'Solar field?' Niji thought to herself. She had heard of many quirks before coming to UA, but this one was new to her. Toma-sensei explained and demonstrated how his quirk worked and Niji understood immediately understood why he needed support gear. He was basically like the sun- which meant that he could wipe everything out, including Japan itself. Whoever worked on his support gear would have to get every detail right and make sure that every measurement was on point. That why she was working so hard to get better at building tech. If a hero was depending upon her inventions, she needed to be sure that everything she made work correctly.
They were standing in front of two tables- one filled with scraps and junk and another one that had a white sheet over something. He pulled the sheet off and made a challenge to both of the students present. Build something that would stop him from melting the engine block to slag. Wait, what? He wanted them to build something to stop a man who is basically a sun? How the heck were they supposed to pull that off?
"Any ideas, Jin?" Niji asked her classmate. Maybe if they pooled their efforts together, they could come up with something to beat their sensei at his own game.

Interesting quirk sensei has as Jin watched him shoot a beam of light from the tip of his finger. The damage was obvious was it burned through the dummy and left a nasty burn on it as he examined the effects of it closely. Energy manipulation and conversion that allows him to shoot thermal blasts that can burn a target. Effects on a human may result in instant death depending on the entry point of the shot. Even grazing the target may result in cauterizing the wound almost instantly. Dangerous quirk which...also justifies the suit he needs. One is more surprised he never killed anyone during his time as a vigilante. But he sets that aside as he hears this challenge he presented them and what to work with.
Simple, effective, and he even provided materials to work with instead of finding it ourselves. He began to walk towards the tables of scrap and junk and pulled out his sketchbook to quickly jot down an idea in how to approach this challenge in the most effective way possible. The demonstration made it painfully obvious about how to take on this quirk and how to build around it. The real hurdle is the materials as most of it is junk but he has to make due with what he’s got to say the least. His brain starts to go to work as he nods as he was let off his leash as he rushed to the pile.
Niji asked about any ideas as he began to sketch something up. “A few….though a few of my ideas are a bit too simple in hindsight but time is off the essence and we need to get to building soon…”, he ripped a piece of paper out of his sketchbook and handed it to her to show the sketch of the gadget that shows a crude diagram of what it accomplishes. Its main function is to reflect and hopefully divert it away from the target in question. Another sketch shows a gadget that rapidly cools everything around it and another shows use of absorbing the sound and diverting it away into a battery of sorts. “ I present to you three options but that was as much I can think of in the short time, best make it quick because we need to find parts for this…”, Jin said as he shifted through the pile, taking out pieces of junk that were mostly intact and unscathed as he puts it into a pile. He adjusts his headp[hones so he can hear her better as he went to work as he took out the tools he always keeps on him and began to examine the engine block itself as he hears Niji’s answer.

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | "I'm going to start low." He turned his quirk back on and placed both hands around the busted engine. It was an aluminum alloy so it would be easy to melt, he wouldn't even come close to topping out. As he raised the temperature between his hands slowly to around 37 degrees Celsius (100-ish Fahrenheit) This test was multifaceted. Not only would he test their ingenuity and drive he would be checking their critical thinking. At this point the would be able to get close to him for a few moments, but as the temperate rises in one location, the surrounding air would heat too.
"If at any point either of you is harmed the test will end." He gave them serious looks as warm air buffeted away from him. "Be very careful about what you do and when you do it. My body has limited resistance to my own quirk that the two of you do not share." If he saw so much as reddened skin or a single blister start to form on them he would have to turn his quirk off. This test was dangerous since by his own estimation he would need to heat the engine block to temperates high enough to cause near-instantaneous heat stroke if someone was unprotected.
"You may begin."

Niji winced a bit at what Toma-sensei said. That made the job a little bit harder. Even if Niji could use her quirk to create something to stop Toma-sensei, none of it was strong enough nor heatproof. Meaning she would have to rely on the junk that was sprawled across the tables. "None of these are bad ideas, Jin-sama," Niji said using her quirk to create the tools she needed. "For the first one would need some type of glass or metal reflective plate that is strong enough to hold up against heat. For the rest we need a battery powerful enough to power the rest."
Niji wasn't sure if anything on the table was strong enough to hold up to the heat or stop Toma-sensei's quirk. But ingenuity was the name of the game. And Jeeves taught her how to play a long time ago. She started pulling the pieces from the junk pile such as car batteries, a broken motor, and broken car mirrors or metal rusted plates. "In theory the first one should work as a solar panel, reflecting the heat in a different direction and back to where it came from. Like a mini-satellite of sorts. We will also need to find a way to get close enough without harming ourselves in the process. I might be able to help with that. What do you think?"

Jin nodded to his mentor's words as he explained what the rules were for the challenge The heat he was putting out does put a massive challenge for building the device as his quirk easily melted through the material. The reflecting or absorbing the blast is the best way to pass but that is depending on the materials found here. It has to work and accomplish its function but make sure one does not cling to it too much since its going to get scrapped. He shifted through the various pieces of junk and found a few good pieces to start with.
“Absorption is a good idea but that is dependent on the materials we find in this pile...the three ideas I had lined up were somewhat similar to yours but aimed to redirect it somewhere else, another was a device that rapidly cools a plate down so it can absorb the heat and a engine that convert the light into fuel so it can run at a increased rate…”, he explained as he found pieces and components that he found that he used his quirk for a moment to check for any damage on them. Soon he accumulated a pile of pieces that were enough to build something but he still shifted through the larger pieces to see if it had any damage, specifically a somewhat large device that looks like it was once used for housing an engine. Other pieces that were of interest was a large solar panel, a box full of wires, eight batteries from multiple cars and a cannon that looks like it was gutted for parts for some ungodly reason. Placing his hands on it and activating his quirk in momentary bursts as he can try and see if it had any internal damage. Luckily it was undamaged alongside the other pieces as she set them aside.
He put his hand on his chin as he stared for a moment before he went to work. Quickly going into the battery and the solar panels, picking out the wires and getting out his tools. Connecting them piece by piece and making sure they match up to avoid any explosions or accidents in the power transfer.”Let's combine our plans and do something crazy….can you start building the frame and engine for this...we’re going to make a device that absorbs the energy from senseis shot and puts the energy into the batteries I have lined up. The motor will try and expel any excess energy to avoid an explosion. If you have any additions, feel free to say them now and try and see if it can work with the set up.”, he says to Niji as he puts his focus on connecting the wires to the panel and batteries first and foremost.

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | He could see the clock whirring in their heads. The kids were thinking about and making plans. Creative ideas to an almost impossible situation. They could maybe have succeeded if the game wasn't rigged against them. It was a shame, but he couldn't risk their safety just to pique his curiosity as to whether they could complete it.
He tried to hide his smile from them and keep them focused look as he increased the heat. The aluminum alloy engine began to glow at the sides closest to his palms. Some of the impurities on the surface began to burn and smolder, leaving little puffs of smoke in the air. At this point, the test was over, but he still wanted to see what they made. He would let them finish their prototype since it was a great learning moment for them.
Toma himself started to sweat a little, the skin around his palms were turning reddish from the heat emanating from them. "Time is almost up kids!" He called out to them over the crackle of burning paint and dirt on the engine block. "You better be quick about building your contraption. I'm starting to get bored over here!"
He decided that toying with them would provide some encouragements so he let his quirk flare even higher for just a moment. Enough to create a cascading burst of hot air that blew over the grass and fluttered the loose tarps on the ground.

"Sounds like a plan," Niji said to Jin as she started using her quirk to weld and put together parts. From the schematics, she could tell where the pieces go, but she was letting Jin guide this project. "You tell me where it goes, and I will put there," she said with a smile. Technically, this was his idea, so he should be able to take the lead on this one. Absorption might do the trick in order to stop Toma-sensei's quirk. Making the frame usually didn't take time, but the engine usually needed more work. But what could Niji do about it? In most situations, she would have to learn to think on the fly. So she calculated on the fly. This was the best shot they had to stop their pro-teacher.
Speaking of which… Niji felt a hot breeze that lifted the tarp of the table. “Umm...Jin,” Niji said nervously looking at her sensei. “What is the average temperature of a blow torch and how long does it take to blow through an old engine block?" Depending on what Jin said, Niji would respond with, “Because I don’t think we have that amount time left.” She pointed at Toma-sensei who turned up his quirk just a bit. Niji kicked into high gear, putting together the frame and anything else that Jin asked her to build.

"Follow the blueprints and I can trust your sense of judgement on how it can be strengthened, this project is a group effort after all”, Jin replied as he worked frantically at a steady pace to get the thing quickly made as they were on a time limit. The teacher was rather impatient to say the least as he worked rapidly, connecting various parts and using his quirk to make sure everything was aligned and sturdy enough to hold something.
As he worked, Jin can hear another question from Niiji as she asked a complicated question,”Well it depends on the metal the engine block is made and most of it is reliant on letting the air cool it down a fair bit from what I recall...why do you as-”, he replied as he glanced up to see the teacher upping the ante on his quirk as he began to work faster on the device. Which may have pissed Jin off a bit as he didnt like rushing work on things as he picked up speed.
He scribbled a bunch of things on a piece of paper and handed it to Niji.”Keep your pace up with me and follow the instructions, I have the blueprints in my head and if we both do this quickly we will be able to get this done in about three minutes flat”, He said as he handed her a tool as he went to town putting together the various pieces and parts for the device as he got faster and faster. Various parts locking into place as he used his quirk every 10 seconds to make sure all the circuits and parts fit and were in the right place as he kept glancing over at sensei.
“I assume you’re getting anxious or you enjoy this sort of things to people with no power...so please cool it sensei...unless you want an accident to happen and neither us would like that right now..”, Jin back talked as he put together another piece. It was around 70% complete on his end while Niji had the remaining 30% to complete but he can trust her as he did his best to keep everything together.

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | Toma grinned watching them pour over their plan and come up with something that would probably work if given more time and material. He wished he could give them more time, but the jig was up. They had more classes to attend and he was starting to sweat a little.
Starting with a big exhale he ramped the heat back down slowly, making sure not to let the air cool too rapidly so the engine didn't decide to become incendiary out of the blue. The kids had done well and passed their first test in his class with flying colors.
"Alright!" He playfully blew the tips of his steaming fingers and called out to the kids. "Times up!"
He walked over to the kids trying to hide a stupid grin. "How well do you think you guys did? I don't see anything sitting here that could have stopped me from turning that engine to Slag."
He gave the kids a moment to respond before cracking into a smile. "Don't worry. You passed. I said TRY to do it, which is exactly what you did. You put forward the effort with seriousness and drive that matched the situation you were in."
"That's the deal with being a Hero, kids. You can't always win. But you try, you give your best effort, and do what needs to be done to save others. Besides...." He pointed over his shoulder at the lightly glowing small block engine. "That's thing is made of aluminum alloy. It has a pretty low melting point but also a serious cracking problem. I could have easily begun to melt it but it would have probably cracked and exploded into a shower of sparks. So there was really no danger, to begin with.

Niji looked up at her sensei when he said times up and asked how they did. "Well, it seems like when didn't get done in time. Maybe we could have been faster? I am not really too sure, to be honest?" Niji put down her tools as she gave a pouty face to her sensei. He had just told them that the whole point to the test was to see if they could actually try. "Well, that was a mean trick," Niji joked before laughing. She understood the test and her teacher's words. Not every situation can be a winner. And sometimes you were bound to lose. But as a support student, looking for answers was better than not trying at all.
"So as long as we gave a shot, that's better than not trying at all?" This made Niji think a little bit. Was she looking at how to be a hero the wrong way? Was trying to hard to be everything that everyone else wanted her to be. She had this conversation before with Honey and the words from it were still fresh in her mind. "What do you think Jin?" Niji asked her classmate. She wondered what he thought of all this.
