feel the light shining in the dark of the night | December 8th
It had been a cool and crisp night. One of those December nights that you would look upon fondly when you are stuck deep in the grasp of winter. Toma had been appreciating its pleasantness for a few hours as he made his way home. He could have flown, or maybe even taken a cab, but he decided to walk. There was no rush since he was both dreading and looking forward to going home. The complex mix of emotions made a cocktail of nervousness that slowed him down.
"Things should be fine." He thought to himself as he dragged lightly on his smoke. Little trails of cinder and hot breath made clouds away from him as he pondered. "Haku knows about the job. He knows I have to make sacrifices sometimes." He tried to reassure himself as he finally turned down the street leading to their home.
As he grew closer to Home he noticed that none of the lights were on. Maybe Haku was asleep, or maybe they had gone out for the night. That's when he made a horrible revelation. He didn't have his key. He fished through his pockets like a madman but to no avail. He was keyless and would most likely have to wait for Haku or Yui to either wake up or come home.
"Still not so bad..." He grumbled as he stepped up to their door. A camelback of ashes hung from the end of his cigarette as he pried free one hand from his warm coat. He reached out to the door and tested it. Not locked. That was surprising and concerning. Haku was paranoid and always kept the apartment locked if he was asleep or out of the house.
Toma let his quirk creep on as he slowly opened the door. His hackles spiked up as he felt the cold air seep out from the opening door. Once the portal was open enough to see inside Toma felt the breath leak out of him too. He felt like all the warmth had been ripped out of him.
The apartment was dark, but even in the faint moonlight, he could tell what his judgment was. For the crime of abandoning his partner for his job, Toma paid the price of an empty home. Other than a few boxes and a trunk in the middle of the living space, it was spotless. Not even the furniture or appliances remained.
"Haku?" He called out quietly. "Yui?" He cried even weaker. As he made his way through the various rooms of his former hearth, he found more of the same. Yui's room was empty. The kitchen didn't even have a fridge or stove anymore. It was like all traces of his former life had just vanished out from underneath him.
Toma made it back to the boxes before he collapsed on top of one. With his head in his hands, he slumped atop the box with disregard of its contents. He sat there staring straight through his fingers in silence. It lasted a while, the deafening roar of emptiness, but Toma didn't know how long. It might have been an hour, it might have been seconds.
After a few phases of denial and bargaining with non-existent people in his head, he let loose a single deep sigh. A dark blue tinge of resign escaped with that sigh, along with any real understanding of how to cope with his situation. He had been abandoned before, more than once in his life, but this felt different. Haku had looked at him like a knight and shining armor, he had made him feel comfortable enough to let someone get close. He had made Toma happy.
After a while, his brain put up a fight. It did the only thing it could do and shoved all of his feelings deep inside, and left behind a sense of emptiness and despair. But at least he wasn't going to spend another two or three hours silently ruminating.
Toma did something he hadn't done in a long time. He pulled an old busted phone out of his pocket and immediately dialed a memorized number. One he hadn't called in months, one he thought he might not ever call again.
The phone rang for a while before a click and background static let him know he had connected. He didn't even wait for whoever picked up the phone to say hello. He just hit send on the prewritten text message and spoke up.
"Hey, it's me... Sun...." He had something stuck in his voice for a second, a little unnecessary emotion, so he cleared his throat with a hearty cough. "I just sent you an address G. It's my home. I'm alone and..." He didn't know what to say from there. Did he tell him he needed someone to be there for him? Did he keep it vague and hope G still came? The other person on the line still hadn't spoken yet as the frog caught in his throat. Finally, he let loose a sigh and told a simple truth. "I'm alone"

~Meanwhile~ G was home with his family. He helped set the tree, Miku handed over both Hana and G the ornaments. Kai was asleep. Basically the family was decorating the christmas tree and having fun. During that fun G's phone rang. It was the generic ringtone which suggested it was someone that wasnt on his contact list "Just a sec ladies. You can take over from there" G said and then kissed Hana and then took a few steps of distance so he can talk "New phone, who dis?" wasnt a new phone. He then heard Toma of all people. What the hell? And why call him? Well the way he sounded was like... distress? Huh... He's alone. How the tides turn. Life is funny. It was like their roles got reversed. "Oh." was G's first reaction. But then he said something smarter then the generic oh "I see.... Umm... where are you?" he asked him. Not quite sure what to think. Didnt he have some family? There was that annoying whats her face from the chat and that G0d guy. God, G couldnt even remember their usernames. So... what happened? Why was he alone? Questions that G will ask later

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | G had said he would come over, which was a small relief, but he seemed unconcerned and distant about the whole thing. That wasn't a surprise to Toma since the last time they talked hadn't gone well. Honestly that was his fault too, he had been so full of himself at the time.
He knew it would take G a while to get there so he stepped out and walked down the street to the local convenience store. The teller knew him in passing but still asked for identification when he tried to buy a six pack of beer. When he returned home he sat on the front deck and lit up a smoke and cracked open one of the luke warm beers.
Haku had always asked him to smoke outside, since it wasn't healthy and was a bad influence on Yui, and the same went for drinking. That didn't really matter now, and it was honestly a little illegal to be drinking outside, even if he was on private property. He sighed at those facts and snuffed his smoke out, before dragging himself and the six pack back inside to wait on G.
"Guess there's no one to yell at me about it now." He moaned wistfully.

Once Toma told him where the two would meet, he ended the call and then walked over to Hana and said "I'll be back. I promise. This is no Vigilantism. And feel free to call me if needed" he then kissed Hana on the cheek and then made his way to Toma.
After a bit of travel, he arrived to the place and saw Toma. G crossed his arms and then asked "Okay. What happened?" He wasnt familiar with Toma's situation and he hadnt heard hide nor hair ever since he up and left to become a Hero. Were G0dKK and Zephyr mad about that too? Was that why he was all alone now? The Vigilante wasnt sure and he wasnt gonna make stuff up like theories or whatever. So he asked Toma and waited for an answer.
G hoped there was a good reason for everything. He just left his family on his own birthday to see him again. So G was a bit peeved as the timing was ... not the best. Nevertheless he was here to seek out Sunhawk or Vega or whatever he calls himself now, to try and help him. Since they're allies or something like that

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | "I don't really know." He held his hands out in both directions, like some kind of showman at a circus. " I came home to find this. I've been gone november, out on a job."
He had already crushed a few of the beers by the time G showed up. He wasn't drunk, but he was definitely feeling warm and fuzzy. Somewhere inside he knew he was being selfish for asking G to come over, but his surface thoughts weren't focusing on that.
"Hey man. I'm sorry about before. All of that 'what's right and not hurting people's business'" He took a sip from the fifth of six beers. "Its not my place to pretend like I know what's going on in this world."
"I'm sorry if I dragged you away from your family or something important." He pushed a box over to him with his foot. It was pretty heavy and sturdy, full of old manga and light novels. "Your the closest thing I have to a friend though, so I didn't know who else to call."
He could tell that G was sour about the whole situation. He had given up watching the gang a while back, when he heard that G had given up the ghost and settled down. He figured the guy deserved his privacy since he was out of the game.

So he doesnt know what happened? But then G got his answer when Toma spoke again "You've been gone... since November... on a job? Did you tell them? Say bye? Or did you just up and leave, like you left the Storm Knights?" G asked He then noticed some beer cans that were crushed. G sighed and summoned Goliath and then gave him an order "Go clean up those beers" Goliath nodded and picked up the empty beer cans and started eating them. G treated Goliath like natures vacuum cleaner, let him eat trash.
Now that THAT was out of the way, he turned to face Toma who had apologized about before. And he apologized from dragging him away from his family. And well, G sighed again when he heard the next thing he said "Bruh. The fact that I'm your only friend is... not gonna lie... pretty sad. I mean, you already know I'm an ex villain killer mugger guy. Im a lowlife who just recently got a normal life. I'm sure you can find someone. But dammit man, you cant be a flaker like this. No one likes a flaker" G told him as he sat down beside him.
He then decided to try and do... something "Ok bruh. Whats your plan now?"

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | "I told them I would be gone for a while. It's part of the job. I was watching some younger Yakuza members that were…" He stopped talking immediately and took a sip of his beer. He had to remember to keep confidentiality about what he had been doing. It might have been a job he had been asked to do by the Hero association but it was still a covert operation.
"I don't know what I'm going to do. I've got this whole house I guess." He looked around and sighed at the emptiness of it all. It had been almost too cluttered just a few months prior. "My mother passed in August so I don't have any family. And I don't trust the other Heroes, they are all fakes and fame obsessed."
"I have been thinking about trying to find my dad, or maybe any members of his family." He drained the last beer and stood up, tossing it up in the air for Goliath to catch. "There's bound to be someone out there. I obviously wasn't an immaculate birth, so chances are I have other siblings or some sort of family I can find."
"I think I need to end this Lone Wolf shit." He whipped a single droplet of beer off his chin. "For my own sanity."

G listened as Toma spoke his tale how he was gone for a while. But... that tale was a short one. It lasted a sentence or less as he sipped on his booze. He then changed the subject from his mission to him not knowing what to do and well how his mother passed away and how he doesnt trust heroes and how he thought about finding his father or other family members. He spoke he needed to end this lone wolf gig for his sanity
G sighed and spoke "Well welcome to my world..." Goliath munched on what Toma threw to him "...where the heroes are fake heroes that are more fame obsessed maniacs and Im all alone. Thats my life... or was" well, since he was older he should erm... teach Toma? Advise him? "You need to make a family not search for your old rotten one. Forget your dad. If he didnt find you all these years, chances are he aint worth looking for. He doesnt want you. Nothing good comes from fathers" he spoke the last sentence in a low growl before continuing "If you ask me, you should come back to the Storm Knights, let the Vigis be your family. The Hero system is too cold hearted. And the only reason I consider being a pro is because I might be of use to the group as an inside man. Im still a Vigilante, just a documented one. Thats how I see it"
He then yawns bored "So what do ya say? Forget your old ties, make new ones. Or do ya just wanna listen to my sob story and realize why Im right?"

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | Toma just looked at G and sighed. He was right and wrong. The vigis could be his family, that was true, but he couldn't give up his license. He was to obsessed with hero work. If he quit, not only would he no longer be financially supported but they would watch him like a hawk. If he acted as a vigilante again he would most likely go to prison, for illegal use of his quirk. He needed his license , without it he would be broke and roaming the streets like some sort of mugger.
"I'll think about it." He wasn't entirely lying. He was willing to work with the gang again, but had to be careful. "But…."
He held a hand out towards G, outstretched fingers curled slightly upwards. "I have to find out about my family G. I need to know why I have been left alone, and who cursed me with this quirk."
"I'd honestly give everything if I didn't have this." The beer had started to hit him a little bit, and his thoughts were fuzzy and deep. "But while I do have it, I will use it, and with my license I can use it without worrying about getting busted at every corner. I'm doing the same things we were already doing, but better than before."

G crossed his arms and gave Toma a look as the ex Vigilante said that he'll "think about it". G took those words with a grain of salt. Toma probably thought G was telling him to become a Vigilante again, which was something G wasnt telling him. Like what was the problem of being a Pro Hero AND a Storm Knight. G would do it if he became a Pro. He was just.... very indecisive should he be one. And would he be accepted in that community as an ex villain and an ex vigilante to boot
Toma soon held a out out towards G, which confused the Vigilante, but then he spoke how he has to find his family. That just made G frown and have an angry expression "Tch. A futile search if you ask me. A waste of time. Your Quirk doesnt need to come from your parents. I should know. My Quirk didnt come from either of my parents. Both were useless quirkless fucks." he looked if he had any beer to drink and then continued talking as if teaching Toma. He spoke rather matter of factly "You know...children will either manifest one of their parent's Quirks or a new composite Quirk formed by the fusion of the two, but and this is a big butt since it might make your parent search futile... BUT a Quirk can form in a child that is entirely unrelated to their genetic lineage, akin to a mutation."You know for a guy like G who is all thuggish and seemingly uneducated, it might be strange how he kinda knows a lot about quirks about their inner workings and how they function. But once you know the secret, you'd know that... its obvious he knows. His more distant family, his cousins back in Hawaii actually study the inner workings of quirks. And G has had some mild very mild contact with his family. But it was enough for him to pick up a few things and to come to his own scientific conclusions from his real life experience on the field.
Either way, his entire speech to Toma was a warning that his search for family could only be met with hurt and disappointment, and G wanted to shield Toma of those feelings

feel the light shining in the dark of the night | "You're probably right G." He stood up from his box and stretch, the blood flowing through his body and making him feel a little light-headed for a moment. The beer probably didn't help with that either. "But when has something like that ever stopped people like us."
"You know..." The depressive thoughts from earlier had slipped his mind, at least for the moment, so he let out a weak smile. "I used to think we had nothing in common, besides our mutual desire to bust THunder. I guess I was wrong though. We both want the same things. Peace, Family, and the right to do good."
"I think it might be time for you to go, bud." He turned his back to G, to look around the apartment. He had some things he had to do. He needed to get his shit in order. "Your family is probably worried about you."
Toma wouldn't lie. It hurt a little to say that. He thought he had people who were worried about him too. But that evidently wasn't the case. He was alone again, at least for now.
"Don't worry about me, if that's something that will make you feel better." He tried that weak smile again, he could tell G had almost a fatherly level of concern for him. "I'll be fine, eventually."

G sighed when Toma said 'when has something stopped people like him'. "Prepare for disappointment" G thought to himself. He didnt tell that to Toma. He thought about telling him, but decided against that. Toma then stood up, stretched a bit and then made this weak ass smile. He then spoke how he didnt think he and G would have something in common, but turned out they do "Hah! I'll drink to that" G said
But all good things came to an end. And so did this lil meeting. G shrugged. "Yeh. Guess you're right. I think a birthday party cant work with the main birthday man himself. Will you be ok tho?" he asked. But Toma said not to worry about him. G took things Toma said with a grain of salt. If his Quirk had a bigger range. He'd make one of his summons follow Toma. But alas, he cant do that. His range became shorter ever since he manifested the ability to summon Striker. Range was sacrificed for a new summon. He had to think of a way to bring that range back to normal.. Toma thoug insisted he'll be fine... eventually. Which made G sigh once again
"Fine fine. If you say so. But if theres any trouble just call me" he said and then got up, turned his back and walked away, with hands in his pockets
