| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ Right, a lot of things needed to change in her mind and the idea of the burning Lady did not work with her. Rowan was sure that she would fit in eventually, or well that's what she had to tell herself. There was a high chance she might get crazy if she did not. The girl had borrowed an old-fashioned book from the library, it was old because it used paper instead of the electric versions of it but she had never been a fan of the e-reader. It felt as if she was not holding a book at all.
Right now she should definitely interact more, with people in the building as in where she lived now or the people in her class, however she found it; not the easiest thing to do. And if she got nervous, she might blow up a book or anything else that she would have in hands, perhaps another reason why electronics was not a good idea. Not that she would ever want to blow up a book or anything else but.. right there she went again. Her mind would get into a paranoid state that she did not want to have.
So instead she just lifted up her chin as if she belonged and was not worried about anything else, like she used to do before she got to this school. She probably wasn't dressed well for a hero academy but she did not care, a girl needed to look good too. So her black high heels, her grey pencil skirt, and white blouse made her look like a student even when classes were over. All she needed was to get this book to the library and to head back to her own apartment without any issues. So much for making acquaintances. As she handed in the book, she realized she would want to bring another one home and headed towards the shelves that had interesting books that Rowan would like to read. However even with 6 inch high heels and not being the shortest; Rowan couldn't reach the book she liked. She jumped up a few times before looking around to find a way to get the book. Libraries! You suspected them to have something like a stool she could climb up to but those were at the front and definitely not where she was. Perhaps time to ask someone? |

There were three places Nick could usually be found: his dorm room, the local bookshop and the library. Currently it was the library’s turn to house his supposed magnificence. Not that he felt all that magnificent on the inside, as much as he did his best to maintain a confident posture on the outside. No, on the inside he was just tired.
Where is my life even going? he thought to himself as he walked into the building. A good question with nary an answer in sight. Thoughts of Amadeus, Thunder, Susamu, his mother and Rin all whirled around his mind in a tornado of pain, none of them coherent. God, he desperately needed a good book to escape into, even if only for a few hours.
While he was a fairly tall individual, the bookshelves in the school library stretched all the way up to the ceiling, so he made sure to grab a stool to assist him in his quest. Nick had not even known so many paper books still existed, but he was more than grateful. There was something so comfortably appealing about paper books e-readers simply did not provide. The smell of real paper and the sensation of turning a page just could not be replicated electronically.
Nick entered an aisle, stool tucked under one arm. He spotted only one other student there; a girl he was unsure if he recognised or not. Was she not one of the newer additions to his class? He shrugged; he did not know her and it did not concern him much.
He placed the stool down close to her, but did not yet climb on it. Instead he stood and scanned the books in search of something he had not already read.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ Jumping up and down was more like tiptoeing and jumping at the same time. You did not want to land on the heels. She did not care how it looked but she already figured out by the second jump that it was a useless attempt. Why did they not have ladders and stools in front of every bookcase because it reached the ceiling. No normal person could reach that, however that was the case, she wasn't surounded by normal people. She wondered who would use their quirks to get the books and if there were more people more motivated to get their hands on the classics instead of on the ebooks. All Rowan wanted was to read the classics from centuries ago, lose herself in the stupidity of romance and women that were not allowed to do anything.
She was a rich girl, or well her dad had enough money and that made her spoiled and she wondered if she was born in the ages of which Jane Austen wrote about, if she would be so dumb as well. Instead she liked reading and studying and well perhaps not always with the greatest mindset but who cared. How would a small, now 174 centimeters cuz of heels, girl ever reach the shelves with the A from Austen, with simply jumping was beyond her. Unless frog powers or something or other ideas of high jumping. She pouted and crossed her arms in front of her chest until she heard someone, perhaps the librarian came to save her!
She vaguely recognized the guy that came around the corner of this bookcase, still taller than her even with her heels, she was sure he still wouldn't be able to reach the book for her, yet he was carrying something like a stool. Great! This guy did come to save her, no no Rowan! She told herself, she should not see people as only workers for her, that had changed the minute she got out of the house. Right, so she should play this politely, no idea what his name was, but she was almost sure he was in her class, she had tried to remember the faces after she joined only days ago. "Ehm, Hi, I'm Rowan, I believe we are in the same class." And well, he did look good enough to talk to, again Rowan needed to sorted out her feelings and thank god she kept her mouth shut.
"Do you mind if I borrow that for a second, I was just on my way to pick one up." She pointed at the stool before pointing at the Jane Austen book way up high, "Trying to reach Emma, the book I mean." So much for her high class education, she was damn stuttering and looking like an idiot. |

Nick hummed an unspecific tune quietly to himself as he scanned the rows of books. Really, in a way he felt as though the books here were the only friends he had made at Yuuei. They did not confuse him, or reject and infuriate him the way the other students did…
Almost as though summoned by his thoughts, a voice cut through the silence of the library that had to belong to another student.
“Hm?”
He turned his head to see it was the girl he had spotted as he entered this aisle. “Ah, yes, hello.” Best to remain civil. She had yet to give him a reason not to be, though deep down he braced himself for that to happen. “I’m Nick.”
She proceeded to ask him for the stool he had taken and indicated the book she wanted to use it to reach. He could not help raising his eyebrows.
“And here I thought I was the only person who read anything from before the 20th century,” he said, genuinely surprised. “Austen’s not really my genre but I’ll be honest, I never expected to find a fan of hers here of all places.” He pushed the stool towards her with his foot. “Go on, then.” It was not as though he had chosen his book yet, so she might as well use it.

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She did not want to show that she was totally surprised that well a handsome looking person could be at this school. Most had strange quirks, she expected that at least and that such a thing would be shown. Strange assumption as her quirk had not left its marks on her. She only noticed when she was younger that if she used it too much that her hands would turn quite warm and she rather avoided that for obvious reasons. The good thing was that she had not lost her tongue and yet playing the dumb card again. She did not understand very well why she came off like an idiot or at least to herself. She could form proper sentences and that surely made it easier. She was sure she had seen him in her class and thus she decided to jump on that wagon and simply say her name and what she thought. It was perhaps not always easy to be the exchange student but as her mother had convinced her that she wanted to do good, she ended up here. If it was up to herself, she would rather hide her face for safety. If the Burning Lady got a decision, her other self as she liked to call it, she would rather walk out of this and simply throw everything out of her way. The books were good, even the other version of herself appreciated those.
Books were a relieve, able to bring her to other realms without having to focus on this hero world that she wanted to live in. The thing was that she was not sure if she was able to and if it worked all like that. It only sounded like that; I want to use my quirk for good, which was easy to say when you blew things up with a touch of your hand. She got mostly over that stage of fear though and well she was okay with pushing the burning features away in the back of her mind.
Back to the here and now, her save heaven in the library and a miracle that brought a stool towards her and a classmate but the stool was easier. But again she wanted to make acquaintances or friends or both and that's why she talked to him, also very curious about who he was. Now all she had was his name; Nick. She smiled at him, meaningful because it was not bad to have a short conversation. She felt she had spoken in an idiotic way and was surprised as Nick looked surprised at her and she felt a blush creep up on her cheeks, "To be completely honest, I thought I was the only person that would read the books instead of all that electronic shit." She couldn't help but insult the electric devices. But she was glad to hear that he was amused by it, for some reason.
She moved the stool a bit closer to where she had to be and tiptoed even on the high heels to be able to reach the book with just her fingertips, being careful enough, it would take a few seconds before she managed to get it a little forward from the shelf and to take it off. As soon as she stood with both heels back on the floor, she couldn't help but wonder, now that they were the rare beings that liked normal books and before 20th-century books, after all, he was here too, what he did like to read. "So if you don't mind me bothering you again. Do you have any recommendations?" |

Her smile came unexpected to Nick, whose thoughts were momentarily derailed. Was it genuine? His mind scrambled to try and figure that out, not used to seeing people smile at him and mean it ever. Unable to do so, he caught sight of her blush and his head went utterly blank.
“Uh, yes,” he fumbled to respond even to something he agreed with. “Ebooks are such a waste, you know, there’s uh, nothing quite like a paper book…”
The image of Rin flashed into his head and something inside him clenched. He immediately looked away from her.
His mind focused again when she asked about his own recommendations. Asking Nick about his favourite books was akin to asking a hiker about all the mountains he had climbed. Despite all the negativity and darkness building within him, his eyes lit up like a bonfire.
“Oh, so many!” he cried, and he was not exaggerating. “If the 19th century is your thing, they have a lot of Dickens here, and I remember seeing the Bronte sisters which might be closer to your tastes. Though for contemporary works, there’s some K Harvard over here who writes a lot of fantasy romance, and if you like sci-fi then Wada Shinji is a good choice…”
He proceeded to ramble off into a great big highly detailed explanation of virtually every book and author featured in the library. He knew them all, perhaps a bit too well, and it showed. He could not have stopped himself even if he wanted to, not that he did. Books were his element.
“So, that’s everything,” he said as he at last reached the end of his ridiculous tirade. He was not lying. “Personally I like fantasy the most out of all the genres here, so that’s usually what I read.”

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She nodded, nothing quite like paper books, exactly! A man who understood. She looked at the bookcase, there were still a lot of books and she wondered if in the future all these would be gone and replaced because let's be fair; books made of paper could break and so could electric devices but they were easily repaired with the brains from now. She liked the way the old books were written, the stories and how they would go on or the crazy stories that they tried to pull off that she could not even fantom.
She could not imagine the time where women were... well were treated differently. However, if she remembered correctly unless she saw it through the eyes of a child, her father treated her mother as only a beautiful doll. She did not have to work, she took care of Rowan and that could be quite a difficult job from time to time. Rowan dared to admit it, to herself at least. She had never seen her mother really work and they also had servants. Some human, some robots but still, she stared at the book that she was now firmly holding in her hands and wondered with this conclusion if she could still like reading a book like Emma. She brushed some black lose hair strains out of her face and turned to Nick again. Pushing the stool with her foot back towards him. He looked lost in thoughts, when she glanced at him, which she dedicated to him trying to figure out what book to read, as there were many.
She decided to ask, after all, what harm could there be in asking. She was curious and they were in the library. Even in the library she found it a rare sight to meet someone that picked the normal books as well or she meant the paper books, they were the normal type for her. She liked his reaction as she asked him. It was like opening a confetti container, he seemed to be so excited and happy about the idea of books that made her smile brightly herself. She looked at the bookshelf as he said names to her, she knew the Bronte sisters but preferred Austen. Perhaps she should try something new instead of reading Emma for the twenty-first time or was it the twenty-second? But her mind quickly jumped back to listen to Nick. Pressing the book she was now holding against her own body as she tried to not be distracted, to be fair, it was funny to listen to him. So once he was done, which took a while, she could not help but giggle slightly. Which was very short and abruptly stopped; Rowan never giggled. Or well, not since she left home and she had only giggled in front of her mother as she found giggling dumb. She had to save herself to ask something or say something, "It is like you read the whole library." She had read a lot but she was sure that Nick would win in the total amount of different books and even if she counted her thousand rereadings. "I always felt like sci-fi wasn't my thing because well compared to, the world Austen lived in, we are a total sci-fi world. Could there be more in the future?" Perhaps a world where quirks would be more accepted. "I might try a fantasy romance." She looked at the shelves again. She wasn't limited to taking one book only after all. |

Somehow, Nick’s incredibly detailed and wild explanation had not terrified Rowan away. Not that he had expected it to. Why would it? That she giggled was a bit unexpected, however. Once again he thought of Rin and quickly averted his gaze for a moment.
“I have!” he said at her remark about him having read the whole library, completely unironically, though he still struggled to look at her straight. He had even read the books that were not really his thing, like the aforementioned Emma. “I’m still waiting for them to get new content in. Ooh, speaking of, are you aware of the shopping district near here? There’s a lovely little bookshop there that sells real paper books and it’s simply delightful. I go there as often as I can.” Again, he was not exaggerating.
Finally, how wonderful it was to meet someone in that godforsaken school who understood the majesty of reading. It almost lifted his spirits high enough for him to forget why they had been so low in the first place. Almost.
“I suppose you have a point,” he mused in response to what she said about their world being a sci-fi world. “A lot of the novels here were written before Quirks were a thing, though, so they’re more what the people of the 20th century thought the future was going to be. None of them expected we would ever start to develop superpowers, it seems.” A shadow seemed to fall over his face as it became a scowl. “I would say don’t read GS Laurent’s books in a hurry if you find them at the bookshop, mind you. They don’t have his book The Fifth Anomaly here, but in that one he makes out that Quirks were a genetic accident that died out by the end of this century.” He scoffed. “What a fool.”

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ Rowan just wondered what books she would pick now and her eyes just scanned the books without seeing the titles, because that was difficult for her at this point but she would look for it as soon as she was ready to know which book she would pick. She was rather impressed that he had read all of this, she was sure that she would need a lot of time for that as she was focussing too much on studying and also other things but now she felt like a challenge to just read more books from this library. Oh, she wondered indeed when the library would get more books and she wondered if than they would replace books and that meant that she would have to hurry up.
She turned her eyes from the book back to Nick and she gave him a small smile. "I did not know, but it's great to know, I only moved here a few days ago." Because she would be able to go to U.A. But she felt really happy to learn that there was a bookstore in town that did sell paper books, "That's fantastic." She could not help but say, she remembered how her father had gone around their home to find books for her as she had thrown away the e-book devices everytime he tried. "I am definitely going to find that one." She was excited to know she lived close to such a store. But right now it was cheaper for her to borrow the books from the library, however, if she owned the book, she could take as long as she wanted.
She thought about Nick his explanation on the sci-fi and if you considered it like that; "It might be funny to read it and see what they thought the world would be like." She said with a thought wrinkle on her forehead. She had no idea but it sounded good, she turned back at the books and nodded, "Oh alright," she took a pen from her purse and wrote it on her hand. She actually wanted to check out that store but for now, she would first check out one more book in the library, "So if you could recommend one book, only one and I know this is a very difficult question, which book would it be?" |

Nick felt a small twinge of disappointment; she did not react to the Quirker-discriminating author GS Laurent with the fire and anger he hoped for. He had begun to believe that maybe he had finally found someone in this stupid place that was like him, but maybe not. The disappointment he felt was heavier and more painful than he had expected.
No, he reassured himself in his mind. She was clearly just not aware enough of the discrimination they faced as Quirkers and what needed to be done about it. He could fix that, in time. He told himself he would.
When she asked about his favourite book, however, his disappointment was momentarily forgotten.
“From this place?” he cried. “Oh, my, there’s so many…” He glanced around as his mind scrolled through a list as long as the River Nile. She asked a very good question. Finally one spine jumped out to him and he leapt at it and seized it. He held the book out to her: naturally, the cover bore a golden dragon flying through the air and breathing a brilliant stream of fire. “This one: the Legacy of Uahn! It’s quite old, though not as old as Austen: it was written back in the 1950s. But it was one of the first books of its kind and it really revolutionised the fantasy genre. It’s one of those you can read over and over and not get bored of, you know? The worldbuilding is simply excellent! Few do it better.”

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She looked at her hand wondering if she had written the name, Nick warned her about, correctly. She had never heard about it and thus probably misunderstood what he meant. The idea to read about Quirks or Quirk-users in books never really was something she liked to do because she was not hundred percent convinced herself that she was glad with the idea of a quirk. She rather had a useless thing herself and not be at the Hero-school than what was happening now.
The Burning Lady in her mind only would chuckle and simply shrug, this guy is nice, why always see the negativity in things. Quirks are a wonderful idea and you will figure that out in the future. It certainly had to do with of course that track of thoughts, her firey mind, it had perhaps to do with her upbringing as she never had used the quirk for anything that it was really necessary for. Where would you need to blow things up for. It certainly was too strong to simply make popcorn.
She grinned at Nick as she asked him for his favourite book and she wondered if she had read anything, she probably did not. She wanted to say that she had read a lot but it was mostly the same books and she had other things to do, not that she liked it all but her mother formed her education. All she was proud of was her violin play right now.
She took a small step back when he jumped up to get a book but took a step closer when he showed her the cover. The book was a beautiful golden and she stared at the dragon. She could not really understand why she was so surprised, the reason why Rowan liked dragons was a childish story. There was a moment when her quirk first developed that she accidentally put things on fire and she had said she wanted to be a dragon in the future, she was probably like five or six. But her love for dragons had not seized. She looked up at Nick, "I want to read it." She said because he recommended it and she liked the idea of a fantasy book with dragons, few were to her liking so she perhaps had given up without really noticing and she was a sucker for a good worldbuilding. "It sounds like everything I want to read." She looked at the book, but she could understand if Nick would take it now because they talked about it, or perhaps he had his own copy because that made sense. |

Nick handed her the book. He did not mind giving her it; he had his own copy he had read a hundred times over, and he was delighted to hear that she wanted to read it, his doubts that she was like him momentarily assuaged. Could it be that she, too, understood the majestic appeal of dragons? At last, someone else who did.
“You like dragons, then?” he was unable to stop himself from asking. He had to know for sure. He sounded more excited asking her this than he knew he should have and immediately felt embarrassed, praying his cheeks were not red as he looked away.
He glanced back at her a second later, though, and his eyes wandered down her form with minds of their own. He stopped them quickly. What the hell was he doing? She was beautiful and like him in ways unlike anyone else he had met but – she was not Rin. Not Rin at all. He had no idea how strong she was. She could have a completely worthless Quirk for all he knew.
“Never met anyone with a dragon Quirk, but I hear they exist,” he continued as casually as he could. “Speaking of Quirks, what’s yours like? Mine is armour that can form over my body at will and makes me stronger. I’d demonstrate it for you, but I don’t think they’d appreciate that in here.”

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ As she said that she wanted to read it, Nick held the book in front of her and she took it, placing it on top of Emma and pressing it against her body to make sure not to drop it. She actually wanted to take another book as well but she decided to stop for now and just let it be for now, as she wanted to read this book first. She believed she finally met a person that understood her love for books and could even top that, so she definitely wanted to read this book, right now. She wouldn't mind dropping down in a corner here at the library, wasn't it that she was wearing a skirt and heels but to read it.
She was still looking at the golden cover because it was so mesmerizing. She was a bit taken aback about the question, first of all she wouldn't want to admit it that she as a little girl would wear some headband as if she had horns and a cape and sprint around the house, yelling at her mother: guaaah I am a dragon, watch my wrath. And explode the next following item. Thank god she learned to control her quirk later too so the explosions stopped. She looked at him because she had noticed him sounding thrilled and yet she believed he blushed very lightly or at least looked embarrassed. So she tilted her head a little to the left, her eyes trying to see anything that would admit his feelings, "I do." She couldn't stop smiling, this day ended up way different than she had thought. "I wished that I was a dragon when I was a toddler." She would not have said this if he had looked so confident as he did most of the time, but that one spark of embarrassment was enough.
She thought about it but she also never met anyone with a dragon quirk. Strange, she would have expected something, but on one hand, you didn't pick your own quirk. She would be intruged and super jealous if she would meet someone. She was surprised about the random quirk question but on one hand it wasn't so strange. She had already wondered what quirks her classmates had and now Nick told her his own. "I can explode things that I touch." Which was the most cheap ass explanation, "I mean to say, when I touch it, I create a spark by changing the time of the item with a rapid speed so it explodes." |

Nick had expected her to seize on his foolish show of embarrassment and call him out as he deserved, so his surprise at her instead confirming that she did, in fact, like dragons as much he did was the same level as being hit by cold water first thing in the morning.
Something very rare for him happened then: a real, genuine smile flashed across his face, even if only for a few seconds. He almost said that he had been similar, but stopped himself. No. It would not do to reveal that he had once been so vulnerable as to have dreamed of being a dragon, because dragons were legendary, fearsome creatures that could either crush or fly away from the things that hurt them, unlike his younger self. He was better than that now. The things he had once feared and loathed had made him stronger.
Any semblance of the smile was very much gone from his face now, brows lowered in a slight scowl and an ominous shadow having fallen across him. This girl was similar to Rin after all: she made him think of things he swore he would not normally, of saying things he thought he never would. He needed to get away from her before she muddied his mind further.
Even her revelation of a powerful-sounding Quirk was not enough to make him want to stay, even though a part of him wished to see it in action. He had thought that if she had mocked him for his embarrassment as he had expected then he would have had an excuse to challenge her to a spar in the gym and see her Quirk for himself, but her completely unexpected similar experience had derailed him entirely.
“Well, it was nice to meet you,” he said, his expression not changing. “But I should be getting back to my dorm. Plenty to study for, after all.”

| ◀ | The heart is a heavy burden ❤ She had wanted to bring a certain show around when she would get into a room and when people would get to know but right now she was throwing all those ideas away and decide to just do what felt right, that still included ignoring the Burning Lady for that matter but she was holding her mouth shut or well her track of thoughts were now focused too much on books for her other self to actually come up with bad ideas. Her chocolate brown eyes looked at Nick as she didn't want to miss an expression on his face.
It felt like a special thing and that felt as exaggerating as she only met him now for the first time but he seemed to be a very neutral being and that moment of embarrassment was a funny thing to see. She grinned back at him as he smiled at her, no idea how rare it was but she had definitely liked this meeting more than she had expected. She realized a bit too late that she had said she wanted to be a dragon when she was a child, how dumb that was. Dragons probably did not even exist for as far as she knew and she could not suddenly turn into a dragon, man she would be very curious to the person that had that quirk. For a dumb second, she wondered if something like that happened in the past, that the legend came from that but considering the reactions to quirks, she was sure it did not.
As her eyes looked from the shelf back to Nick, convincing herself that he smiled at her for her comment and not laughing at her for such a dumb idea, she noticed the changed expression and wondered if she had said something bad or that he remembered something bad as his look was now more ominous than before and not really well friendly looking compared to what she saw before. It did not really scare her off it simply surprised her. She had a face that enough people would have called a resting bitch face if she did not realize it herself and was lost in thoughts. That was not the case right now.
She nodded when he suddenly intended to leave, "Of course. I will see you in class." She said, still wondering if she had taken a wrong turn in the conversation and it looked as if it had gone very well. Which was definitely a first time for Rowan so it was disappointing that she managed to fuck it up still.
