((Deguchi's saga part 3))
Hotarubi Deguchi had set about writing invitations for high level politicians whom she suspected might be natural fits for her cause with all her industry. Armed with her study of Japanese politicians, enough coffee for a couple all-nighters, and the patience to use the search engine on her laptop until it ran out of batteries, she'd come up with a list of possible sympathizers (and just as importantly potential endorsements), then sent out e-mails to hook anyone she could manage and begin building bridges between herself and these influential strangers. All in all, it hadn't worked particularly well... there wasn't a lot of news related to her that wasn't more about her father, and what news existed regarding her alone was probably the sort of thing she didn't want spread around. Few had a reason to go out on a limb for her, regardless of her message... especially considering how little she had to offer in return, in the way of her own influence and funds.
Persistence was one of her strong points, however. Wherever she found returned interest, she responded quickly and enthusiastically, hoping to keep the communication chain open. If anyone was willing to continue engaging her, it probably spoke to either a certain madness of their own: either an intense care for Japanese politics, for a pro-quirker message, or, perhaps, just a morbid curiosity towards what sort of person she was, arranging these in-person meetings over e-mail, with no go-betweens as far as staff. If they looked up her campaign page online and saw what she looked like, they'd probably grow just that much more curious about her political bid.
To Deguchi's amazement, something like a dream had occurred... she hadn't hooked a fellow politician, but really, something even better. The 37 year old (not so far from her own age, she mused) face of a major organization, and what a face it was! Of course, she wasn't just excited because a hot guy wanted to talk to her; even better, he was a big time player in terms of working with the Japanese government and their military. In fact, he had such influence over the political sphere, he could be considered a much larger player than her own father. If anything, he was the kind of guy that her father had to think about when it came to making each of his decisions: the kind of guy who could make or break a career with the funding and connections available to him.
The thought frightened Deguchi, but also, exhilarated her. Even if she couldn't get money out of him, how exciting would it be to meet a person like that and see what he thought about her campaign? If he told her she didn't have a chance, well, he wouldn't be the first. But what if she and this unique individual connected on some level regarding her mission and he supported her ambitions for office? Was it a chance she could afford to pass up? Certainly not, even if his denial became another big nail in her coffin.
With these thoughts and others on her mind, Deguchi slicked her hair down as much as she could (it popped back out ten minutes later), put on her nicest suit (it was very much like the ill-fitting others), and grinned as she arrived generously early to the family restaurant where she'd asked him to meet her for coffee or a meal that noon. Truth be told, it was a little more common and noisy than the type of place it'd make sense for a big shot like himself to be seen eating; some of the booths were occupied by old timers while others hosted mothers and fathers with so many kids they nearly spilled out the seats. Deguchi just liked it for the coffee and the founders, a couple of old-timers who were so pro-quirk that they'd slip her a free dessert from time to time. Perhaps fittingly, the name was the Cherry Pie Diner. This time, she was really counting on the free cherry pie to sweeten up her companion...
She grabbed a booth, then politely informed the young waitress that she was waiting on another guest before placing her order. Ordinarily, it was pretty nice that the waiters and waitresses here treated her as just another gal off the street, since that made her feel at home and easy... but she wondered if that was such a good thing in this situation. If the manager wandered out and started calling her "Ol' Iron Jaw" or "Snake Stripes" (he hadn't even gotten that name from her old days right after all this time), she might just scream. Ultimately, she decided she'd rather risk being laughed at, if the alternative was to go to some upscale eatery and have the waiters and waitresses dropping things in fright over her face, as they sometimes did.
Deguchi tried her best not to look like she was watching the door as she fiddled with her silverware and her tie, over and over again, in turn. Would the COO show up himself? Or would he send someone else to talk on his behalf? She'd even brought her laptop on the off case that she'd misread entirely and he actually planned to meet her on a video conference.

"Oh just for once, I want to go outside, who cares that it looks shabby, you should have seen some places Takumi brought me." Was all he said when he got out of the car, the big black car surely asked for an audience and the handsome man that stepped out had been seen on television a lot, whether that be a conference, an interview or simply advertisement, his face was recognizable. The man laughed at the pouting face of his guard and walked towards the door, "You can wait here if it's too shabby for you." He grinned as he continued to walk, he had never been here, surely it was interesting and he opened the door, greeted the waitress that stood there too baffled to say a thing and thus Takeo decided to look around. Hmm, who was it that he needed, surely his assistant had done the mailing. She had asked him his opinion and with how business was going around now and no interesting sells or buying he was interested in doing something else. His brain had already scanned the room within seconds. Too many kids for his liking, too many hipsters that stared at him and a handful of waitresses that swooned over his looks, now the latter part wasn't bad at all. He would wink at them, wasn't it that he wore an eye patch. Finally, he found someone dressed in a suit, well the suit looked a bit too big and ill-fitting but the description was pretty accurate so he decided to take the guess. If this was about something he liked, he might suggest taking her to a tailor, his tailor for example, yes, an impression was very important. He noticed people that came running from the kitchen part, or that's what he thought to the room where he stood. As he made his way to the woman that seemed to be his appointment, he simply looked up and gave a wave. So, this felt weird, he should really get to these places more often, he felt like a celebrity. Technically he was but he wasn't a movie star, maybe they heard about his new research method and the investigation within the hospital, that would be a good thing for him to do, he walked to the booth and bumped with his hip against the table to lean slightly against it. "Miss Deguchi I believe?" He offered his hand because his brain already gave him enough insight that it was her. "It is nice to meet you and this place, it's unbelievable, so many different people." He always hung out with the snobs, now that was getting boring.

Deguchi was an equal mixture of shocked and relieved as Takeo appeared, on-time tor the appointment. In her sector of work, she met politicians and officials all the time, so one might not expect her to be star struck, but she found it very different, meeting someone whose face appeared on magazines rather than just newspapers. It would also behoove her to remember she was 3 years the man's senior, having just hit the big four-oh, but she certainly didn't feel like she had the authority of either an elder or even a peer.
At any rate, she tried not to look too thirsty, in either the literal or the figurative sense, as she greeted Takeo. "Welcome! Hotarubi Deguchi, at your service," she introduced herself, standing for a handshake. Since he had already begun leaning at the table, thus brought her slightly closer in proximity than she'd intended. "Settle down, Deguchi," the civil servant thought to herself. Thankfully(?), her face was currently wearing a giant grin with the tongue sticking out, so it hid whatever feelings of girlish excitement she might be feeling under that generally bizarre expression.
"Please excusssssse this," she hissed, as her tongue cooled against her jaw. Soon enough, she rolled it back in and adopted a more normal face. "Kihihi... one of several campaign trail difficulties," she admitted. Takeo would have a moment to make an introduction to his own, before a waitress showed up to take their order. She reflected for a moment that the same waitress who joked around and teased at her during the middle of her mayoral bid seemed completely tongue-tied and star struck in the presence of Takeo. Perhaps "presence" was something she needed to work on.
Deguchi ordered a coffee, then, after hearing Takeo's order, would wait for the waitress to move out of earshot. She cleared her throat, folded her hands, then began; her tongue flapped out as soon as she did. "Takeo-san, thank you so much for taking time from your busy schedule to meet me. I'm looking for sponsors- and advisers who know a thing or two about sponsoring campaigns- to help me secure funding for my own campaign," she proposed. Mayoral campaigns didn't grow on trees... to get advertising, TV time, and such, as well as hopefully hire staff down the line, she was going to need investment. That would require buy-in from people with money. She didn't plan on running an expensive campaign, but even the little city of Komae had a population big enough that she couldn't afford to be as "grassroots" as driving her campaign car out to meet them all personally.
"Have you heard a thing or two about my campaign? I'd be happy to lissssssss-" her tongue sizzled, before she corrected it with a snap of her metal jaw. "-list out some of my core objectives and go into as much detail you need in order to advise me." In her offer, she tried to be extra careful not to place any suggestion he himself might offer to bankroll his campaign, but counterbalance it with an equal or greater occurrence of the suggestion that he might simply advise her how to seek funding. She wasn't sure how lucky she would get, but if she'd been lucky enough to secure the sit-down with him... maybe she could push her luck just a bit further.

She was polite enough, knew the rules enough and to breach through that starstruck feeling that was on her face that is what he noticed. That is what gave Takeo his teasing smile. Ah, a very direct and intelligent woman, he liked her already! But she wasn't his type, it was maybe slightly stupid to think for that. Maybe old Takumi got into his mind. Maybe he was just alone but for now it did not matter. This conversation was a stroke over his ego and he would fix it, he would enjoy it but he would be serious as well. When they were done shaking hands, he took a step back and scooted in the booth that Deguchi was sitting at. This was really weird and he looked at the booth a bit strangely, he was like a gleeful child when it came to it. Right he was in a different situation, he had to focus but it was so funny to be here and the shaking menu that was offered to him from the waitress, which was even more amusing. There were five good reasons in his mind with why she was nervous and what she was thinking and twenty-nine other options but he liked the first five motives more.
He had noticed her tongue sticking out but again there could be several reasons though he was highly interested, the structure of her jaw, metal, it should be made better. He wanted to point that out but right now he shook his head. "That's alright, can happen to the best of us with a quirk." He grinned and looked highly fascinated about the whole ordeal and he almost opened his mouth to ask about it but he didn't yet. That would be rude, ah he could point it out at another point. He finally looked into the menu now that the waitress returned and looked at it, listened to what Deguchi ordered and decided that the safest option would be than to order the same idea as her, which was a coffee. He offered the menu back to the waitress as dinner or lunch wasn't into his mind in this establishment but no one else had to know that yet.
He waved the introduction of Deguchi-san away and leaned back against the end of the booth to sit as relaxed as possible in the hard plastic ware that was under his ass. Yes, well, busy schedules are boring anyway. He nodded, ah straight to business, made him like her even a bit more. He didn't like the dilly dally around his status or whatever. His interest was again even more sparked about her tongue, her slissing and the hissing sound he thought he heard. Interesting, but again it would have to come to a later point that he would draw her in for a conversation about that. But his mind was already on the wondering spot. "I have heard about it, a word or two but I would always like to hear the words from the person themselves, if you don't mind." The last part was of course extra, after all she just started to say that she was happy to list it again. He liked to hear it here, in the flesh, fresh, so his brain could come up with whatever it thought to be necessary to do so.

Takeo proved to be a man of few words, seemingly because he wanted to hear more of Deguchi's pitch. The blooming politician wasn't sure if that meant he didn't really know much about the campaign and was just being polite, or whether he just wanted her to clarify the details, but she was ready and willing to outline the bullet points. Still, she had to admit... it was one thing to outline them in front of friends, or in front of constituents. It was another thing entirely to do it in front of someone who was so rich he could probably buy and trade the careers of small-time politicans like her like they were trading cards. She couldn't help but feel a knot rising in her laser-gridded, metal-coated throat.
That said, if she couldn't outline her policies after all this practice, she was in trouble, especially since over the last few days when she'd handed them out to UA teachers, UA students, a possum who lived on the UA campus, and countless others outside of UA. "I'm glad to hear you've heard of me and I will be more than happy to run over the key points for you, of course. I'm running on a pro-quirk platform, to put it simply. As you're well aware, we are currently at a crossroads in this great nation's history; I intend to help set us upon the right set of tracks by seeing that the government embraces quirks. This means increasing the government's funding of UA and the hero program: the highest quality teachers, facilities, and equipment must be available to the youths who will bear the responsibility of representing Japan's quirkers on a global stage! My firm belief is that, seeing the efforts of these talented youngsters, as well as the professional heroes in our government's employ, the average citizen will come to accept quirkers as a force of good."
She raised one hand to count off other distinct policies one by one using her fingers. "Beyond UA, we need infrastructure in other schools to handle children with quirks. We need readiness for hospitals to receive and treat quirkers, not to mention to deliver newborns who may manifest quirks early on. We need to cast aside quirkism and welcome quirkers into the police force, firefighters, hospital workers, and all levels of government. We need incentives for tech and pharmaceutical development related to quirkers' issues. The quirkist 'Quirk Tax' must be brought to an end immediately. New funding can be secured by cutting the military fund, which is gradually becoming the largest in Japan's history due to fear and hand-wringing by the current administration over threats from the very quirkerssssss they sssssystematically mistreat!" she finished, finding that when she was given a platform to air all her major platforms, they did indeed become quite a word soup of grievances. For someone who loved the ins and outs of government so much, it sounded as though she increasingly despised the current administration. She ended by rolling her crackling tongue back into her mouth
Finally, Deguchi noticed the waiters carrying the bread and salads that had been intended to begin their meal. None of them had wanted to interrupt while she gave her speech; Deguchi felt a bit silly as they began setting the familiar dishes down around the table. "Ha ha ha, Ol' Iron Jaw really can really get going if ya get her started on politics!" the manager laughed from the kitchen.
Pouting, Deguchi crossed her arms and gave him a glare that meant to stay out of it. "Well, that's the basics. If it sounds like my platform is heavily focused on quirker's rights, that's because it is... I believe these are the most important issues facing Japan today. I'd gladly devote my career to making sure that one goal was achieved!" she explained to him, more focused on her speech than the salad. "The citizens of Japan must not fear quirks! Quirkers are their neighbors, friends, and even children... for our government to fail at this critical juncture would be among the greatest failings in our nation's history."
As the waitress left again, she felt a little quaint asking, "So, how do you feel about it?"

It might sound that he wasn't interested at all. His brain simply could not always remember everything, that was maybe the curse of his quirk. The fact that no one seemed to really know made it easy to look quirkless and he just smiled and watched her think about it. His brain making up five official scenarios with what she might be thinking and wondering about. She needed his help for a campaign and to be honest this was the first time he was approached to help with that and that was exactly a bonus point. The part that she burst the bubble of starstruck helped as well. He liked her, she was interesting. He nodded, pro-quirk platform that was positive. Even if he could play off as quirkless, the government knew better and that was darn bad news. He nodded, "Does this mean that you will invest everything in the school though?"[/b] as much as he liked it, that would not make the citizens agree, others needed money too. He financed some smaller establishments here and there but the whole government needed to open their eyes more to the changes. "Quirks changed a lot and a lot of places need help or money invested but I do agree that it is the hero school that needs a lot, I believe they even considered taking some of the money away from it." He made a clicking sound of disapproval with his tongue and simply watched Deguchi to see her reply, yes, curious. He could not read her entirely that made it even more interesting.
Ah she seemed to have her answer ready and he mouthed an apology to her when she mentioned other schools. Hospitals and he held his own hands and grinned. He kept on nodding, "How much do you need?" He asked her straight when she was done and rolled up her tongue but before Deguchi could answer or maybe she even missed his question as the waitress flaunted half over him and he simply leaned a little more back, if that was even possible in the booth. He smiled at the manager, "We need more people like that, passionate and there to say what needs to be said." He liked it, he would develop as much as they need, discount, anything really, the world needed to accept that they were out there and that the quirks would grow.
Ah she had missed his point, "I asked right before they came to bring the food, how much your campaign needs." He smiled his charming one, a crooked grin and he laughed. "This is what we need, of course, we must not forget that the quirkless will want to have a voice as well but by making things normal and invest in everything, such as the infrastructure of schools and handling quirks better means a safer environment for everyone which would benefit for everyone. If you manage to normalize the idea of quirks, everyone would benefit. The stigma needs to be gone and you seem to be the right person for it."
He took a piece of the bread and popped it in his mouth. "So you need posters, we need appointments with the radio and television, you need a new wardrobe." He pointed at it, and he almost said that she needed a new jaw but that was mostly his personal interest. "Buttons, I like buttons, and stickers, yes. Let's do that too." Maybe banners? What more? Where to start, he had so many ideas.

Deguchi batted back in forth in her head whether she should really go into the in-depth answer of how she planned to use the education budget at a local level to assist UA, or if she ought to give the abridged version. There wasn't much time to think, so she answered impulsively. "I assssss-ure you, there's plenty of funding available for established education and quirk-tailored education if we spend more wisely," she retorted. "It's less funneling 'all the money' and more 'diverting appropriate funding.' The approach right now is simply not correct! The government is treating this as some kind of drip feed experiment that they can take in conservative measures, when the truth is, such a monumentally important project as UA deserves the full resources of the government to prepare these youngsters. They're literally under attack by criminals, for God's sake!"
Just then, Deguchi hoped that Takeo wasn't a religious man; she used the expression pretty liberally, but there was a chance he'd be offended. She sipped her coffee in an attempt to calm her excitement, but it just made her leg twitch faster. If the coffee wasn't already causing her heart to smash against the walls of her chest, his next question nearly made her spit out what was left of the coffee that had just entered down her laser-coated throat. "Numbers?!" she thought to herself, scrambling to pull her notebook and pen back out of her pocket in a rather comical scene, before the conversation turned to the restaraunteers and their opinions of her instead. She wasn't sure if that was a blessing or a curse. She had some ideas of numbers, but she was concerned how Takeo would take her whipping them out in front of a wealthy potential financier like him.
Takeo had his own ideas of how to approach the quirker vs. quirkless issue while still benefiting UA; Deguchi had, at times, considered this approach herself. After all, a rising tide raises all ships; if she was to work toward increased funding for all schools, not just UA, the hero students would reap benefit regardless and outrage would be lessened among those without quirks. It was a pretty sensible option. She only hoped that once she was in a proper office, it would be easier to evaluate the needs of UA.
Now Takeo was moving fast, pointing out her campaign's various needs, which he correctly guessed Deguchi had been fishing for his help paying for. "Ooooh, yes! I have posters, Takeo-san! But radio and television too, yes, those are very important! I have always wanted to get my messsssss-" she murmured, shaking her head as she struggled to get the heat off her tongue. "Message out to the public on such a wide platform, without having to fight for camera time! And buttons and stickers, yes, we should distribute plenty of those! And- wait, wardrobe?" she asked, raising an eyebrow and pulling her lapels outward, as if to inspect her jacket. "W-Well, this whole getup is a little like my brand, don't you think? What were you thinking of changing?" she asked, now holding her tie out in one hand to examine the striped pattern. She'd jump through just about any hoops to secure the funding for that radio and TV time... the whole situation had her so distracted that Takeo was actually outpacing her in the meal, despite her usual habit of speed-eating.

As he thought before, Deguchi was a power player, in the other sense of the word that most people considered. She did not think about power, she thought about how to divide it and how to make it better. He liked the idea of the diverting appropriate funding and he liked how she took a risk to tell him or anyone for that matter. He had no idea if she told more people about it. Takeo liked her, which was saying a lot, he did not always make the right decisions but he liked the honest kind and the kind that seemed to do exactly what they needed to do. Not simply by intelligence, that's how his brain worked though, but a combination of that and mostly the heart. Huh, if only he had one. But he could do this, he could spread his own popularity around and make things better, it would be a rather interesting thing to consider. Schools needed better information of what to do with quirks and they took or planned to take that money away and now they even thought of cutting more of U.A. "Indeed an investigation and thus a funding in such and other education that makes the resourcefulness of the government better is a benefit for us all and the protection of the children should be high up on the to-do-list of the government, unfortunately, the current diet doesn't see that." They needed people that were ready to accept the changes and he wondered shortly as he knew the name sounded familiar if he had ever spoken to her father, it must be the party member right. He had no intention to ask, either she did not want to lean on his name or she would tell him later. He looked at her, all flustered and mumbling and yet excited and he laughed wholeheartly, "Nothing actually, I like the colours a lot, but to show more the professional side, it needs to fit just a little better. Especially if you make a debut on tv. Impression is after all the first thing people see." He brushed his own hair away, yes that's why he loathed his eyepatch when he first got it, until it helped a lot when he flirted with women. He could do what Takumi said he should, he just never brought them home or went any further than buying drinks. He continued eating from his lunch, hm not as bad as he thought it would be and let her wonder about it. "My dear Deguchi-san, it is important to remain yourself, and that's why I don't want to change anything but a bit of a better fitting. Though but that's more my curiousity than your campaign, the building of your jaw, that is super fascinating." Of course the engineer in him had to talk and he grinned, "But maybe that's an interesting topic for another time. I thought you might have asked me for financing and I see that I was right." yes the other three scenarios in his head did not work out well when he went into further detail, "and I am very well with joining your party. It seems you know exactly how to think, with heart and head and that is the people we need in a society that is splitting apart because people only think about what they know and not about how they feel." Which had happened more in history but Takeo was sure that helping Deguchi, would maybe bring a step in the direction that he would like to see and participate in. So that were all the more reasons to start this as well. Takeo Hoshizuki was ready to make a statement in politics. Playing it to his favour, might bring better deals for his future as well.

Deguchi's relationship with the diet had been a complicated matter, ever since she'd announced her intention to enter politics. That her father had supported her out of the hole, from street thuggery and hospital bills back to a functioning member of society, was no secret. The truth was that her father had wanted to support her fully in her rise... not because she shared his ideals, but because she was his beloved daughter who'd finally turned her life around. Unfortunately, he knew that they had to maintain an almost cold distance in the political realm. The two had to remain detached and do things for themselves, for the sake of the integrity of her message. There may even come a day that their messages no longer aligned; perhaps he was preparing them both for that eventuality.
Takeo sensed a bit of that; when he mentioned the blindness of the current diet, however, Deguchi nodded. After all, she only wanted to reach the diet and help guide it because she wasn't satisfied with the way Japan's politics were currently playing out. If she was happy with them, there'd have been no reason to begin her quest. "Protecting children should be a matter of basic human decency. To think that they could allow policies that neglect that," she sighed. "It's hard to decide sometimes if it's better to follow my emotions and give emotional arguments, or if it's better to try to stick just to logic. Hmmm..."
Regarding her outfit, she smiled awkwardly, releasing her death grip on the lapels of her coat. "Oooh, that's a good point... I could use a couple of tailored suits," she laughed, thinking about how long she'd been putting that off. Wouldn't that have been the logical first place to start? Her sense of aesthetics had always been a little... off.
Deguchi couldn't help but feel her heart jump slightly when referred to as "dear," but she tried to shake it out of her head as quickly as she could. "Ah, the jaw... yes... with prosthesis so advanssssss-" she murmured, grumbling as she shook her tongue, then rolled it in, "advanced nowadays, you'd think I could find something more attractive, right? But when I was younger and just getting this picked out at the hospital, I was er, quite a 'wild youth'. I was still thinking about picking out something that looked 'wild.' Ke he he..." she chuckled, remembering back to the time just before she'd made the decision to give up her gang life. Perhaps this jaw was something like a momento, and that's why she'd never undergone further surgery to swap it out. Or perhaps she wasn't confident she'd manage to get something new that fit her quirk as well. Either way, it was easily maintained and repaired, but the issue that it made her look like some bad guy from a spy flick remained.
At any rate, the best possible future had been realized, and Deguchi had gotten a verbal agreement not only for Takeo to help finance her outreach, but also, to join the Party of All People himself. She pinched her cheek discretely to make sure she wasn't dreaming... but only hurt her fingers, seeing as her cheek was made of metal. "That's wonderful! I hope to perform to your expectations," she thanked him, clasping both hands together and performing a bow that wasn't quite suited for the sitting position. "Oooh, I will send you some literature! There's much we'll need to catch you up on! I want to be very clear, I see you as a valuable ally, not just a financier! Ooooh, kuehehehe, just tell me if I'm being overbearing!" That seemed like it'd be a lesson she'd have to learn pretty fast. Hopefully, her poker face was a little better than this in other situations.
The manager came out, seeing the good mood at the table, and handed each of them a plate of cherry pie. Smiling, Deguchi raised one finger and dug for her wallet. "To celebrate, allow me! I'll pay for the pie and the meal, don't you worry. Go ahead and dig in; you'll see why they decided to name this place the Cherry Pie Diner," she chuckled menacingly, delivering a perfectly warm and innocent line as if she'd just made some kind of evil speech.

"Why not both?" The man asked when they continued to talk, he might not be the best in regards to politics. Most of the things came on an easy breeze towards him. Surely it had consequences, he lost his father, he lost his eye. But he was still a genius. "I mean you are right, protecting children should be the first thing on the list, which only would explain that giving emotional arguments can be something that the public understands instead of rhyme and reason. Sometimes people do not want to hear why for example economic trades go over the spending money on hospitals, elderly care and education because it makes no sense to them." He wanted someone more honest, it is what the public needed, it was refreshing, it would not maybe get far but on the other hand, it might reach a lot, there was a statistic chance of about 22.8% that it would work, which did not sound like a lot because the highest percentage was that people thought Deguchi-san would be the same like everyone else, about 43.2% but that meant that the scattering 37% was up in the air to see where it went and that was a hell of a good thing when it would go with the 22.8% that thought she would do right, yea he liked the changes. He snickered only lightly when she said it was a good point and he only made the move with his eyebrows, pointing out he was right. Yes, he knew very well what he was doing. It would just be a point to later, so time to discuss the rest, or well not related to her duty of politics but her jaw was so fascinating. But he was glad he got her to talk and he shook his head, oh my, maybe he had made a bad impression about it. But he first let her talk. "Ah, my that is a story. I really find it fascinating how it works, it seems to work rather fine, no issues for y- I have to stop myself, the engineer and mechanic in me are talking. But it gives you something, something people will not forget and it is up to you to present it as something positive." Her enthusiasm made him smile as well, "Yes, nice, send me loads. I can read quite fast if I say so myself." And during boring other things, it would be nice to read. "I like your enthusiasm, you should keep it that way, so not overbearing at all, I am glad to be an alley." He smiled, this was nice, it gave him something meaningful to do. He should not think of the opposite side of this, not at all, no he was going to focus on himself. He shook his head smiling when the manager brought pie, not denying Deguchi to pay, it was the politeness to let her do so and he thanked the man for the pie and tried, it was definitely not the worst he had, it might even be in his top three. "Then I can say this was a rather fruitful meeting." He said with a wink.

"Very true, very true," Deguchi admitted. Truth be told, she'd seen the glazed-over eyes of many an attendant at her political rallies, struggling to understand her as she explained the differences in capital expenditures and taxes necessarily paid by quirked individuals. Charts and graphs could only do so much. Protection of children was a societal norm that not only dated back to the origins of man, but even to other species.
Still, it was hard for anyone to put themselves into another's shoes. When the people pictured children, they pictured their own children, or, depending on their age, their own childhood. In those childhoods, most of them had never had to consult a confused doctor about what diet they could subsist on without reducing it to ash on the way down her throat. To use other examples, they'd never had to take jokes about which of their parents had made it with an animal to give them bird wings, or avoid half the rides at an amusement park because their necks were too long, their heads too big, their bodies too wide, etc. Still, it was easier for them to understand that plight than how a quirked adult might depend on welfare due to their day-to-day expenses.
"Ke he he... I'll put you on our mailing list, then," she promised/threatened, wagging her spoon at him playfully before digging into another scoop. She buried herself deeper into the pie and coffee as he fixed her with another wink. If she tried to turn this relationship from financier/politician to something more, she really would be asking the genie to grant her unlimited wishes. "Now, if he just so happens to be taken in my maverick charm and youthful energy, over a steady series of engagements, then that would hardly be a flight of fancy on my part. Just a storybook bow on my 'Million-Dollar Woman' story," she thought to herself, her eyes curving into vaguely happy, vaguely suspicious crescents as she sipped her coffee and fantasized to herself.
Finally, she'd pick up the tab and leave a generous tip. If the diner had played any part in her landing this deal, she figured the waitress deserved a cut, after all. "Well, Takeo-san! Thank you again a lovely meeting, brilliant company, and this very equitable arrangement you've offered! You'll get some reading material soon enough- here's an All-People's pamphlet to get you started- and we can talk next steps very shortly!" she finished, extending her hand to shake as long and fervently as she'd let him. She'd hold the door, walk him out to the car, and whatever other obsequiousness he'd allow before the two parted.
