Alex countered his concerns about the readiness of students to be heroes, with the revelation of Darkshine's age. "Seriously? I knew she was young, but... To think that she's barely out of school, doesn't that only make her even more impressive? I mean, she's not like us, who've been training for it... That's, wow." It was amazing to think of. But, did that mean that Darkshine was impressive, that the students were behind... Or perhaps, was it both? "Well, I suppose a lot can change in a few years. Who knows, maybe by the time we graduate, things will have changed?"
But it didn't stop there. Haruto had unleashed a beast that could not be contained, and through it all, he was listening intently. Haruto was the perfect audience for a fanboy, because he clearly was listening to what was being said- And not just smiling and nodding. "Yeah, I see what you mean. Pressure, huh? I... I've never really thought of how I would react under pressure. Like, the closest I've come was at Circus Kunshu, but, even then... I don't know, I just did what I had to do. Which may have saved lives, I don't know, but... I guess I'm just rambling, sorry, carry on." Just from what Alex was saying, Darkshine was seriously impressive. In the same situation, what could Haruto have done...? Well, then again, he wasn't even a hero. He was just, a doctor... Like Elise's poor parents...
Okay, well, that was an awfully depressing thought. "Yeah, I think I see what you mean... But, you know, since it can't be taught... We'll have to focus on the things that can be. Find ways to overcome that- I know our class is smart enough to do that. And besides, we have a huge advantage over the current pros." Haruto beamed. ""Unlike them, we won't have to work alone!" If there was one advantage of Yuuei's low standards for applicants, it was that it attracted a large number of students. If they couldn't save the day by going in alone- Well, they wouldn't have to! And, if even a small number of them held the potential to be as skilled as Darkshine...
"Sure! Though, to be honest... I'm in the medical section of the class, so the gear makers... I haven't exactly interacted with them as much. I think most of them joined the school robotics club, whereas... Well, I've kept myself busy with the cooking club. I know it's not heroic, but, it ended up being surprisingly popular! Stop by sometime if you need a snack, and I'll whip up something for you. And if you ever fall sick- Well, to be honest, this black goo is only a small piece of my actual quirk. Which is, as you guessed, the ability to filter toxins- Which includes diseases. I'm still not sure why it draws them in, but it does, so- I'm your one-stop-shop for disinfection!"
Haruto ended up explaining what his quirk actually was- It was better to keep everyone informed, after all. Besides, ever since he had started practicing with controlling impurities, it really felt like, well, like he could cure diseases with barely a trouble at all. Even the air pollution that had bothered him all his life, seemed to have cleared up. It was amazing, just the effect that understanding how his quirk worked had had. "I'm definitely down for some cross-class training! I'll talk to Tsutsuji-sensei about it later, see what she thinks!"

”Yeah, it’s nuts how talented some people can be. Some people are just born with a knack for that sort of stuff, but that sort of total package of a hero is so rare it’s way better to try and mold a whole bunch of heroes who are a lot rougher around the edges and get a bunch of them. Most of us, maybe none of us will hit that level… but there are a lot of us so even if it takes, let’s say three of us to match one Darkshine in the end, we have what – twenty five students in three hero courses? That’s a lot of backup when we’re all actually ready to fight.”
On the subject of pressure, the delinquent shrugged his shoulders. ”That’s the point. Nobody knows how they react until it happens. Being aware of the issue isn’t enough to shut off your sense of self-preservation. If we’re lucky, none of us will have to find out until we’re already graduated and have all the training to at least know what we should be doing when shit hits the fan.”
At the mention of not having to work alone, a wide grin spread across the American’s face. ”Yup, absolutely. We’re the first hero school in the world, and the first ones who can actually train with a huge group of other quirkers in an environment that encourages it. Our first fights won’t be against villains like the first pros, and we’ll have a lot more practice once we do get our licenses.” he added, the excitement clear in his voice. ”We also have another advantage that the original pros didn’t get, an actual support group that can do things other than just beat people up. The, uh, intersection between people who make great fighters and the people who make talented doctors like you want to be or inventors or anything like that is super small. If I wasn’t doing this, I’d be a janitor somewhere.” he conceded easily, laughing at himself a bit at the end there.
When the white haired boy, Haruto, admitted that his hobby was cooking and that it wasn’t very heroic the delinquent just shook his head. ”Not everything needs to be heroic.” the delinquent said with amusement clear in his voice. ”We’re still teenagers, hey? And going insane by only doing school work and physical training doesn’t help anybody. Cooking needs a lot of attention to detail and measuring and skill, too. Makes sense that someone who wanted to be a doctor would take up a hobby that made them practice skills like that.”
When the subject turned to the Support Studies student explaining how his quirk worked, the brunette bobbed his head in response. ”That’s super cool, actually. So you like never get the flu or anything, right? I’ll keep that in mind the next time someone in my class gets it! We’re getting close to that season, y’know.” he responded politely. ”Plus, being able to cure a bunch of illnesses with a wave of your hand is a hell of a skill for doctor, too.” he added, a bit more excitement edging into his voice as he considered the possibility. ”Heck, if you can already cure a bunch of illnesses with your quirk, why go to medical school and learn how to do it the hard way?”
The delinquent’s head bobbed again, this time in visible excitement and anticipation when Haruto mentioned bringing the subject up to his teacher. ”Hell yeah. I’m gonna bring my proposal to the principal after this whole event is over hopefully. I was hoping to use Ground Alpha for a lot of stuff, and if the school could help by funding it that would make things so much easier. I’m getting decently good at working with wood, and I’m pretty sure I can make some makeshift buildings and stuff if I actually got the raw materials. I already sent in a request to the principal for a meeting about it, so hopefully it gets accepted.” he rambled on excitedly, the anticipation bubbling up through his voice like a torrent. He was extremely excited at the prospect of getting to build something, and moreover build something that could actually do the school a lot of good.
He had not wanted to be elected as a class representative simply to bask in the title and gain some arbitrary importance, no. He wanted the title so he could wave it in front of school staff to give credibility to the ideas that he presented and actually have the appearance of having an entire class behind him as he did. It gave him that extra credibility by having that title next to his name to be taken seriously by people like the Principal, and that smidgen of extra credibility was something that he could ride all the way to the bank. If you gave someone with the ambition and drive of Alexander an inch, they would take a mile.
He might be doing it for the wrong reasons. He might only be doing this and pitching this idea and working this hard because he wanted to stick it to Rin. He wanted to prove that he was better than her and deserving of the top ranking, but to do that he needed some signature achievements to put to his name. Good lucks and charm got him a lot of places, but number one wasn’t going to be one of those places. He needed concrete accomplishments to put him ahead of Rin, and the bee line that he saw to that goal was twofold. First, he would have to prove that he was a better leader than her. He needed to show that he was a better Class Rep than her and helped his class and the school more than she did. Second, he would have to beat her in single combat once he had established his superiority as a leader and as a representative. If he managed one of those things, he had a legitimate shot at moving up in the rankings and making a splash. If he did both, though, the number one position would be all but assured. It would only be a matter of time, and Alex was in no great rush. He wanted to savor the victory when it came, because oh God would it be an earned one.

"I know exactly what you mean by that... But hey, just because we weren't born with talent like them, doesn't mean we can't try hard enough to catch up!" When it came to innate talent, the obvious person who came to mind was Elise Von Eisenberg. Someone who, merely weeks before, had never touched a gun- And now, even veteran soldiers were talking about how she put some professional sharpshooters to shame. And on top of that, was her skill in medical sciences, which outstripped anyone else he'd met, except some of the doctors here at the military camp- Although, having not met many professional doctors, that only counted for so much. Haruto, on the other hand? What did he have going for him?
Not much, that's what. Which was exactly why he hadn't given up just yet- So what if others were twice as talented? That didn't mean he was twice as bad at things as they were! It just meant he had to work even harder than them, and keep his eyes on his goals! No matter what, he would become a doctor, and he would save lives. And that was all that he hoped for.
"Yeah, and you have us down in Support Studies to back you up! What we lack in quality, we'll make up for in quantity... And if some of that quantity also have quality, why, all the better!" The two students seemed to see eye to eye on this point, at least. As for the subject of pressure- "I'd hope so, but... Between the events at Circus Kunshu, and that QED epidemic... Not to mention that shark-man a student had to fight... I have a bad feeling the world won't be so kind as to wait for our graduation before forcing us places we don't belong. But, I... That's why I want so badly to be able to help. So that if I can't fight, I, can at least patch up the injured after they win!"
Then they moved back to the subject of before, of advantages the current students had over the pros. "Yeah, Yuuei is an absolutely amazing facility, too. You'd think the world's first hero school would be, this small place with no funding because the whole thing is so new, but, they really went all out! It's really geared towards the hero courses instead of the support one, but... Well, that's not unexpected, and we still get quite a bit!" Obviously, the relatively small support course was never a major focus for the school. "Oh, don't be so negative! I'm sure you'd find something else to do!" Ever the optimist, Haruto didn't think for a second that Alex would have to be a janitor. How could someone like this lack opportunities? Even if he couldn't quite put a finger on what "like this" actually meant.
As to whether Alexander's logic was right- Well, Haruto didn't think his cooking had that much to do with wanting to be a doctor, but- Was that really a point worth arguing? No, it wasn't. So he dropped it and left the invitation open, and let the conversation follow its natural flow to the subject of the Support Studies course. "Yeah, I've never had to worry about catching a cold. Or any other disease, for that matter." The other grew relatively excited about the prospects of Haruto's power. He wasn't wrong, but- "True, but, curing disease is only a part of being a doctor. Prevention is worth a thousand cures and all. Besides, I, well- I want to be able to do more than just that. Like, besides diseases... It's not like my quirk can stitch a wound back together, but, it can perfectly disinfect it to avoid complications. So, if I myself knew how to stitch, I could easily do that on the spot without worrying about sanitation, if I had to. Besides, no matter what I end up doing, I'll still need my medical license, and that means going to school."
Although, well- As he had often felt before, having to go through this lengthy process, meant that it would be many years before he was able to fulfill his dream. But, there were no shortcuts in this game called life!
"Oh, really? Well, if you already have a meeting scheduled, that'll make things much easier. Thanks! Yeah, the more of it we can set up on our own, the less we'll need to impose on the staff to help us with... I'm sure that some of our techies at S.S. would be happy to help as well!" Though, thinking of what he had seen of Yojin and his roommate on the UA chat server... Okay, maybe things would be safer if he didn't get involved in the construction. Less chance of, say, accidental amputation. "There's a lot more hero course students than there are support course, but... Well, once we know who's interested, we can work out those ugly details!"
Haruto had no way of knowing how this would turn out- But, like always, he was hopeful.

”So basically you don’t want to rely on your quirk doing everything for you, right?” he asked after Haruto had finished the topic of medical licensing. ”Cause it sounds like you could be a miracle worker with just your quirk, but you don’t seem satisfied with doing that. Like you want to do more than just that.” there was no judgment in his voice, just pointing out what he thought was the actual intent behind all of the mathafors that the Support Studies student presented. He wanted to do more and feel like he could succeed without relying entirely on his quirk itself. Miku had a similar point mindset earlier, which is why he made the connection. She didn’t want to use her quirk and only rely on it because she thought it would limit her, and for a hero her point was well taken. He thought that she was wrong, of course, and that quirks should be seen as a skill like anything else even if you didn’t necessarily choose it and could be relied upon entirely to make a very capable Pro… but he understood the logic behind Miku’s point.
Haruto’s, though? He really couldn’t. The guy could make a living through just his quirk. He wanted to be a doctor, but he could do that without the licensing and shit and be much more effective than actual doctors in a lot of their own fields. Regular doctors didn’t cure anything and everything, right? There were knee people who only focused on knees, ear people who only focused on ears in their offices and stuff. Why couldn’t the Support Studies student just focus on diseases and stuff his quirk could cure, like those doctors focused on knees and ears? It made no sense to him logically. It wasn’t really his place to judge, though. It wasn’t his place to question, because he had just met the guy. He wasn’t going to confront someone harshly over what was basically just a guess based off of a couple of sentences, because that was not only rude but also a great way to alienate what seemed to be a great guy. That wasn’t his goal here, and in fact his goal was the opposite. How many people in Japan could wave his hands around and cure someone of a deadly illness without any medical equipment? Not many, and Alex knew his immune system wouldn’t stay strong forever.
”Yeah,” the delinquent responded when the topic changed back to the club. ”We have people with a bunch of cool skills that might not help beat up villains, but can make some really cool stuff. We have like a robotics club and stuff too, and we’re just the first class. In a few months when we have even more students come in, it’ll be fun to see all the cool stuff they end up making.” he said, beaming with excitement for a moment. ”If we build enough stuff, all the students who come after us can hit the ground running even sooner than we did.”
If anything, really, the first years were the unlucky ones because none of the student-run organizations was built yet and they had to do all the legwork to set up a routine and work out all the kinks in such a system that would just kind of naturally happen at the start of any big project. The students in year two, for example, would have a much easier go around than the first years in that regard and it would continue to get easier for year three when two years of student work had built up something that was hopefully pretty robust and great by then.
”If I can just lay the groundwork and get it set up and the school to support it, we’re golden. The sets and scenarios won’t be the best to start off with, but people will improve it as time goes along and more skilled people get interested. Just need the initial person to do all the boring parts and take the getting yelled at when things don’t work – and I’m happy to do that part.” he admittedly, rubbing the back of his neck with his hand for a moment as he realized how awful the ‘founder’ role sounded when said aloud like that. ”It’ll be feel good to finally build something, y’know? Like actually feel like you’re accomplishing something.”
At this point, the delinquent paused for a second and switched tacts. ”Hey, Haruto, just so I can contact you when I nail down the date and everything,” he started, fishing around with his hand for the smartphone in his pocket and pulling it out to open the contacts tab and held it out to the white haired boy for him to take and put in his phone number and fill out the contact form, essentially. ”I figure it’s easier to do this rather than try to find you again in the general chat or something.”

Haruto nodded at the other's assessment of his motives. "Something like that. After all, it's not like my quirk is infallible- I can only absorb so much, can only last so long with it in my system. Especially since, well- Until recently, I was making little headway into it. I didn't understand it, couldn't control it. Once I'd topped myself up, well... Anyways, I wanted, well- To be useful, even when my quirk wasn't." It made less sense, now that he had found a way to push his quirk's limits... It was true that, just curing disease and toxins, he wouldn't need more than his quirk... But, well... "Besides, regardless of all that- I'll need my license if I want to practice medicine legally, and that means going to school."
Licenses existed for a reason, and just because he could, didn't mean he should. Especially with anti-quirk sentiment still prominent, it was wise to do everything by the books. As for the rest... Well, he had plenty of time to figure all that stuff out, wouldn't he?
"Hah, it's crazy how fast this year has gone. To think that we'll be upperclassmen soon... I wonder what kind of kouhai we'll end up with. Well, for us, it may be more of an if... There's so few of us in the S.S. course, less since Elise transferred, and- Well, most of the people who were interested already joined, so, I wouldn't be surprised if next year's class is even smaller..." It was entirely normal for the support class to be tiny. After all, who would make being a sidekick their life's goal? Most of the people who entered this hero school, did it with the goal of becoming heroes! Still, it did make homeroom that little bit lonely.
"I know exactly what you mean. I felt it when I made the cooking club, though... Well, it's probably not as big of a deal as this will be, but, it felt satisfying. To learn that we were the first to suggest it, to go around recruiting... Every time a new member shows up, it's one of the most satisfying things I've ever felt... Even if I don't feel like I've done a great job as president... But everyone seems to be enjoying it, so, how can I not feel happy about it?" The cooking club was a truly odd mix of characters. Some had joined for a love of cooking, and others for the sake of making friends. And yet, everyone seemed to have gotten what they were looking for. It was gratifying to see. Not for the first time, he was grateful that Chise had given him the idea.
As the other boy pulled out his phone, Haruto was swift on the uptake and brought out his own. "Of course! Here." And through the power of bluetooth, the two boys would swiftly and painlessly exchange contact information. "Sure, though, I may have to direct you to my class president to work out the details- But, I'm sure we'll be able to figure it out."

When Haruto confirmed the delinquent’s earlier suspicions about wanting to be useful without his quirk and not just entirely relying on it, Alex nodded his head along. The point about wanting to go to school in order to do everything above board and legally was also interesting, because there were quite a few people whose desire to help people or to make money would override their desire to stay within the boundaries of the law. ”Makes sense.” was instead what he started with, choosing to not challenge his point of view. ”I imagine it would be hard to learn how to do some of the more difficult stuff like field surgery and stuff without going to some sort of medical school, as well. Gotta play the game to get the skills you need, and if you’re already in the school anyway why not stay the whole time and get the license?” he asked rhetorically, mostly just walking himself through the logic for his own benefit… just out loud because he didn’t have much of a filter. Sometimes word vomit just happened or he began speaking his thoughts aloud without realizing it.
At the point about the next year being smaller, the delinquent was quick to disagree. ”I don’t think so. We were the first hero school, but we’re not the only one anymore. The schools are going to need some way to market, to uh, make themselves seem different from each other and make the students go to that place instead of any others. If there’s any, uh, what do you call it when something is held for like everyone to see? Public showing? Exhibition. Exhibition was it. If there’s any exhibition matches like between the schools, it almost doesn’t matter what it’s in.” he started, confidence filling his voice as he did. It was a foregone conclusion to him that there was no way any other school could come close to beating the top end of talent that they had at U.A. It simply wasn’t a thing that was within the realm of possibility.
”Whether it’s rescue, combat, or something different we’ve had more practice than any other school. We also have a lot of heavy hitters. It’s why the military had Rin fight that giant shark guy, because to them she was the strongest quirker out of all of us. She’s the bar, and for anyone else to prove themselves better than U.A. they’d have to show that their top students can do better than Rin. That’s not something that’s going to happen, but we just need to make a situation where that’s obvious before the start of the new school year so people to U.A. instead of those other places.”
It wasn’t exactly a secret that he despised Rin Kurama, the number one student. He despised her and everything that she stood for, the blustering condescension and the lording over of her rank and shoving it down everyone else’s throat. He hated the false humility and the façade of harmless girl that she played in front of teachers and other authority figures and it made him absolutely sick to his stomach to see in action. It was always ‘hey look at me, I’m Rin and I’m perfect and better than you in every way’ and ‘let me show you how morally and physically superior I am than you’. It was fucking awful and insulting, but regardless of that fact Rin was extremely skilled and he meant every single word of praise he had for her ability. He was going to be the one to knock her down from that gilded throne at number one, and he’d be damned if some no name tomato can came in and stole the glory of beating her before Alex got the opportunity himself. It was unfathomable, because he had to be the one to do it on a suitably grand stage in front of a roaring crowd. There was simply no other way for this to go after the things that she had said and done.
When the conversation turned to the Cooking Club, though, the delinquent had visibly relaxed and his muscles were noticeably less tense than when he made his earlier comments about Rin. ”Hey, Haruto. Big or small, that’s all you. Whatever the Cooking Club ends up doing, however big it ends up getting, and whatever shit y’all get into… you made it happen by putting in the legwork to turn it from an idea to an actual thing. You made something, and you have every right to be proud of it even if other people helped you along the way.” he spoke with a tone much gentler than his norm. He didn’t know what it was about this school and its students refusing to be proud about their accomplishments, but it seemed to be more common than he thought. Maybe it was just Japanese teenagers in general rather than a U.A. thing, but he couldn’t help but continue to think it was extremely weird. He couldn’t imagine how hard it must be to be happy when even your greatest achievements go along unacknowledged even by yourself. It didn’t make sense to him, quite frankly, but he wasn’t going to pry into that can of worms right now because it wasn’t his business.
The exchange of phone numbers was done quickly and easily due to the wonders of modern technology. ”Yeah, no problem.” he stated in response to the white haired boy mentioning likely having to get his Class President involved. That made sense, because Haruto seemed to be a guy who liked to follow proper procedure and all the laws and rules and regulations that entailed. ”This won’t get started until after the military camp is done and over with anyway, mostly because I feel like I can get a lot of good training done in here.”
With that, the delinquent extended his hand for another handshake. ”Speaking of which, I should probably get back to it if I want to catch up to Rin. It was nice meeting you, Haruto. We’ll talk again soon to talk about the littler details once I get more information from the Principal about what I need to do to make this happen.”
