A deep breath of the cool morning air signaled the awakening of U.A.'s very own Cross-Fit, the hyped up hero of the people. Or at least, that's what she planned to be. For now, she was just a student, a first year at that. With a graceful sweep of the legs, the blonde bounded from her bed and to the mirror, hastily scrubbing her teeth with the toothbrush like the plaque was just another villain to be conquered.
Everything was meticulously timed to give her as much time as physically possible to do as much exercise as she could before class. Some would call this an obsession... in fact probably most people would. For Katahime, every second of exercise and training could mean the difference between a life saved and a life lost; a person inspired or a person dejected; a smile or a frown. To live your life in constant service to others was something she wanted to dedicate herself to. If people wanted to call that obsession, she would happily wear that label like a badge of honour.
Finished with brushing her teeth, she jogged back to her dresser, knee-lifting in place as she hastily pulled her clothes from the already messy drawers and scrambled to pull them on. Several times she'd worn things backwards or inside out but that was easy enough to change in the bathroom between classes and hey, it put a smile on people's faces when they saw it. Green track jacket, shirt, skirt, socks, shoes and unmentionables were all present, now just for her daily exercise ritual.
You see, her roommate seemed to have this affliction caused by her Quirk. An affliction Kata didn't quite understand but she didn't need to understand it to help her fellow student with a problem! In preparation, she began doing a number of stretches and light exercises, feeling her heart begin to pump faster and her muscles begin to expand slightly. She'd need it to punch through this shell of solid rock like she did every morning. In fact, she suspected this was exactly why she had been put in this dorm room; to be given such a task was an honour to her, a call to action.
She would not let her fellow hero down!

Most quirks had their inconveniences. Some were quite simple- Being exhausting to use. Needing to eat a lot. Abnormal body temperatures needing regulation. Others, less so. Wracking the body with pain. Debilitating internal injuries. Subjecting the user to their own potent explosions. As far as this scale goes, Shouko easily found herself somewhere in the middle. See, the way her quirk functioned was quite simple- Stone built up in a shell around her overnight. Well, there was mildly more to it than that, of course, but the baseline mechanic was simple. However, consider this. With a night of accumulation, even if only a small amount built up at a time... How much stone would that be?
As evidence showed, quite a sturdy one. A rather oblong boulder lay on the bed where one might expect to find a person- A sight that may have been exotic once upon a time, but had long since become normal. Normal enough that it lay undisturbed as the other who lived in this room went about her morning business. If it wasn't known beforehand, one might even fail to realize that a living being lay inside. Of course, if Shouko were even a little bit less deep of a sleeper, she might not have ended up in a shell so thick she could not break out on her own...
Well, there's only so many words that can describe a sleeping rock, so fast forwarding- A familiar shake awoke the girl inside the rock. Or perhaps it was the sudden influx of cool air as her rocky prison gave way. In any case, the two had been together for long enough that the procedure went smoothly, chunks of rock breaking away from the fleshy core- Revealing the white skin of the dorm's other occupant. While the expansive nature of the rock was not conductive to wearing clothes... The consequence of this was a mistake rare to make more than once, and had already been figured out long ago. In truth, all that really needed to be freed were little miss sleepyhead's hands and arms- She would take the rest from there.
"'Morning, Katayacchi!" Shouko would greet her friend with a yawn and a stretch. It was an odd sight to be sure- Her lower half, nearly completely a boulder, with the upper half of a human. Like a mermaid, only instead of a fish, it was a rock. "Eto... Tatata... Umph!" Shouko grunted as she finished freeing her arms from that which bound them. She reached for the chisel on her bedside table, but found it out of reach. "Katayacchi~ Can you pass the chisel?" She would be forced to plead, her eyes wobbling at her more mobile roommate.
Well, one way or another, the tool would pass to her hands, and her work could begin- From the top, finishing carving out the stone band that served as a top, and thus freeing up enough of her mobility to sit up. A necessary thing, as it was hard enough to reach up and carve out the inside of her battle dress even bent nearly in half! The sound of scraping filled the room as the amateur girl did her best to make an artistic dress... But clearly, she had never taken lessons in stonecarving. It was better than nothing, but certainly no piece of art.
Finally freed, and technically dressed as well, all that was left with the accents- Taking too reasonably sized chunks of rock, they were crudely fashioned into donuts- Through which she expertly tied her hair into her trademarked twintails. It was a surprisingly quick process, owing to having done it many a time, and she promptly turned to give a slight bow to her roommate. "Thanks again, Katayacchi! I don't know what I'd do without you, yanno?" The girl gave a sincere thanks. It had been hard for her to admit it, but... She wasn't able to break out on her own anymore! Without a strong roommate to back her up, Shouko wouldn't be able to get out of bed in the morning! How frustrating!
But laying back in relaxation, the girl showed no signs of the tension of the morning. "Eto... Today's our day off, right? Ah! I haven't had a proper combat exercise in foreveeerrrrr" The girl asked, not waiting longer than a moment before breaking into complaint. "I know things are weird since that plane crash, but mooouuu! I can hardly take it anymore!" The plane crash referred to the plane which had fallen atop Mount Fuji... As the first year class had been there on a survival exercise. And no, it had not been planned. In short, a strange event. As to what it had to do with Shouko's lack of outlet for her battle manic tendencies... Only she knew that!

A few minutes of jogging in place and air-punches later, Kata was very much 'warmed up' and ready to perform her duty. She could feel her muscles thrumming with power, her heart thundering against her chest like a mighty Anti-Aircraft gun, her blood pumping like a cascading river. To most, this would be an unnatural sensation, to feel all the adrenaline coursing through your body. Yet, to Kata it was where she felt most alive, most in touch with her goal of being the hero of the people.
Just as her father taught her, Kata focused in on a particular point with her eyes, before delivering a series of left and right straight punches, disciplined and controlled but strong. Before long, the rock-like substance began to give way, just as Kata began to break into a sweat, only feeling her strength increase every time she struck the hard stone. Her knuckles were bruised, scraped and bleeding slightly but it wasn't enough for her to worry. They were so knotted with scar tissue at this point she was convinced they were as hard, if not harder, than the rock she was hitting. Of course that wasn't true, but such thoughts swim through the mind of someone so intensely focused on training... and someone who has watched one too many anime.
The focus was on the hands, arms and head to make sure her friend could remove the rest herself. The sections around the head broke away easy enough, the arms and hands were more difficult but doable. She was used to this by now, in fact this was training to her. It gave her a goal every morning; break the rock faster than the day before. With a loud shout, she removed the last shred of rock from the girl's arms, panting a little from the effort but smiling. Yet, just as she paused to relish in her victory, her legs shook and turned to jelly, pain shooting like lightning through her muscles. It was all she could do to sit herself down on her bed and remain in a seated position, wincing every few seconds as the pain rushed through her once again.
"Ah, morning Shouko-chan!" As she asked for the chisel, Kata hesitated for a moment with her aching muscles, though her pride berated her for showing such weakness in her duty. Limbs heavy and hurting, she pushed herself off of the bed and weakly pushed the chisel closer to Shouko, close enough she could grab it herself. She disliked this weakness of her Quirk, the idea that the moment she stopped fighting for even a short period of time she would be left more or less a cripple. It meant she had to rely on others once her time limit was up... and putting that burden on others was paramount to her letting them down. But she remembered the words of her father in the gym. All that means is that I have to fight hard enough that there's no villains left by the time I've used up my power.
Watching Shouko carve herself a dress from her stone, Kata eventually found the strength to begin doing weak stretches, working out the lactic acid build up in her muscles slowly but effectively, at least enough that it didn't hurt as much. She would still be weak for another hour or so, considering how hard she used her Quirk this morning. "I'm just doing my duty to my fellow students, Shouko-chan! Helping people is the hero way, after all!" She beamed with pride at the thought of being so helpful, being relied upon by her friend. It was a job anyone could do but not everyone would. A job that she would pursue as hard as she could for the sake of her roommate. "Same! We gotta be ready in case a villain appears now that we've got self-defense orders! Though rescue is probably important too, 'specially since that plane crash, y'know? We gotta be ready to help people as a moment's notice!" She raised her fist as a show of hyped excitement, the idea of being called upon to be a hero filling her with anticipation for that day. Though she took a moment to look at her weakened state and resolved to grow stronger... so that when she was a hero she'd always be able to help!

Shouko felt a little bit bad. She knew Katayacchi took it as training and all, but still, she looked to be in so much pain as she handed that small chisel over! Quickly, Shouko resolved herself to put it closer to the bed next time she put it down! Fun fact: She had made that exact same resolve every day! The room quickly filled with the sound of metal chipping away at rock, and the bed quickly grew covered with rock shavings. Which Shouko would have to clean up. And not just shove under the bed until her parents noticed and made her do something about it and she had to carry three weeks worth of rock shavings out to the garbage all by herself. Sigh. The pains of having to move out.
But that was to worry about after she was free, and in the meantime, Katayacchi had recovered! At least enough to start doing some stretches. How envious~ Shouko was still working to free her legs, let alone getting to do any stretches! "Nyahaha, that's exactly right, Katayacchi!" Shouko would laugh along with her roommate. Although her personal awareness of what it meant to be a hero had always been lower than her fascination with the battles heroes went through... It seemed she wasn't entirely a lost cause! It seemed her experience on the trip to Mount Fuji had been impactful on her, even if she hadn't noticed it yet.
Nyeh, well, if there are no official exercises... We'll have to make one ourselves! It's a shame you missed the battle royale, Katayacchi! Now that was a blast! Even if I got knocked out early on!" She seemed to have come to a strange conclusion, remembering the event she had arranged. With some help from Geist-sensei, of course. 23 students in an arena, fighting until only one was left standing! "Eto, but... I don't think it would be good to do the same thing again. Hmmm. Katayacchi, what do you think?" Perfect! If there were no exercises, then make one! And the more people they could get involved, the better... A bit of Shouko's true intentions slipped through with a dazed smile. After all, the more people involved... The more she could enjoy watching their cool and unique quirks and fighting styles!
As she daydreamed of a second brawl with all the first years and second years, Shouko continued to chip away at her stone prison- By now, her entire upper torso had been cleared, save for the strip of stone which maintained her decency. Finally given some range of movement, she would sit up, letting out a pleasant moan at the feeling of moving for the first time since falling asleep. For various reasons, it was fortunate that this sound was too soft to be heard next door. However, not minding that, Shouko kept at it, displaying her flexibility to it's fullest extent as she bent nearly in half, chipping away at the stone around her feet. To an onlooker, it would be rather impressive- Not only could she reach her feet without difficulty, but she could also make swift work of the stone with her chisel.
As time passed, the stone would gradually resemble more and more of it's final form- The so-called 'battle dress.'

A new training exercise? Certainly an interesting thought. Kata had never been very good at figuring out combat training beyond one on one fights and things like lifting weights or martial arts form practice but this presented a new concept for her to work out. In particular, how would one train a bunch of students that were, theoretically all at different levels of power, experience and different levels of compatibility and control with their Quirks? The easy way would be to say no Quirks allowed but... that felt discriminatory to mutation-types like her and people who couldn't stop their Quirks, like Shouko-chan.
To be honest she was sad she'd missed the Battle Royale as well, though it was mainly because she had some family business to take care of. Her grandmother had taken a turn for the worse, so to go and have fun fighting her friends and senpais felt... disrespectful, when she could have been going with mom to help her. She wished she'd at least seen it though, all those different types of Quirks, those different fighting styles all meshing together. Like all the Heroes of tomorrow gathered in one place to just enjoy themselves and show off what they could do. A mini-Sports Festival, in a sense.
Maybe Shouko-chan could tell her some things about it at least, let her know who had the coolest Quirks, who to watch next time they had some kind of showcase, who to challenge to a fight once she'd bulked up some more. "Hehe, yeah I'm sad I missed that but... you must have seen some really cool stuff, huh Shouko-chan? Gimme some highlights!~" She sat up excitedly, wincing a bit from the pain, which reminded her that she should go back to stretching. Eventually she'd gain the ability to stand again, which helped her be able to stretch and really loosen up that lactic acid build-up; the pain reduced to a small ache now.
Her thoughts returned to a new training exercise, trying to think of how exactly they could provide something new. Maybe something that simulated disasters or weather conditions? Well, that would be difficult without a specific training field to do so and right now the school only had a limited number of those. "Hmm... maybe some kinda obstacle course? Like a triathlon but Quirks are allowed and you're allowed to like... use your Quirks on others to get ahead!" So the goal wouldn't be just to fight, which would be a copy of the battle royale and would maybe give advantage to Quirkers who normally didn't do great in fights.
Now that she looked at her roommate though, it was genuinely very impressive she could make such a heavy and yet detailed dress every single morning. She remembered the first few times she'd be fascinated with just how skilled Shouko-chan was with her chisel and just how many times it felt like she'd done this before. It looked like something she could do in her sleep and to be honest if she wasn't encased in stone every night, Kata bet she probably would do it while she slept. The two of them felt like an interesting duo. Super speed and power for Kata, the ultimate, unshakable defense for Shouko-chan. Maybe they should be a Hero Tag Team or something.
What would their name be then? Kata and Shouko seemed a bit of a boring one. Maybe KataShouko? ShoukoHime? Nah. She paused as she tried to focus on this new problem she'd been given... what could their name be? Cross-Fit and Mithra just didn't have any ring to it either. Well if one was a defense and one offense that was like a fighting style right? Maybe the Right and Left Hands! The Stonefist Girls! The Rock n' Roll Express! None of the names that floated through her mind really seemed to fit. They were like an almighty spear and shield, so maybe The Spartans! No, The Sportans! Because Kata was a Sports Team member! Hmm...
Suddenly she realized she'd been staring into space for a while now, suddenly blinking and coming back to reality, grinning nervously as she realized what had just happened. "U-uh... oops, guess I kinda spaced out there. Shouko-chan... what do you think our cool Hero Tag Team name would be?"

For how long Katayacchi had been with her, she sure didn't know how to avoid obvious landmines! As soon as she was asked about the brawl highlights, Shouko's smile lit up like the sun! "Of course! Who the heckin do you think I am!" She proudly announced, finishing off her pride and embarrassment, and jumping out of bed with enough weight to shake the floor! "... Whoops, tehepero~" She knocked a hand against her head... Holding that stereotypical pose for at least half a second before bounding over to her computer. The scale of the landmine which had been triggered... To say that she hadn't even pulled on her signature tunic first, should be telling.
Within minutes, the computer had been turned on, and Shouko was digging through files so fast it wasn't clear if she was even reading their names. "Let's see... Ah, definitely this one!" She declared, opening one such video. Naturally, she had made sure to get as much of the event on film as she could! Those behind the cameras had been her friends who chose not to join in the fun, so their sense of angles wasn't as precise as Shouko's would have been. But she didn't seem to mind at all! "Timber!" She cried alongside the clear sound from the video, which showed... A girl with long red hair, leaping into the air next to an astonishingly large tree.
"Miku-senpai's really crazy! To make a tree like that, I wasn't expecting it at all! Next time I'd better put a ceiling on the arena, huh? I counted it after, it was a whole thirty meters tall, can you believe that? And Elise-senpai was super cool, knocking it down with a kick! I guess since it was grown on the arena and in such a short time, the roots weren't able to take proper root. Still, it was crazy!" This was one of the things she had learned about after the battle- Her full attention had been on her opponent! When she looked down on the field from the stands, she nearly jumped in shock at the sight. Even if she could rationalize it, it was still growing and then knocking down a thirty meter giant tree! "Really makes you realize how crazy strong our senpai are, huh? I wonder if we'll be that strong next year?"
Of course, what the girls didn't know was the story which lay behind that strength. The life or death situations their upperclassmen had been through. All they saw was the result. "And that was with them holding back, you know! To keep things fair, we had the senpai restrain themselves... For all the good that did! Here, check this one out!" A few more clicks brought up a new video, of another red-haired girl pincered between the girl from the previous video, and another girl with dragons growing from her arms. "Eh, looking at it now... Should I die my hair red?" Shouko joked, even as the action took place. The girl in the center spread her arms... And a massive electric pulse burst forth, spreading towards nearly the far corners of the map. One such bolt landed squarely on a large, furry character, barely visible in the distance. Shouko happily pointed him out. "Ah, there! That one was my opponent! Kumainu! Oh, but even with the assist from Yumi-senpai, I only managed to pull him to a tie..."
Of course, considering the shows of the senpai she had just shown, managing to tie one was already pretty impressive? However, she didn't bother showing much more of that particular show. Flicking through the videos, Shouko opened a relatively longer one. "Darren-senpai and Owen-senpai went head to head, too! Poor Owen-senpai was toyed with to death, though. Darren-senpai's just too crazy! Look at those moves!" On the screen, the delinquent-looking boy simply dodged every attack that his opponent made, sparking with blue electricity as he did so. Proof of using his quirk. As if the impossible-to-imitate movements weren't enough proof of that.
"And now! For the comic relief!" Shouko played some new videos. A student jumping almost halfway across the map... Only to land with his angle at a sickening angle that made Shouko wince. "I heard from Nimue-sensei that he broke his ankle there. He left the school soon after... I don't think it was related, though?" It was probably related. Whoops. And then another video simply showed... "And then for some reason, everyone gathered on this platform! Got suuuuper crazy!" At least half the combatants gethered on a single platform, making tracking a single fight nearly impossible. Plants grew legs and marched, only to be struck by electricity. Miku used Kaz as a human shield. Darren darted around the edges of the fight to where Yumi had somehow gotten to. In the edges of the view, a few other students could be seen, closing in. Including Shouko's personal favorite, Tetsuko-senpai! Who, unfortunately, hadn't had a lot of highlights this battle.
But this was the comedy section, so a still of Tetsuko's face was brought up, looking quite lost. "Two people started to fight Tetsuko-senpai, but... Both of them suddenly ran off, leaving her there looking like that! Pffthahaha" Shouko couldn't help but laugh at it. "It wasn't even the first time! Earlier, a Angel flew right past her, even as she was standing up all like some Shadows Die Thrice boss!" Laughing uproariously, Shouko continued to pull what highlights she had for her roommate's viewing pleasure.
Having concluded the viewing party, and finally getting dressed, Shouko would return to where they left off on the conversation. "An obstacle course, huh... Yeah! That was one of the sports festival events, too! Good idea, Katayacchi!" Shouko declared, giving her roommate a sudden hug. "Let's see, I should have some videos of the school course left ovber somewhere... For reference..." Aside from the battle tournament, Shouko had only glanced at the other events. Fortunately for her roommate, she didn't worry about it enough to actually dig out some videos.
But as Shouko was trying to remember the details of the festival, her roommate was equally lost in thought. "Eh, combination name, was it? Eto... When I teamed up with Isaakun, our combo was the Shuusaku Cannon!" Shouko remembered that move fondly. After all, she had used it to land a solid hit on Darren-senpai, who they had just watched toying around with another student! "Eh, but that doesn't sound so good for us. Hmm..." In the end, she quickly came up with an answer! "I've got it! Kata[Hime] and Mithra-[Hime], so how about Hime2 Overdrive!

The speed at which her companion bounded over to her computer should have been surprising but to be honest Kata had known Shouko-chan long enough that she knew how hyped she could get. It was encouraging to see, inspiring even. There were many ways to inspire people and Shouko-chan had her own special flavor of hype. Kata stood, using the bed to support herself for a moment, before realizing that her legs were strong enough to carry her, at least for a bit. She stepped over to where the computer was, leaning over the desk to see it as well.
Woah! Look at that thing! Miku-senpai could make something that huge? All she could do was kick people really hard, how was she supposed to fight against someone who could make trees the size of a 3-story building!? Her grin returned. What a challenge! What a challenge for the little First Year to take! Seeing all of these Heroes trying their best, how could she back down now? How could she consciously call herself a student of this place if she didn't try her damned hardest? If she doubted herself for even a second she'd fall so far behind she'd never be able to reach the #1 Student or Hero spot.
She recognized a lot of these faces and powers from the Sports Fest too, from the faces in the background. Tasukai-senpai was immediately recognizable with her blazing red hair and then that blue glow from her electricity. However, Elise-senpai was not one she remembered... she hoped she could meet her someday, at least. Frankly she hoped to meet all of these people some day, either in school or while working as Heroes in their own rights. It was hard to believe one day she'd be working alongside some of these people as comrades-in-arms. Colleagues, in a sense. Rivals, even. "Of course we'll be that strong, Shouko-chan! We can't fall behind the first generation of U.A. students right? We gotta surpass them! And the generation after us has gotta surpass us!" Kata held her fist in front of her in a determined pose, the fire of inspiration burning in her eyes.
Dye her hair red? To be like Elise-senpai or Yumi-senpai? "Naaah, you look really cool as-is, Shouko-chan! You gotta have your own style, right? Hehe~" Tributes were fine but she felt like every Hero brought something different to the party. She'd never seen two Heroes too alike, even the ones with the similar powers had differences! "Don't worry Shouo-chan, you'll get him next time! Remember his name, he could be your next big rival!" Kata watched the action unfolding before her, that fire in her eyes only growing in intensity, seeing all of these people trying their hardest to prove themselves... she was even more sad she missed it.
Her eyes narrowed suddenly as she watched Darren-senpai move around the field, those movements evoking something within her. Some kind of strange sensation where she felt drawn to watch more and more. Could she... no, no of course not. That wasn't her Quirk, there's no way she could do something like that. She was stupid for even thinking she could. Still, the way he moved... she'd seen that before at the Sports Fest but maybe she could take something from this. Sudden direction changes, attacking from such unexpected angles... Yes, yes this was a good idea. A good thing to build on!
Eesh! Look at that break! That guy really should have been more careful, surely... If you were going to jump that far, that fast you had to take precautions. It was all well and good trying to push yourself or have hype attacks but when you did something as reckless as that you were asking for trouble. ...God, she sounded like her mother. "Yeah, with an injury like that it can be hard to recover... poor dude, I hope he's alright!" The image of Miku-senpai using Kaz-kun as a human shield was pretty great, though if Miku could make trees that big she wondered why she needed to hide behind him... maybe she was just timid? Ah! Was that Tetsuko-senpai!? She leaned forward a little more, watching the screen intently.
Tetsuko-senpai had been one of the big reasons Kata had even become a Hero, alongside Kirk-senpai. Their fight at the Sports Fest got her so insanely hyped, she felt like she hadn't blinked the entire time after watching it! Their two styles were so different and you could tell they were friends. Even in the face of an overwhelmingly strong Quirk like Tetsuko's, Kirk never gave up! He fought to the bitter end! What a cool Hero he would be when he graduated! She wanted to be like him, to fight even in the face of impossible odds. Even if she failed, she would be remembered, she would inspire people to her last breath.
Yet, it seemed like Tetsuko didn't have many good moments this fight and that face she made was comical! Kata burst out laughing at her senpai looking so confused, considering she had always looked so composed and stoic. It was like it broke that hard exterior shell for just a moment, exposing another side of her, showing just how human the iron woman was. These clips were fantastic and Kata felt her heart swell with pride to be counted among the students of U.A. She only hoped she could stand out like her senpai's. She'd have to work hard... and that was an understatement. Her Quirk wasn't flashy or weird, it didn't shoot fire or make fields of ice, it didn't even give her huge muscles like her favorite Hero Red Horn. But she wouldn't let it deter her; Kirk-senpai had shown her that, if indirectly.
Kata stepped through to the kitchen to grab some water after that, hoping it would cool her muscles some while she continued to stretch, until the burning was mitigated to the point where it was only a background ache. When Shouko-chan finally got dressed and spoke to her about the course idea, Kata thought for a moment. "We could even maybe suggest it to our sensei's! Could be a fun lesson for the classes!" Though with the weather set to turn worse over the coming month, maybe they should wait a bit... She'd be fine running in the snow but she figured her classmates might not appreciate such conditions.
Hime2 Overdrive, huh? That was definitely an interesting name! Unique, as well. Admittedly a lot of the names she came up with her head had been a little... well, a lot borrowed from other sources. "Yeah! That sounds really cool! I think we'd be a great tag team, Shouko-chan. You with your ultimate defense and me with my hyper speed! Like a hammer and anvil, y'know? All the villains would fear our names! Hehe~" She let out a small chuckle, extending her fist for a fist bump. She hadn't heard of many permanent teams or anything between Heroes in Japan, they were all individuals. Hey, maybe the two of us could be the world's first Hero Team? That'd be neat, right? I don't really know why the Heroes don't team up as much, y'know? There'd be some really crazy combos coming out of a Red Horn and Wagyu team, right?"

Haaah, Katayacchi was right! What was she saying? "Nyah, that's exactly right, Katayacchi! Though, we definitely won't let it be easy for them!" The brunette declared, a fire rekindled in her eyes to match that of her roommate. "But you know, the gap between the second years is quite interesting. There's those like Darren-senpai who I could hardly touch, and then there's ones like Kumainu who I can fight to a draw!" Her eyes gleamed as she considered the fights against both of them. As well as the others she had met... Hmm. "Eto... Some of it is definitely the quirk, and how they use it. I mean, compared to Darren's insane movements or Yumi's firepower, Kumainu-san is just big and strong, you know?" Really big and really strong, mind you. Her ribs still ached from that punch... It might technically be a tie, but in terms of result, she was the clear loser! She had just gotten a good hit back in!
Of course, that wasn't the reason she didn't put any emphasis on her own fight when pulling out videos. She just didn't think what she had done was anything worth mentioning! But to be fair, she didn't need to watch herself, because she experienced her own moves daily! Such boring moves, how could they be worth showing off to someone else? Or so her thoughts went. In here mind, even the fight between Krahno and Chikako was more interesting than her own! Speaking of which... Nah, that didn't have any highlights worth pulling up.
"Nyahaha, thanks, Katayacchi! You're the best!" Shouko would respond to the praise in the natural fashion- By throwing her arms around the other girl and rubbing her cheek all over. A movement which would probably be more comfortable if the former was not currently dressed in solid rock, having not yet covered it with her much softer outfit... But such were the risks of rooming with Shouko. If her lack of self awareness and inconsideration for personal space had not been learned by her roommate by now, Katayacchi would have to be even more oblivious than Shouko! Keeping up her assault, she would even answer- "Mmhmm! If I want to catch up to the first string senpai, catching up to Kumainu-san is a must! But there's some strong guys in our own year too, you know? Koutoto wasn't in the fight, but I've fought him and he's really strong for a support studies student! Though he tends to overthink things, ehe." Shouko chortled at the memory. Really, she should have lost that fight, if he didn't go out of his way to waste so much energy... But then, experience was strength too! Next time they fought, would be a new story altogether!
That said... "And if I don't catch up, all the better! Everyone's so cool, how can they be staying in the same place?" Her grin was super wide as she said so- As expected of the girl who loved battle! In fact, if it was so easy to catch up, she'd be really disappointed, you know? After all, she was a girl who loved superpowered battles! Even if she wasn't in the fight! Especially when she wasn't in the fight! Between watching someone weaker than her, and someone stronger than her, it was only obvious who was more interesting! Or someone who was starting slow but growing fast, compared to someone who had already peaked and plateau'd?
Well, she'd worry about that the next time! Nodding swiftly, the girl found herself quite happy. Wasn't this school the absolute best? She couldn't wait to meet everyone else, and see what they were capable of! Both those who were already stronger than her, and the ones who would be stronger than her in the future! She wanted to watch them all! Shining eyes gleamed a gleam that should be familiar to her roommate by now. Well, that is to say, they shined excitedly far more often than they didn't! "Nyaah, I'm sure it's fiiiine. I mean, Kumainu got a few of my ribs, and I'm fine now, see!" Proudly displaying her bare belly, her words seemed... Optimistic. Especially with her wounds from the recent first year excursion still visible... Would they scar? But Shouko didn't seem to mind at all, as long as they weren't in her way! And by her excited stretching to prove her physical fitness, row of intimidating scabs was not bothering her in the slightest.
Ahem, with that finished, and returning to the original conversation. "Yeah! Let's see, Geist-sensei was a huge help with arranging the brawl... But he and Jaeger-sensei go way overboard, you know! The course has gotta be about who gets to the end first, not about who manages to survive until the end!" Shouko mused aloud, thinking about the qualities of their teachers. "Shockwave-sensei can move earth, which would be a huge help! But he's kinda strict, so he'd be hard to convince... Heeee... Which teacher would you ask, Katayacchi?" Shouko would probably go with Geist or Jaeger after all... But she was curious where Katayacchi's thoughts lay!
At the description of her name as cool, Shouko's nose turned to the sky as she snorted with pride. Of course it was! This was a certified Mithra-hime name, after all! From the studio who brought you such great hits as the Shoukopter Special! Hmph hmph! "Heh! That sounds like fun! But who would be the hammer and who would be the anvil?" Shouko asked innocently, latching onto the most irrelevant part of the entire thing. Naturally, she wouldn't leave her roomate's fist hanging in the air, striking it with a loud thud! "Nyahaha, wouldn't that be fun? I'm down!" Her ulterior motive played on the screen in the background, where Shouko's screensaver played highlights of various matches.
"Heeeh, that would be super cool! Super scray, too! Imagine being charged at by those two... One villain pancake, coming right up! Eh, but maybe Serperior-sensei would pair better with Red Horn? I mean, she's already strong enough on her own, so having someone to hold a target down... Bam! Knockout!" Similarly, her own strongest single target attacks were so slow... If she hard a partner that could hold down slippery targets, they wouldn't stand a chance! "But you know who would make a terrible team? Blacktooth and Hellhound! Gunpowder and flames, they'd blow each other up before they even met their target! Along with the whole building they're in! Oh my!"

Which teacher to go with... hmm... Honestly Kata hadn't paid a huge amount of attention to her teachers thus far, too busy lost in her own little world, wondering about little things like attack names, fights, special moves, recounting all the manga and anime she'd seen and trying to take ideas from those. She really should start paying attention in class, huh? Even since she'd been moved from Class 1-C to Class 1-B she'd not really gotten a handle on their homeroom teacher. Maybe she should start treating them as rivals too; after all, they were just as strong if not stronger than the Second Years, right?
She stopped for a moment, thinking... thinking, thinking thinking. "Hmmm... I mean, there's probably a bunch of ways we could do it, y'know? With Geist-sensei, he'd probably make it a super dangerous obstacle course; it'd be more of a course for mobility and movement than speed. But if we went for Shockwave-sensei he could make it more about timing, thinking and planning, right? For straight up speed it would just be a straight away course with not many obstacles and that doesn't feel as fun!" Not that she was particularly smart anyway, so it's not like Kata would fare any better in Shockwave-sensei's course as compared to Geist-sensei's. But that would at least let her know where she'd need to improve.
Wait... how could she know where to improve if she only did one of them. Aha! "Oooh, what about if we get everyone's help! It's like a three-stage course thingie where each teacher makes a part of the course, that way it really tests your skills! Like a triathlon! Biking, running and swimming!" Shockwave-sensei, with his earth-moving skills, would be perfect at creating the actual structure of the course, Geist-sensei would be perfect for traps and obstacles and maneuvering and... well, honestly she didn't know much about Jaeger-sensei but if what Shouko-chan was saying was accurate, he'd create something cool too!
God, she was getting hyped up just thinking about it! How could they get in contact with the teachers anyway? Was there some kind of petition form? An email or something they could send? Was it just a matter of going up to them after class or something? Or maybe they had to go see Principal Kobayakawa! She took a deep breath, eyes blazing again as she ran through what the course would be like in her mind. All that dodging and ducking and weaving... by the time it was approved and set up, would she be stronger? Faster? Would she have gotten rid of this damned weakness of hers? She couldn't wait to see her own strength.
Hammer and anvil generally meant one was slow but strong, while the other was faster and could push enemies towards the strong one, right? Though now that she thought about it, she was only assuming that Shouko-chan's strength lay in her ability to take hits. Rocks could be used as weapons too, she'd seen drawings of cavemen using them on the ends of spears and stuff to hunt giant hairy elephants! "Wouldn't you be the anvil, Shouko-chan? My fighting style is all about being fast and hitting people from where they don't expect, you're more about strong single strikes, right?" Now that she thought about it, she hadn't seen Shouko-chan in many of her fights, besides the one she'd just shown on the video.
She was glad she took the fist bump though! Kata was very fortunate to have a friend like Shouko-chan, someone she could talk to, someone smart, at least in her own way. Someone who could see things very objectively and tell her where she was going wrong. It was that bluntness that made her a very special type of friend; like she was unafraid of saying what she felt. The more she improved the more she felt like she'd need to rely on Shouko-chan to help her understand where she was straying, so it was good that they had such a strong understanding of each other already.
Blinking, Kata thought about it for a moment, her face suddenly going rather intense as she imagined that scenario. Red Horn and Serperior would definitely make a much more effective team but then there was the personality class; Red Horn was more of a laid back, smiley Hero while Serperior seemed much more concerned with his appearance and status on TV. It was hard to see the two of them working together in any capacity that didn't involve an argument. Something about that thought made her wince... It hurt her seeing Heroes so obsessed with glory instead of honour and courage. It's why she liked Red Horn so much, she didn't care about that stuff, only saving people.
"Yeah but if they coordinated their attacks that could be mega powerful, right? Like... if they stayed away from each other but used a bunch of their strongest attacks at range, it'd be like bombs! Like the ones the old pirates used in their cannons! I suppose then we'd have to call their combo Blackbeard or something, hehe! Or maybe 'The Armada!'" If there was one lesson she'd paid attention in it was History, at least in the non-boring parts! Pirates weren't boring, they were cool, like lawless anti-Heroes intent on sticking it to the oppressive, corrupt, stuck-up nobility!
Oh! They should probably have breakfast right? Especially considering Kata hadn't gone out to do her run yet. She suddenly spun around and jogged towards the little kitchen, pulling some things out of the fridge. "Whatcha want for breakfast, Shouko-chan? We got eggs, bacon and... uh... more eggs! I think these are still in-date... hmm..."

Shouko nodded along, her roommates thoughts were... Pretty much exactly the same as her own! As expected, great minds think alike! "Mhmm! Heehee, what if it was... Both! Would it become the ultimate obstacle course with the powers of both teachers combined, or would Shockwave-sensei's insistence on keeping things non-lethal cause too much conflict with Geist-sensei!?" The part where she seemed to casually acknowledge as fact that Geist's obstacle course would be hazardous to human health was... A concerning indicator of that teacher's tendencies. "Nyeeh, it could be really good! Or really terrible as they both sabotage each other! But is it bad that I want to see that too?" Shouko's eyes gleamed at the idea of the chaotic battlefield that would come about from the two teachers' difference of opinions. Would her roommate share the interest, or try to talk her out of it?
The answer, as it turned out, was neither! "Eh, a triathlon? Wao, nice idea Katayacchi!" That's right, that way they wouldn't get in each other's way! And as funny as a complete mess of a course would be... A challenging one with three teachers behind it would really push people to their limits! Especially Geist-sensei and Jaeger-sensei, those two who didn't know the meaning of holding back! And being pushed to their limits, meant that they would give it all they had! To the Shouko whose interest in the abilities of others outweighed even her sense of self preservation, was there any sweeter lure? "Nyahaha, I wonder how far I could get in that~" She mused, not even considering the option of making it to the end! After all, it was those teachers making the course!
However, as usual, her interest fell on others rather than herself! Instead of seriously comparing herself to what she expected Geist and Jaeger to add, she started thinking of how her fellow students would handle it! "Funyaaah... Yumi-senpai seems like she'd do well at an obstacle course! She's crazy fast, can fly super well, and the ones she can't, she can blast right through! Darren-senpai too! They'd be my top picks!" Shouko theorycrafted. Hmm, who else would do well... Who had participated in the obstacle course before? The girl tapped her temple as she tried to recall... "Eto, eto... Maybe Kirk-senpai could be a dark horse? He might not be as fast, but with his muscle, he'd be even harder to hold down by obstacles! And he's surprisingly agile, you know!"
Who else, who else... Jisa-senpai was pretty speedy? But aside that... "Heeh, there aren't a lot of speedsters among the senpai, are there? How surprising! And among our year, it would be... Karen-chan would win a race for sure! But her attack power could use some work, so would she really be able to break through obstacles? And avoiding them would take some time... Ah! Mianon would be able to cheat by swimming under the course! Unless the sensei were prepared for that, huh? Nyaaah, who else... You'd be a contender! Speed and power! Eto... Eh?" Was that... Really everyone she could think of? Of course, there also those like Hanamin who were just unsuitable for racing, but still! With two full classes, how could she not think of even one more!?
As someone who had previously set up a similar event, it was really easy to do, too! You just had to say that you were doing it! And it would be done! Or so felt the Shouko who had somehow forgotten all the paperwork and recruitments she had gone through for her own festival of chaos... So worth it! "Nyeh, are we actually doing this? You can't back out at this point, right? Right? Do you wanna talk to the teachers or get the competitors together? Yeah?" Shouko would latch on and not let go. That's right, with Katayacchi's help, she could do twice the work with half the effort! Forget 23, they could have the entire school go through this obstacle course of hellish madness! "Hmmm, ne, Katayacchi. Isn't it a shame to make such a cool thing only to use it once? What if we made it a permanent fixture! Students could challenge themselves against it to see how far they got! Or they could race their friends! Or compete for the best times! Wouldn't that be cool?" Shouko added a suggestion that perhaps was going a bit too far... In the first place, how much work would be needed to reset the course each time? But the girl's eyes shined with the pride only someone who thinks their idea is good can!
At the other's clear misunderstanding, Shouko's eyes turned wide- Had she never explained her fighting style to her roommate!? Thinking back... She hadn't! She'd naturally shown off everything she could about everyone she had footage of! But why would she ever stop to talk about herself? "Eh... Hehehe..." She chuckled glumly at the realization. No wonder Katayacchi had described her as being defensive! That wasn't the case at all! "Actually, single heavy attacks... Are my least effective! They're only good for finishers on people who are too tired to dodge, or as a cross counter with another big move! When it comes to big hits, I'd rather control my momentum to chain one into the next... It's not as powerful as dropping a rock on them from above, but is much harder to find gaps in! Or else I can sacrifice power for speed... Honestly, my clubs look way cooler than they are useful! My best work is done with my bare hands!"
It was true. In terms of the effectiveness of her four self-styled stances... The worst stance was by far the heaviest! Followed by the second heaviest! Whereas her two light stances were roughly the same, and way ahead! Should she abandon the latter two and focus on her hand to hand, perhaps? But you know, having the option was always good! Heaviness had served her well as a finishing blow in the past! She just needed to get better at knowing where to use it, that was all! Hmph!
Speaking of things more or less effective... "Ehh, that could work! Kaboom!" See, two heads was better than one! "Heeh, or you could just call them Short Fuse! Then who do you think would be the worst combo, Katayacchi?" If Katahime didn't think it was those two, who would she think it was? "Ehh? Breakfast? Nyaha, sounds like that's the answer, Katayacchi! Bacon and eggs it is! PROTEIN!" The last word was inexplicably in English. It seemed Shouko didn't have any particular attachment to a more traditional japanese meal.

Too much of a conflict? Mmm... she supposed that was definitely possible. She liked to believe that even if the Pro Heroes in the Hero System didn't always get along, at least the teachers at U.A. did, if only in pursuit of a common goal, right? The education of young Quirkers had to come way before any personal conflicts, though this was technically both. Honestly she was a little torn herself. Putting them in mortal danger would at least prepare them for what was to come but at the same time they were only in first year, maybe it was a little soon to be putting them up against actual guns.
Either way, she was all on board. No one could ever say Katahime Taisou wasn't motivated!
"I'm sure you could make it super far, Shouko-chan! Nothing could be able to get through your stone protection! Hehe~ I might not get super far at first but I'd just keep trying until I won! I'm fast but I'm nowhere close to Darren-senpai or Yumi-senpai or even Kirk-senpai... But I will be one day! I just gotta keep going, right?" Her signature grin returned, unfazed by her own comments about herself. After all, it was a warrior's duty to never get wrapped up in pride, right? Knowing one's limits was as important a strength as knowing how to use one's skills. She'd get there as soon as she could, she just knew she wasn't there yet.
The fact that Shouko-chan even thought she was a contender was nice of her to say though, especially considering the competition she'd just mentioned. To even be placed in the same line-up with her peers to her was flattering, since she really hadn't done anything to stand out all year. She had to get on that, though. Maybe this could be her motivation, to push forward and be strong and show the world that she wasn't to be ignored anymore... to live her dream of helping and inspiring anyone and everyone she could. Kata resolved that the next time something like the Brawl appeared, or this triathlon they were planning, she'd take part in it, no matter how hopeless the chance of her winning. She'd do her best... and show everyone that she was here!
"Yasashi-san could probably take a bunch of hits from all the obstacles and keep going! I've never seen his Quirk but he looks like the kinda guy that can take a beating, y'know? Seen a bunch of 'em at my Dad's gym! There's alsooo... Yuuto-san? That cool shark thing he can summon would be able to protect him, plus he might be able to ride on it or something! Oooo, that'd be cool, right Shouko-chan!? Being able to ride on a giant flying shark!" Her eyes lit up with joy and fire as she thought about everyone's unique qualities and abilities; though admittedly she seemed to be focusing on what would look cool rather than what would be practical. No one ever said Katahime Taisou was particularly smart or observant.
She thought for a moment, realizing that setting up such an event would be a lot of work but if anything that made Kata even more motivated to go through with it. It felt like a duty; so she could let her peers shine in an event other than fighting! "Yeah! We gotta do it now, no quitting! As my Dad's motto says: 'Don't be a pussy!'... Though I don't 100% know what that means, he just told me it means you can't give up, hehe!" Permanent? Hmm... that could be really cool! People could test themselves on it every day and see how far they get until they reached the end, right? Like a marathon practice! "Making it permanent would be awesome! We could have like a weekly get-together where we all try to get to the end! And if we need to like... fix it up afterwards, that'd be fine too, right? We'd learn responsibility and resourcefulness and stuff, Shockwave-sensei would like that!"
As Shouko described her fighting style, it made Kata pause for a moment, eggs and bacon balanced precariously in-hand as she gently tip-toed to the counter to avoid dropping it all. A single egg fell, splatting against the floor, but the rest of her stock made it to the safety of the counter. She'd need to try harder next time. "Hehe, I guess we'd both be the hammer then, huh? That's fine, two hammers is still super cool! You'll need to let me see you fight sometime, Shouko-chan, or at least we should get a spar in!" Kata turned the heat on and dropped a few pieces of bacon into the pan with some oil she had to really stretch to reach out of the upper cabinet.
Kata herself hadn't really nailed down a style yet but that was sort of the beauty of the way her father had taught her. Throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. If everything sticks, use it all! It's why as much as her Dad was a super expert on boxing and wrestling, she had never been too great at it, on account of her small, short arms. Didn't mean she couldn't use it, of course, she'd done so in the past. But she wasn't going to base her entire style around it. Instead, she'd found that taekwondo and muay thai were more along her lines, yet even then she was more freeform than those styles usually wanted. Sticking to a rigid stance felt... unnatural, to her. Maybe she was just hyperactive in the brain or something.
Worst combo... hmm... "What abooout... Hellhound and Yellow Jacket? I've played enough Mokemon to know that bugs don't like fire very much, y'know? All the smoke from Hellhound's fire might make her super upset too!" Even then, she hoped they'd at least get along in a situation where they had to work together. Their powers might be a little incompatible but that simply meant one would fight while the other evacuated civilians. Honestly, that felt like Yellow Jacket-sensei anyway, she didn't feel like a particularly violent person. Either way, she had breakfast to make!
It took her only a few minutes to cook the giant plate of bacon and fried eggs, all piled high into one big serving. Kata wasn't very good at cooking to be honest but she had done enough with Mom to know how to somewhat cook eggs and bacon, even if the cooking of the eggs could only be generously described as 'uneven'. She brought the big plate back through, setting it on a little table in the corner of the room with two chairs, encouraging Shouko-chan to take however much she wanted. "Breakfast is served!"

Shouko merely shook her head. "My armor isn't that amazing, Katayacchi! You know that, you're the one who breaks it every morning!" Shouko pointed out. Katayacchi could break the rock with her bare hands, what could the crazy contraptions unleashed by their teachers do to it? "Besides, just breaking through head on is boring! The fun of an obstacle course comes from how you avoid what they throw at you! When you take care of it all with brute strength, that means they have to actually repair the course!" Well, some obstacles were best solved with brute force. But if you solved all of them that way, you may as well just destroy a bunch of punching bags! "Especially after the budget cuts, they aren't made of money, you know!" The school budget cuts made a great excuse for teachers to turn down her various ideas of varying feasibility and safety. Much to her frustration!
"Hehe, exactly right, Katayacchi!" However, that aside. She was with Katayacchi all the way! "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again! The only way to fail the course is to give up on it altogether! Hmm hmm!" Shouko hummed happily. "I'll keep trying! You'll keep trying too! We'll both keep trying!" She added. "But before I can compare to the top of the second years... I've gotta get to the top of the first year! Karirin, Koutoto, I'm coming for you!" She referred to two students she had come away from encounters with, failing to claim the upper hand. In the former case, she had lost to the other's speed and mobility... And the part where they were fighting two against three! But she rarely brought that part up. Fair was fair! As for Koutoto, their fight had ended in a tie, both of them pulling their final punches. How had he grown since then? Were his basic techniques more concrete? She couldn't help but want a rematch!
Ah, but they were talking about the obstacle course, and not sparring! EHehe. Both of them would crush her in this with their speed! And that was A-OK!
"Ehh, Takkichi? Hmm. Well, his armor is definitely more functional than mine, but he doesn't really have the speed going for him? Just like me, there's a limit to how much he can take! Though he's pretty flexible and has more ability to repair it, I still wouldn't put much money on him." She reasoned. In the end, speed and mobility were the kings of obstacle courses! In the end, it was still a race... Surviving to the end was one thing, but the champion was the one who got there first! As for Yuujin... "Nyeeh, agreed! I forgot about Yuujin! That shark is pretty fast too, you know. I wouldn't count him out at all!" Of course, knowing Yuuto, he would probably try to break through the obstacles head on instead of avoiding them, so maybe not... Ehehe.
Four eyes lit with expectations as they discussed the different powers available to people. "Oh, speaking of people I forgot, there's Red-senpai too! He'd do really well!" She hadn't seen much of him except in film of the brawl, but he was still an impressive sight! Flying around, midair jumps, a ton of the speed and mobility she prized! And while his defenses were lacking, he could pack a good punch!
But all good things must come to an end. "MMhmm, Katayacchi! Though I don't get what's wrong with being a cat! They look cute, but they're the undisputed kings of hunting! You can learn a lot about how to move by watching a cat you know, how they distribute their weight, taking falls, and such! Entire martial styles came about from doing just that!" Much like her roommate, Shouko lacked the necessary understanding of the phrase. Which was probably a good thing. "I'm all for it! We'll get this thing done if it takes us until next year!" She declared enthusiastically. And... "Katayacchi, that's brilliant! If we clean up the course after, there's no way they'll have any complaints! Oh Katayacchi, I can't wait!" She wanted to get out on this course already! "Forget weekly, I'll be challenging it daily! I won't give up until my time is lower than the day before! Yeah!" Of course, she didn't consider that... That meant she would have to clean it up daily, as well. Multiple times, if she didn't meet her goal! Perhaps that would dampen her enthusiasm when she considered it.
"Haha, two hammers it is!" Shouko concurred with the final decision. "We'll knock them out of the park! And sure! I'd love to see your style too, Katayacchi! Everyone here has such different ideas on how to fight, it's really opened my eyes!" Fingers pulled eyelids wide to emphasize her words. "Like Kirk-senpai's adaptation of sports, or Tetsuko-senpai's fusion of her quirk with her family's traditional techniques! They're all so amazing, I can't wait until I've seen them all in action! There's still so many senpai I haven't had a chance to watch yet, and that's the pro heroes aside!" And the vigilantes. And the villains. But those were a more controversial subject, after all.
She sighed at the amount of work cut out for her. But her heart beat lightly at the fact that there was still so much more in the world to see! "Ahh, Katayacchi. The world of superpowered battles is really limitless, isn't it?" She breathed airily. There was so much to do and see, how could she not daydream a little? Sometimes she even forgot that ever since the start of this year, she too could be considered a part of that world!
As Katayacchi finished cooking breakfast for the two of them, she gave her thoughts. "Ehh, Hellhound and Hachi-sensei...? I can see it! That would be awful, nice thinking, Katayacchi! Bees don't like smoke, so I'm sure Hachi-sensei isn't a fan... And unlike Blacktooth, there isn't even room for cool combo potential!" Shouko agreed. Indeed, the ultimate bad combo wasn't coming from the potential of disaster, but from the lack of synergistic opportunities! "I wonder what kind of combination plays we could pull, Katayacchi!" Shouko mused out loud. They both had really strong physical bodies, so what could they do with them? "We should practice sometime! One versus one is all fine and good, but ever since that fight against Darren-senpai, I really understand that my experience in coordination play is missing out!" They had lost quite handily after all!
But that was enough chatter! Breakfast was served! Happily taking her chair- The one which was modified to hold her weight- Shouko piled food from the plate onto her own. She left enough for Katayacchi to have her fair share though! As much as Shouko ate, she wasn't someone who would be ungrateful towards the person who cooked for her! "Nyeeh, looks delicious, Katayacchi! Itadakimasu!" Shouko would grant the bare minimum of politeness, before food began vanishing from her plate at an alarming rate... She was sure her quirk didn't involve needing to eat more than the usual person, right!?

The mention of Red-senpai caught her attention. There was a guy Kata hadn't seen or heard much about in a while and she'd not exactly seen much of his work over the last half a year she'd been at U.A. Even the footage of the Brawl that Shouko-chan had shown her didn't have much. Was he just a presence that tended to blend into the background? She'd heard of people like that, who just get passed over because they have no real ability to exert themselves in any social situation but she'd also heard he was strong. Very strong. Maybe she should try and meet him someday, she might be able to help him stand out more!
Her roommates motivation to challenge the course every single day got Kata's fire going as well, downing a large piece of bacon and clutching her fork in her fist, looking into Shouko-chan's eyes with that intense stare. "Well I'll take on that challenge too, Shouko-chan! And I won't stop until I've beaten your score every day! I can't lose to you Shouko-chan, I gotta be the #1 Hero someday!" She'd let out a little chuckle, also not realizing that she'd have to clean it up multiple times a day as well and considering her Quirk she'd probably only get one go before she burned out. But that was logical thinking and Kata wasn't exactly known for that!
She really wanted to see Shouko fight, if she was honest. See how her roommate and in many ways closest friend thus far at U.A. moved and struck her opponents, since it was so different than the way she'd initially thought. Her father had always told her there were more styles of fighting than there are stars in the sky, because each one was unique to the person who developed it. All she had to do was make an attack that could counter each one, keep her movements and style flexible, light and agile. That's why she'd named her fighting style 'More Kicks Than There Are Stars In The Sky!' though now that she thought about it... that was a bit of a mouthful.
Speaking of mouthfuls, Kata stuffed more bacon and eggs into her facehole, eager to get as much protein in her as possible for today's exercise. She still had to her her morning run and her afternoon run and probably also head to the store later to grab more eggs and bacon and things that weren't just eggs and bacon. Maybe she'd run into someone along the way, those were always fun adventures, especially when she got to do her afternoon run to the shop and back.
Kata smiled at her roommate's enthusiasm for battles, wondering if she should invite her to her Dad's gym to watch some of the bigger mutants tussle in the ring. She remembered a large man with a rhino Quirk and a lady with a giraffe Quirk fighting one time when she was small and being inspired watching her father yelling and giving them encouragement. "Hehe, yeah! I mean, we probably shouldn't encourage Heroes to fight each other or like... they might get upset and actually hurt each other but it's definitely cool to think about!" She couldn't believe she had just been so rational, but it was the truth. Inspiring people was much more important than being strong and proving your superiority over other Heroes, right?
"Hellhound's a really cool Hero though! Even if she doesn't combo well with someone like Hachi-sensei! Maybe she'd be a good Hero to intern for in second year! Though... interning for Red Horn would be better, but... I'm sure she's super selective about who she picks!" The thought of practicing with Shouko was a good one. Being better at combo moves was going to be useful, to get the most out of the limited time she could use her Quirk, especially if she wasn't particularly good at rescue operations on account of her Crash period. "We should practice some time, yeah! Maybe we could like... have a move where you throw a piece of stone to me and I kick it like a football at the target! I'm sure the teachers could come up with some cool targets and ideas for us to try out moves on!"
She thought for a minute, imagining the fight in their head against some faceless assailant. From what Shouko-chan had told her about her fighting style... "If we both attack at once, with a flurry of strikes, there's no way they dodge or block them all!" Of course, being somewhat of an otaku at times, Kata had come up with names for each of her strong moves, so combining their attacks was sure to result in something pretty damn hype! "Oh! What if I do like... a sweep kick to the back of their legs and you do a super clothesline or something and we like... send them spinning away! Hehe!"
Kata finished her plate of bacon and eggs, pushing it away and patting her stuffed belly with a satisfied smile. "Tell ya what! Let's book the training fields for like a month from now. Until then, we gotta work on our special moves so we can show each other! And then we'll come up with some really epic combos!" A first step, for sure. Considering she had just focused on general training and running before now, this seemed like the first time she'd really decided to focus on something interesting.

Written as rivals, but read as friends! That was the relationship between Shouko and Katayacchi! Or perhaps it was written as friends but read as rivals. In any case, their rivalry was such that it pushed the two to greater heights, rather than dragging each other down! It was a legendary relationship, the likes of which could only be found in the pages of Shounen Dash! Naturally, Shouko wouldn't make it easy for her roommate to surpass her... But rather than who won each day, what mattered was the effort they put in! With a wide grin, the girl's hand would raise for a firm handshake. Let the best Hero win!
If Katahime wanted to see Shouko fighting, then the opposite was doubly so! After all, forget becoming a Hero... Shouko had come to UA to watch other people fighting! Whether it was the refined swordsmanship of Tetsuko, or the patchwork sports-derived moves Kirk... The powerful electricity of Yumi, or the impossible movements of Darren. All of them were such amazing styles, and while they were the efforts of a year of training... Even the budding moves of the first years were fascinating to her! Kazzun's constructs. Yuujin's combo play. Mianon's Ambush Predator... Seriously, they needed to rename that to something cool. Boogle Translate, I choose you! Ahem. In any case, Shouko really looked forward to seeing and learning from Katayacchi too!
As the two stuffed themselves, the conversation continued. "Nyahaha, there's no harm in thinking about it! It's not like they're so small-minded as to actually care what a couple of kids thinks about them, right? Besides, as heroes, even if we don't ask them to, there'll be plenty of battles to catch!" Why should heroes fight each other when there was a whole city full of villains to face? The hard part was getting there before the fight ended... Or, failing that, finding the best of the best shaky cell phone footage! Wouldn't it be nice if she could get security camera footage? Ah, but that wasn't publicly available!
But she definitely gave an enthusiastic nod at the last bit- Whatever else it was, it was cool to think about! To consider the advantages and disadvantages of each, what they can do... To wonder who would win in a fight! "But no matter how much you think... The coolest thing about battle, is how things change in practice! Someone can have all the theoretical advantages and still lose! A person could lose fifteen times, but come back and win on the sixteenth! Some people say that it's luck, but it's more than that!" The girl lost herself in the charms of battle. The uncertainties and the certainties. The luck and the determinism. That sort of feeling. Alas, it was a feeling that she had yet to meet a kindred spirit in the understanding of.
"Ehh, internships? I hadn't thought about those at all! Eto... Eh, there aren't any heroes currently focused on martial arts, are there? That's kinda disappointing! I guess Serperior-sensei uses Aikido, but... If it's to that level, even I can do it, you know?" Shouko pouted. In the end, the heroes mostly relied on the powers of their quirks! If it was like that... "It feels like... It's kinda depressing, ya know? Like saying that all my effort is for naught, since even if you haven't polished your style, it's fine as long as your quirk is strong, yanno?" It was doubly so depressing to Shouko, because of the nature of her quirk. It wasn't one she could train. It was something that grew in spite of her training, at whatever rate it chose to do. And while that made her stronger- The rock was harder than it had been when it first developed- it did mean her strength was limited in a way she could never do anything about. Martial arts was the only path to become stronger. That and waiting.
'Honestly... I'd rather intern under Darren-senpai, you know? His martial arts are the best I've seen, you know! Or even Tetsuko-senpai, she's someone who never let her technique suffer for the power of her quirk! But of the current heroes..." She could only pause. Not Red Horn. That kind of brute strength... Was very effective, but there wasn't so much she could learn from it. "Hachi-sensei and Serperior-sensei, I suppose?" Serperior had the aforementioned Aikido, and Hachi-sensei's moves were a fusion of her quirk and french Savate. While it was still budding, much as her own style, there was a lot to learn about the combination of moves and quirks! No to mention the things to learn by experiencing Savate and Aikido! Among everything else they could teach her, of course. "Eto... I haven't seen much of Wildheart or Strike Hopper, so they could be interesting to see in action!" If she didn't know what she would learn from them, she would at least learn about them! Or so the smug grin on Shouko's face would say.
Potential combo moves was a topic reequiring much less thinking! "Yeah, yeah! Or we could cut the middleman and just have you kick me at them! Fastball Special style!" Of course, that would be significantly harder than just hitting a chunk of rock. Of which Shouko left more than plenty, her quirk's defense hardly standing up to the average firepower it faced. "Mmhmm! Or we can grab them in an armlock from each side! How would they escape that? Ooh, ooh, imagine this! You knock them into the air with an uppercut, and I come spinning in to knock them away! Wham!" She mimed the action of throwing a baseball into the air, and batting it. "And of course, the best of the best is when we're fighting back to back against a horde of mobs, and we hook each other's arms and swing around in a big circle to smack all of them at once!" Okay, that one was clearly taken from whatever manga she was reading lately.
With a smile that spoke volumes about her anticipation for this- "Ehhh, a whole month?" She complained. Why couldn't they do it tomorrow! But thinking about it... "Nyehehe, special moves? Got some secret training planned for the month so you can surprise me, Katayacchi? As expected of my roommate! Naturally, I won't disappoint you! A month it is! Let's do it!" Besides, a month should be enough time to clear up the remaining traumas from her wounds! Pumping her fist in excitement, Shouko shoveled the rest of her plate into her cavernous mouth. "Nyahaha, I'm all fired up now, Katayacchi!"

She wanted to believe what Shouko said about them not caring what a couple of kids thought but a part of her worried that, considering the powerful personalities of certain Heroes, there might come a time when they might disagree, or Kami-san forbid, get into a fight over something silly. A part of her looked at Serperior-sensei and his... very powerful personality and wondered if he perhaps would end up causing some conflict. She hated thinking like that, especially about a teacher but she couldn't help it. She just had this bad feeling that soon things were going to end up going wrong, y'know? Like a cat fight between two female Heroes on TV, or heroes spreading rumors about each other... She endeavored to be better than that!
After all, how were you supposed to inspire people if they couldn't trust you at your word? Kata was a truth-teller through and through. If someone deserved respect, she'd give them it. If they didn't, she'd tell them that but try to do so in a way that helped them improve, or at least allowed them to work together still in the future. Maybe that was too naive of an outlook, or at least too optimistic. She wanted a world where Heroes weren't competitive, where they could work together for the good of the wider populace, not for profit or themselves. Though she wasn't... really sure how to do that exactly. Still, she took that handshake with a firm nod, grinning ear to ear as she reveled in this feeling of competitive spirit.
"Hmm... not martial arts but... I mean, I dunno if the internships are supposed to just be about learning from the Heroes, I guess? I feel like that's the teacher's jobs, right? It's about learning the practical side of being a Hero and getting experience. Hellhound gets more experience than anyone! Besides Red Horn, I suppose!" She didn't consider the fact that by the time they graduated, the Second Years would have already been pros for at least a year! Woah! That was crazy to think about! Maybe she could work with Kirk-senpai or Tetsuko-senpai then! Kirk especially, he seemed like the kinda guy who would totally understand her sporty nature!
But to her, the peak of the mountain was Red Horn. If she could get there, if she could intern for her... she'd know she was well on the path to her goal. If she could just see how the #1 Hero operated, how she carried herself, how she moved and inspired people, up close and personal. If even just once. Just once being able to see that; she knew she'd be able to do it! There had to be something she'd been missing all year! "But Shouko-chan, your Quirk is a part of you too, right? Just like an arm, a leg, a hand! You gotta train it just like you gotta train your muscles! People aren't just born with the ability to use their Quirks well, y'know? Take me for example, I still haven't gotten the hang of using my Quirk yet, like how people have to learn how to use a sword or how to restrain people if you're in the police." She stopped for a moment, really stretching her brain for a good way to explain it but coming up with nothing. Kata wasn't very good at this whole battle philosophy thing yet, she supposed.
All of her move suggestions were very interesting at least! Shouko was clearly a very creative soul, much more so than Kata. As much as she liked to take ideas from manga and American comics and some old pro wrestling tapes, she also wasn't very good at stringing those together properly; that would require forethought, a skill Kata hadn't quite learned or honed yet. "Those are all really cool, Shouko-chan! Though I'm not sure about an uppercut... I have kinda short arms, it'd need to be, like, an upward kick or something! Like in Road Fighter! Juggle them in the air or something!" That gave her a small idea for a move of her own... she'd have to do some research. She could have sworn she'd seen an anime where someone was hit on the chin so hard it knocked them clean out! Hmmm... but where...
Frankly she was glad to see Shouko so pumped for this little training exercise in a month's time. Honestly her main reason for delaying it was so that she could figure a few things out; after all until now she felt like she'd just been kinda coasting along, hoping that by working out that inspiration would strike her. Maybe it was time to try kicking it into gear. But what would be the first step? "Hehe, yeah! I gotta make sure I'm at my best for you, Shouko-chan! After all, if you're gonna be my tag team partner, you're only as strong as your weakest link, so I gotta be as strong as you or better!"
With that, she checked her watch, scratching the back of her head before standing quickly, stretching herself one last time. Considering the time, she knew she could get one good run in before it was lunch time, and she had to work off some of the fat in all that bacon, right? "Right! It's time I get to doing my usual morning run! I'll see ya later, Shouko-chan, if I'm gonna show you what I'm all about in a month's time, I gotta make sure I'm at my peak!" Waving happily, she dashed towards the door, swinging it open and bounding through out towards the stairs.
She wasn't going to disappoint Shouko-chan. Not now.
