I'LL DO MY BEST, JUST TAKE A CHANCE ON ME. THE BOY BOBBED HIS HEAD, not wanting to speak too much more about his stuffed animal’s fabricated other life. It didn’t feel right to lie to a kid, even if it was a lie that they were excited about. As he fussed with the putty in his hands, Kasumi prattled on about how she knew Mosa was tired, about Aki and all of that. The boy began with a relatively subdued expression, but as the girl spoke with excitement, a small smile grew on his face. And, this time, the teen did not tuck the smile away. There was a certain sadness in his expression, but it was very subtle underneath the warmth that had trickled in around the edges.
“You’ve had bad times too, huh?” the boy murmured. He wasn’t prying-- hell no-- it just… he didn’t take Mosa to be the kind of person who inflicted bad times onto anybody, especially cute little kids. Something darkened in Kenji’s eyes, but he didn’t say anything. He’d take a broken bottle to any person who had the gall to make other kids miserable.
He let the weird silence stretch before asking to do something. The girl proposed coloring.
“Sure,” he agreed, “I love coloring.”
The boy tucked the putty back into its container, slipped the container into his pocket, and walked on his knees to the small table where he assumed coloring took place. There were sheets of paper and books and supplies of all sorts scattered about haphazardly for their use. He'd wait until Kasumi gave him some kind of directive.

A quick little while passed, and very little of sounds were abound. Mosas curiousity about what was happening upstairs was becoming even more so apparent. On the one hand it sort of made sense. Both of them were from an orphanage, so assumedly both of them would be a little bit awkward to get the discussion going at first. On the other hand, Mosa had always considered being with Kasumi quite therapeutic compared to Kenjis well... bit more rambunctious ways. He hoped he wasn't too scary for Kasumi to hang out. Maybe they were just drawing something? That never made too many sounds aside from little excited babbling of ideas...
However, once the meals were finally done, separated into 3 little cute piles of rice, mushroom and bacon in their own separate bowls, and placed onto the table, with a big Jug of water, and all the utensils ready. He put the tv on too. Admittedly, he didn't usually watch tv when visitors were around, but in this regard, he wanted to make the situation as homely as possible for Kenji. He felt like he needed some sort of break from the monotony of multiple children under the same roof... For now, it was just the news though. Hopefully the cartoons would begin soon.
He proceeded to clap his hands together and raised his voice just a little bit. "Kenji! Sumi! Time to eat!" Time to see how they had reacted to each other proper! As they would come down, like a butler, he would bow and proceed to point towards table. "Todays meal is a humble risotto. Of course there is plenty of tasty bits in there of different kinds to make it a little bit more colourful, but I do hope you like what is on offer."
Seating himself at the table, He crossed his palms together, giving Kasumi a little look. "Oh yes... Kenji. In this house we tend to recite a little prayer before eating. If you want you can try to follow the words, or just cross your hands." He was prepared mentally, that Kenji wouldn't exactly like this... but keeping the ritual going was a pretty important thing to remind the children how to do it. "Bless our meal oh lord, may you always be on board, amen..." A momentary silence followed, as he pointed towards the plates and said. "Dig in."
However, he placed the remote for the tv on the table. "If you have something you would like to watch during the meal, don't mind me. I am not picky about what we watch." He hoped he didn't come off as too religiously judging of a person, despite having all these rituals. For now, the tv was babbling news of different kinds.

Kasumi was quite happy that Kenji wanted to color with her, Mosa was usually too busy to color with her so it would be fun to have someone join her in her favorite activity. Kasumi carefully got down from the bed and went over to her coloring supply cubby, pulling out the necessary tools needed to draw with. As she was getting the paper however, a small wince left her mouth as the paper had cut her the wrong way as she got it out, resulting in a papercut. Kasumi looked down at her finger, seeing the small drop of red surfacing on her skin. She stared down at it blankly, knowing the cut would go away in a moment but the mild sting would last a little longer. Kasumi wiped the droplet of blood on her skirt, hoping Kenji wouldn't notice as she picked up the coloring supplies and went back over to the boy. "Let's color now, ok?" Kasumi said with a small smile as she sat down at the small table in her room with Kenji and began drawing.
After a little bit, Kasumi soon heard the familiar ring of her father's voice calling her, telling her it was time for dinner. Placing a green crayon down, Kasumi looked over at Kenji and spoke up, "Let's go downstairs. Papa has dinner ready for us," she said slowly getting up before walking out of her room with Kenji and slowly coming down the stairs, making sure to hold on to the railing so she wouldn't accidentally trip and fall. Kasumi made her way to the kitchen and gave her papa a quick hug before climbing up into her chair at the table, nothing out of the ordinary there. Kasumi folded her hands together as Mosa had taught her to do before a meal, waiting for papa to start before they could all eat together. Once finished with the prayer, Kasumi said a small 'amen' before unclasping her hands and picking up her chopsticks before taking a bite of her meal. When Mosa said they could watch tv, Kasumi's eyes lit up as she spoke, "Can we watch puri puri princess papa?" Kasumi stopped for a moment as she looked at Kenji, toning her excitement down before speaking up, "Oh Kenji is the guest...he should get to pick what's on the tv," Kausmi said, lightly pushing the remote closer to the boy. She could always watch her shows later, she didn't want to be mean to the other by only watching her shows.

I'LL DO MY BEST, JUST TAKE A CHANCE ON ME. AT A FEW POINTS IN HIS YOUNG LIFE-- mostly in foster homes, or in after-school programs-- Kenji had the opportunity to color with younger kids. Kasumi retrieved materials, Kenji selected a crayon, and after a few minutes he began to draw a robot. His go-to's were robots and superheroes-- and, after Charles came into his life, cowboys-- but with Charles gone, neither cowboys nor superheroes seemed to pique his interest anymore.
Before long, the duo was summoned by Mosa's booming voice. Kenji had, at this point, filled an entire page and begun on a second. He left the drawings on the table, and began to follow Kasumi downstairs. Mosa stood waiting for them at the door to the kitchen, bowing at the waist. The teen quirked the smallest of smiles. The boy waited until Mosa and Kasumi went to their seats, before settling in the last set place. He took his seat, began to reach of his chopsticks, and--
"Oh yes... Kenji. In this house we tend to recite a little prayer before eating--"
A what now? Kenji looked towards Kasumi, who obediently folded her hands. Kenji followed suit. They'd never prayed, not in a single one of the houses he'd stayed in. But he was a guest here, which meant he did as they did. Kenji bowed his head and said nothing as Mosa blessed the meal, his hazel eyes lifting towards his two hosts.
When they moved for their utensils, Kenji did too, clasping his chopsticks between two hands and murmuring a brief "Itadakimasu," before positioning the chopsticks in his hand for dinner.
He took the first mouthful of risotto-- which appeared to be a rice dish reminscient of a stir fry, at least according to the boy's limited life experience-- and the wash of flavor that flooded Kenji's mouth made him pause. His parents had never been cooks. Kenji had eaten so much instant ramen in his youth that the scent of it turned his stomach. Even in his various foster homes, his various "parents" favored easy, boxed meals.
This tasted so much heartier than that-- this tasted homemade. He couldn't remember ever having something this good. Kenji took another bite, the corner of his eyes growing wet. He made no sign of hearing Mosa's remark about the t.v.
It wasn't until Kasumi spoke brightly of wanting to watch Puri Puri Princess that the boy looked up, as if in a daze. He swallowed his second bite, staring at the remote. Truth be told, he didn't watch much t.v. When they had, his dad had always controlled the remote.
"Puri Puri Princess is fine..." Kenji yielded.
He looked back to the risotto, took a third bite.
"Thank you for having me over," Kenji murmured, mostly to his plate of risotto. He wondered if Mosa could even hear him over the drone of the t.v., "This is... delicious."

As much as it was optional, Mosa was very curious to see if Kenji would actually do the recital with them. He hoped he hadn't pressured him to do so. In the end, he did end up crossing his hands, And then proceeded to eat. However, as he himself started to eat too, Kasumi proceeded to suggest her own favourite show. "Oh, it's that time of the day already?" He actually had to check his clock. Hmm, cooking had taken quite a lot of time. His eyes glanced towards Kenji, who seemingly was enjoying his food, but now looked like somebody had hit him with a brick joke. Admittedly, puri puri princess wasn't exactly something a boy his age would enjoy, but since he was alright with it, Mosa gave a nod in Kasumis direction. "Well, you heard him. I think the answer to what we will be watching is now up to you." A big permission was given.
For a little while, the house was filled with the always colourful theme song of puri puri princess... Taking how many times mosa had heard it, it was hard to forget. That and it was naturally made to be as catchy as possible. "Puri puri, want a pudding!~" Oh yeah, he didn't have any dessert for them this time... but hopefully the duo didn't notice. His curiosity instead went in a different direction. "I assume Kasumi already showed you her drawings?" He looked at Kenji. "I know back when I had a coworker visiting me, she outright drew a picture of her to commemorate it." He mildly chuckled to himself.
"I know seeing them makes me immediately a little bit more relaxed after a hard days work." He ate a little bit of his food again. in that regard, he proceeded to ask a question, that could have very well been asked in one of his therapy sessions. "What do you yourself enjoy doing? What does the orphanage offer you in regards to creativity?" There was a bit of curiosity in there too. Always good to find ways to improve things in that regard, with all the weird rumours going about...

Kasumi's eyes widened when Kenji said he wanted to watch Puri Puri Princess, well more like he simply agreed to watching it after Kasumi had suggested it. Kasumi turned to Mosa, getting his approval to see if they could really watch Kasumi's favorite show. When the verdict was made, Kasumi brightly smiled as she turned the television on, her favorite show having just started with the theme song playing. Kasumi happily sang along to the theme song and continued eating as she watched her program. Kasumi always watched Puri Puri Princess every night with her papa, having never missed an episode of it. It made her laugh when Mosa would sing along to the songs or do some of the action poses they did on screen. Kasumi would also try and imitate them, even having memorized the dance in every episode.
Once Kasumi finished up her meal, she excused herself from the table, taking her drink with her and setting it in the table in the living room where the tv was before getting ready to preform the dance she had oh so loved. "Puri Puri Princess, open and start! Banish the darkness from our hearts!" Kasumi sang along with the theme song, getting into the show and not paying mind to Kenji and Mosa as they sat and continued talking at the table.

I'LL DO MY BEST, JUST TAKE A CHANCE ON ME. THE SHOW THAT BLARED TO LIFE was very pink, and very girly. It held Kenji's attention for half a second, maybe, and then he was over it. He returned to the risotto, teasing it with his chopsticks and taking another hungry mouthful. Mosa, similarly disinterested, made small-talk with the boy.
Mosa mentioned the drawings, and Kenji bobbed his head.
"We were... actually drawing before we came downstairs," he said simply, smiling privately, "So... yeah. I did see her drawings."
If Mosa were to venture upstairs at that very moment, he'd even find a scribble of Kenji's among the mix, now, too. A superhero wielding a sword would be found flagrantly out-of-place amongst he animals made of basic shapes, houses, and stick-figure renditions of Mosa and Kasumi.
Kenji scooped another mouthful of risotto into his mouth.
Mosa's following question gave the boy pause. The tips of his ears flushed, and his gaze cut sidelong towards Kasumi. This entire time, he'd managed to avoid the topic of being at an orphanage. The last thing he needed was Mosa spilling the beans about Kenji being some charity case. The boy glanced back at Mosa, having decided that he was in the clear, that Kasumi had missed her father's faux pas.
"I like to skateboard... or, uh... liked to. I broke my board," the teen explained. He jabbed at a pile of rice with the tip of his chopsticks, but didn't pick it up. He simply teased the clump apart while he spoke, "I... play video games..." Or played, since the orphanage took his handheld console away "for safe keeping". Fucking bullshit.
The orphanage question was weird, though. Kenji paused in his assault of the risotto.
"They have coloring and craft projects for the little kids, I guess," the boy murmured. A terseness was creeping into his tone-- as if those activities were below him when facilitated by the orphanage.

Mosa nodded proudly, like a parent would hearing about their kid having fun. That and Kenji didn't seem TOO perturbed by her presence, which was a good thing. Some boys could get awfully rowdy about girly things. Not that Mosa thought drawing was girly. Just maybe the drawing topics. All in all, he was just relieved they were truly getting along.
Of course, the question he had asked, was a little bit on the risky side cause of that. For some reason he glanced at Kasumi. Ah. Of course. Mentioning the orphanage was probably awkward for him. Nobody would talk about something like that with their friends around... There was something really awkward about talking therapeutic things in a casual room like this, with magical girls blaring their spells outloud on tv. Even still though, the boy did answer... and already Mosa felt like apologizing for the skateboard. "My condolences." Once wasn't too bad, right? that and he played video games... "Ah, unfortunately I don't have any consoles myself. More of a book person." He took a little bit of food again... just to keep himself from babbling too much. "Comic books too of course." Perhaps those would be more to his liking...
...And yes, it was very clear the boy didn't enjoy being at the orphanage. And looking at the clock, it was becoming the sort of point, where he just had to break the kind of depressing news. "I do apologize about how long the cooking took. Perhaps I put a little bit too much effort into it. Didn't leave that much time for us to uh... 'Hang out'." He clasped his middle and index fingers together, and pointed at the boy. According to the comics, this was probably 'hip'.
He looked towards Kasumi watching tv. "Although I don't think they will mind, if you stay a bit longer, atleast until the shows over... Kasumi would probably like that too." He placed his chopsticks over the bowl and stood up. "I will go and finish the dishes before that, if you don't mind..." He was giving the sort of look, that if Kenji wanted to talk some more, He wouldn't mind.

I'LL DO MY BEST, JUST TAKE A CHANCE ON ME. KENJI'S ANSWERS WERE MET WITH stilted response-- an apology, and a confession of not having any consoles. Well... so much for that. Kenji teased his risotto further before taking another bite. Mutual interests were an easy topic of conversation, when they existed. But when there weren't any, things kind-of... fell flat.
Kenji found respite in his bites of food, and in the somewhat nonsensical magical girl's show.
"Cool," he said in response to Mosa's proclamation that he liked books, including comics. Kenji had never been much of a reader, so even his feigned interest was somewhat dispassionate. Kenji followed Mosa's gaze towards the clock as the mountain of a man apologized for his own absenteeism.
He was kind-of awkward, wasn't he? Not in a bad way, though. Kenji could tell that Mosa was really trying, even if certain mannerisms or turns-of-phrase felt stilted.
Kenji shook his head as the man apologized, "The food is really good. And I didn't mind hanging out with Kasumi."
Really. Honestly. They'd had fun together.
And, just like that, Mosa was done eating and gathering his dishes, insisting that it would probably be okay for Kenji to hangout until, at the very least, the show was over.
"Oh, sure," the teen replied. Of course they'd have to go back to the orphanage. His visit couldn't last forever, right. Kenji's gaze dropped towards the risotto. He supposed he'd better finish quickly, then, lest he couldn't take the food with him.
Whatever subconscious desires to keep talking Mosa was trying to communicate, Kenji was totally oblivious to it. He read Mosa's statements at face value-- that he could stay for the express purpose of finishing his dinner and the show, and then it would be back to the orphanage with him! Kind of a depressing thought, in its own right.
Kenji finished his risotto, watching the show with only half-hearted interest.

With the dishes washed in relative silence, aside from the sounds of the tv, it was time to go. The mood was a little bit low. Problem of trying to help somebody temporarily like this, was that it was only a temporary solution. And any long term solution was quite a lot of responsibility on such a short notice... And yet, Mosa couldn't help but wonder how he could help the boy. He could maybe ask some people at the church to look for a parent for him, but he wasn't sure if that sort of parent was good for him. He wasn't exactly ecstatic about visiting his home either...
Well, at this point it was sort of pointless to mull about it. "Okay, Kenji. Time to go." He started putting his coat and shoes on. "Kasumi! Come tell your new friend bye." Hey, atleast they could lengthen the situation a little. "Of course, if he doesn't mind, we can always invite him over again sometimes. Maybe next time you could visit him even." Mosa proceeded to put his hands in his pockets. "That and of course, I have my own occasional visits. We can see each other a plenty still..."
In the end, the only thing left, was a car trip home. After that, it was uncertain how things would go.

I'LL DO MY BEST, JUST TAKE A CHANCE ON ME. THE REST OF THE EVENING PASSED quietly—Kasumi absorbed in her show, and Mosa tending to the dishes. In the air, the unspoken “next steps” hung. Dinner had only been a momentary interruption of a much more pervasive truth—Kenji would have to return to the orphanage. It was the sad truth of it all. Mosa heralded their departure, goodbyes were exchanged between the pink-skinned child and the red-haired boy. Mosa suggested that he could come over again. Or that she could visit him. Kenji cast an uncertain gaze Mosa’s way, but assured the pink child that, “It was fun drawing with you, Kasumi-san. I hope we get to see one another again.”Polite bows were exchanged, and the pair disembarked for the car. A quiet pit formed in the pit of Kenji’s stomach, and the redhead tucked his head, keeping his eyes on the glass of the car window. Kasumi was lucky, to have a father like Mosa. One who made dinner and genuinely seemed to care for her. She was a nice kid. She deserved it. As the pair boarded the car, Mosa filled the quiet space with casual conversation, and Kenji politely replied back, but his mind was elsewhere. Did his poor luck with families bespeak some failing on his own part? Were the gods just playing some sort of sick, twisted game on a soul that had been particularly problematic in centuries prior? The teen glanced out the window, watching streetlights flick by. It wasn’t though the Kenji of present-day had done much to earn a good life for himself, either. All he could do was steadily improve and hope for the better. - fin - | 262 words ooc notes |
