Heathen
Tossing and turning, seemed to be the usual for Nureru for a while as his dreams haunted him but lately those sorts of things seemed to stop and at the most happened through the minimal application of bad dreams. That at this point 'bad' was subjective. Nureru had always heard dreams were roads to the subconscious and at this point, he had learned to navigate it to an extent. Lucid dreaming - Something he had been working on for a while, the sky was always red in his dreams, as for why, he didn't truly know, and for whatever reason, much like the night his family were killed it was a full moon. It cast an eerie glow over his dreams as if it was a beacon telling him, pulling him in with a gentle seat before all the horror would begin with a simple "welcome". Though he grew tired of these welcomes, not because just because reliving past trauma and being trapped in a looping cycle of thinking about it every night had become draining, no quite the opposite. He had simply become utterly bored with it. Many times in these dreams Nureru would have some sort of epiphany a sense of realization.
It had always started the same with him running through a darkened forest, a large cabin house tucked away within the mountain miles from the city, a small slice of paradise in its own right, but the forest lurked with dangerous animals all hours of the day. Yet he found himself frolicking through it as if it was the norm, and back then it was' for him anyway. Eventually, he'd stumble upon someone, sometimes even a younger version of himself, and always like clockwork, they'd either attack him or run from him. Some he'd chase all night, trying to get his hands on them, an overwhelming hunger overtaking him as he did so, a thirst for fluid, as his body would seemingly dry up and crumble into dust if he wasn't fast enough to get them. Sometimes they were just unbelievable fast, but lately, he had found himself becoming even faster.
He always did with each kill, its why he loved the times where he got to dream where those in it had the gull to come up and attack him. Often they'd hurt him, cut through him, torture him, but he'd enjoy every second of it. It was almost as if his mind liked destroying itself in his madness, at least that's what he inferred from his dreams. None the less, like always he'd awaken in a pool of sweat from his night terrors, or as he liked to call it "happy fun time". He'd absorb the sweat from out of his sheets, although he didn't like the 'taste' of it. "Taste" is the way he described certainly feelings of absorbing some moisture, some were easier than others, some smoother, some with different liquids, to him it was like sampling an array of dishes, and he was a picky critic. Often he'd just throw it in the dryer and let it do its work, but lately, he had been running low on cash, so washing his sheets willy nilly was no way to conserve. He needed to find a job and soon.
Today he found himself searching on the dark web, a small laptop-tablet combo in hand, swiping through with a smile on his face as he stifled a yawn. He had gotten a message of some guy looking for companions though it read more of an "I'll find you" kind of situation, though Nureru would simply respond that he was open to a "variety of work, as long as the pay was sufficient" not one to go into much detail over the internet, as self-incrimination was a thing, and even though the dark web had many encryptions and a multitude of channels for him to access, he wasn't the most skilled guy when it came to being versed in that. The water heater in his apartment liked to be fickle so it took a while at times for the bathwater to get hot enough for him to decide to fill the bath so he always decided to workout first.
With a stretch a lean and the pop of a few muscles, he'd begin to do his morning workout, a couple sits up, some push-ups, the occasional bit of jumping jackass before lifting some of his weights that he had in his rundown apartment. He'd finish up, take a nice bath with sufficient heat. After drying himself off, and absorbing some of the moisture, he'd grab a bottle of water from the fridge, his favorite brand of flavored water "cherry". He'd dress in a white tank top, black shorts and some black sandals, a small black coat before leaving out, to his knowledge it was going to snow soon, so he made sure to absorb some clean super hot bath water to regulate his body temperature enough to keep him warm and his blood pumping. He loved the snow so today seemed like it was going to be a good one!
He made his way out of his apartment, a brisk jog as he did so, making his way toward the stairs, his usual smile on his face. He turned to see one of his neighbor's doors open, a sweet old lady who he simply referred to as "Granny" she was a mean old bat, but she was always nice to him. She even helped him get this apartment, she had seen his dark side and instead of calling the cops she offered him a smile, warm meal and a place to rest his head before eventually helping him get the apartment across and down the hall. The door looked damaged, he wouldn't have noticed it if it wasn't for the fact that he ran past every day. His jogging in continued even though he stood in place, he turned to jog inside the room with a smile on his face. The place looked ransacked and as for the old woman well, she didn't look in the best of shape either. She had bruises all along her arms, even on her face but even so, Nureru's smile didn't leave his face.
To which she called him on in a weak fleeting voice "It's nice to see that smile on your face. One of the reasons I like yo-" she coughed, a little blood would escape her lips. Nureru's expression didn't waver, but his eyes opened a bit, showing a tinge of sadness that quickly left. He'd scoop her up on his back as he often did when he helped carry her up the stairs to her apartment, though this time it would be down and out of it. He'd close the broken door. Rushing her to the hospital on his back, nothing more than a simple extra blanket to keep her body warm as he did so, it almost looked liked man giving his sweet old grandma a piggyback ride, though some might've just thought he couldn't afford a car. He ran as fast he could to a hospital before letting the doctors take her. She gripped his hand tightly before letting him go, a small red hard candy would be placed in the palm of his hand, before she passed out from the pain of her injuries. He quickly left not wanting to be seen trusting that the doctors would do treat her well. Taking the candy and slipping into its mouth, cherry his favorite.
He made his way back to his apartment or rather around the way to ask some questions, some people said they had seen a group of guys try and rob her, they chased her into her apartment, in this area, people turned a blind eye to this sort of thing so he was surprised no one helped her. Though what he found odd and strange was that she didn't make any noise, at least not enough for Nureru to hear her, she didn't even call for help to his knowledge, and the walls to his apartment were then after all with as cheap as they were, how could he not hear someone beat her as he was only down the hall? That notion was strange, but regardless it bought with it a fury burning inside him.
He was going to take revenge, he was going to make them pay, all the while with a smile on his face. He went back outside for intel, eventually getting their trail. He tracked them into an even shadier part of town, as he made his way deeper into the darkest depths of the city. There was an abandoned underpass where gangs liked to hide out, hooligans, those who considered themselves criminals. He knew it well, he had carried out business there from time to time. So now it was just a matter of finding those who matched the descriptions of them. The hunt was on.
