with.
“Shut your face!” was all he could bark back.
The kart hurtled over the finish line. Nick deaccelerated until it came to a steady stop. He breathed, taking a quick pause to compose himself, then shot Goro a baleful look that silently conveyed two simple but critical words: Now what?
Did they fight again? His previous defeat at the hands of his idiot brother still stung as fresh as ever. He would have loved nothing more than another go at tearing off the stupid bat’s wings, but even he knew starting a fight when surrounded by armed soldiers was a poor idea. Did Goro, however?
Nick rose from the driver’s seat, still eyeing his brother warily. He slowly made his way back in the direction of the signup desk. He found the man behind the desk slumped in his chair with his head back and eyes closed. Loud snores emanated from his open, drooling mouth.
Nick stopped, folded his arms and shot Goro another dark look; “Well, I’m not going to wake him up.” He spoke quietly, at least, so perhaps what Goro had said before about being too suspicious had registered more than he would admit. “And before you get any bright ideas, if he does make me pay for the damage it’ll come out of Mother’s pocket, and you know damn well she’ll be angry at you for not stopping me. Maybe if you’d gone to deactivate the machines sooner I wouldn’t have had to do that!”
He began to walk away, though remained completely tense and alert.
“I’m going now,” he continued. “Don’t try to stop me. I’ll make sure it ends badly for both of us if you do.”
He had little doubt he would encounter Goro again, unfortunately. He at least hoped it would be under circumstances where he could punch him the way he wanted to and get away with it.
His thoughts soon went to the military camp, however. He still had no idea what to make of it. Nothing had tried to kill him this time, but he still felt suspicious of the place: all the soldiers he had met had seemed either violent or incompetent with little between. He needed to return to Nari’s house to think on the camp more.
…and wash off the damn paint.

Goro cackled as Nick yelled at him, a welcome distraction from his ruined suit. It was nice for the shoe to be on the other foot this time. As the finish line came up, Goro struggled to stop laughing, now more concerned about keeping a low profile again. It didn’t occur to him that someone who actually had fun with the karts might be laughing as they finished.
As the kart came to a stop, Nick glared at him, and Goro immediately understood what he meant. Now what, huh? As far as Goro was concerned, all he wanted to do was leave as soon as possible. The longer they spend together, the harder it’ll be to not be at each other’s throats quite literally, and surrounded as they were by armed military it would end poorly for the both of them. Plus, he was in no mood or condition to be fighting, and the longer they leave it, the longer Goro’s previous victory will torment Nick.
He didn’t bother to jump from the platform, instead climbing off slowly as someone not gifted with flight would have to do. There was no point in showing off at the moment, especially if their actions on the track had drawn unwanted attention already.
He followed behind Nick back to the sign-up desk, keeping a comfortable several feet away from him, and sighed with relief as he saw the man at the sign-up desk was napping. He hadn’t expected professionalism or competency from the military anyway, but this was the confirmation he needed to finally let go of his paranoia for the moment. Obviously, no one had noticed how suspicious Nick had been this whole time. They were in the clear.
What Nick said made Goro chuckle for a moment before responding. At the very least, Nick was smart enough to keep his voice down. “You’re under the impression Mother would be willing to pay for your mistakes still. Maybe if you hadn’t gone rogue she would, but certainly not now.” Goro said, equally as quiet as Nick. “None of what happened on the track was my fault. If you weren’t so brainless, maybe you’d have been able to cope with the robots without needing them deactivated.” Silently, Goro pushed the voice telling him Nick had a point to the back of his mind.
“I have no intention of keeping you here, believe me.” Goro replied. For a moment, he let Nick leave, watching the direction he was headed before heading off himself, making sure to go another way. If they ran into each other again any time soon, it would be better in a less public place. Somewhere dark, cold, and private, where Goro can finally get his revenge.
He looked down at his hand again, at the paint now smeared over it, and sighed quietly. If he was going to avoid running out of usable clothing, he was going to need some kind of income. There was no way he would sink so low as to beg for money from the Underground on account of a mistake like this.
