You don't need a dream or even a tomorrow Just live
The stars covered the dark sky, but, at the time, Ryuusei Igarashi had no idea that one of them had shot down throught the clouds to land on the streets of Tokyo. He was at a small place that served the best ramen in the city - at least in his opinion. The first time he had been there was with Yasu, his older sister. It seemed like it was a life time ago. Perhaps, in some way, it was: it felt like a distant dream that was becoming more and more faded; like a ghost that was never really there, one that would never return. Ryuusei was quick to eat and left the money above the table. They could keep the change. Away from the smoke and smell of the japanese cuisine, he walked away, his pace constant and slow, yet determined. He knew exactly where he was going. His sneakers made no sound, but the chained earing on his left ear was enough to signaling his presence everytime that the hot breeze blew stronger. Occasionally, his oversized white t-shirt would also dangle with the wind, just like his blonde hair. Since it was a summer night, he was also wearing shorts, black in colour just like his shoes. As he walked, some people stared at him. It had become something common since he got the tattoos on his left arm and a little below his neck. Didn't matter: that way everyone would keep their distance, for sure. He looked at his cellphone while keeping his pace. The app open was the one that showed the map of the city and highlighted was the route he had to take. A possible hideout of future use. Ryuu already knew the spot he would use as his main secret hub, but having known bases across the city could be precious in times of emergency. The seventeen year old stopped his feet. He was in the main street, but now it was the time to go into the darkest alleys of the town, the ones where usually there nothing besides stray animals and people forgotten by society. By experience, Ryuu also knew it was where criminals and villains could also be found. It should be this way, he spoke to himself before turning into the alleyway. And, in just one or two steps, Ryuusei Igarashi was out of sight. But make no mistake: a spy always knows when there's something - or someone - behind him... even if it doesn't look like it. In another venue in the same district not too close but also not too far, Karen was also having a little blast from the past. With how busy things were since the school year started she had not gotten any opportunities to catch up with her middle school friends from her former school. They too were caught up in their own high school activities so it was hard to match schedules. But with the stars aligning this evening they finally managed to push through with a karaoke night just like old times. This was the crowd that knew her beyond being just the student council president. Which meant that tonight's Karen was a lot more casual than usual, sporting an outfit quite unlike her typical more semi-formal fare. She was clad in a loose light teal top, light gray shorts, and black boots. For once she looked like your everyday stylish high school age student on a fun night out. The get together ran a little later than Karen expected but thankfully she was pretty much free for the rest of the evening. She had a lot of fun chatting with nostalgic faces and singing her heart out. Hopefully they could do it again with more frequency. Perhaps she could even bring some UA friends along. On her way to the nearest train station to head back to Musutafu, she stopped by a certain vending machine to get a cool drink. She was glad she dressed lightly as even summer nights weren't too cool. While taking a sip from the can of lemon soda that she purchased, she noticed a familiar face walking on the other side of the street. She had to do a double take though as this wasn't someone whom she knew personally but recognized enough to at least attach a name to them. If she was not mistaken this was Ryuusei, the upperclassman who performed with Rowan during that music night some time ago. Karen remembered enjoying their classical performance a lot and so for now she mostly knew him as the piano guy. It looked as though he might have been out having a fun evening too. Since she had only ever seen him in more formal wear, his casual look stood out to her. The goody two shoes in her would mentally critique his having tattoos as she was certain he wasn't aged twenty. But she was positive that this was indeed that same Ryuusei so she found it kind of unusual that a UA student was walking around openly displaying something that might get him into trouble. Curiosity got the better of Karen and so as soon as the crosswalk signal turned green, she decided discreetly hop on over to the other side to see where the 'delinquent' upperclassman was heading this evening. She would do her best to be as natural as possible, walking in the same direction from a good twenty to thirty paces behind. Soda in one hand and her phone out on her other hand, she tried to give off the impression of someone who was mostly distracted but paid just enough attention to not bump into anyone else on the street. But before they could get too far, Ryuusei suddenly made a turn at an alleyway just up ahead. Now Karen wasn't from around this neighborhood so pulling up a map app, she quickly tried to check what was in that direction before she arrived in from of the alleyway herself. No luck in figuring out where he was going from that however. She assumed he was taking a shortcut to somewhere further away. Eyes still mostly on her phone, she made a turn at the alleyway herself only to find that barely a few steps in and she had completely lost sight of Ryuusei. Not her most successful stalking attempt for sure.

You don't need a dream or even a tomorrow Just live
It was just a hunch, but it seemed like Ryuusei's senses were on point. Maybe Darren refering to him as a dumpster cat had more thought into it it that it could appear at first sight... or listen, in this case. Make no mistake: the boy had no magical powers capable of detecting if anyone was following him (although such ability would be extremely nice... a man can dream) nor did he have a third eye on the back of his head, hidden underneath his medium-long sized dyed hair. All of this belonged either to the realm of fiction or to the realm of Quirks that he did not possess. What Ryuusei had was another thing, perhaps the most valuable thing to have in this day and age: experience. Truth be told, Ryuusei Igarashi was only seventeen. However, the things he had seen - and done - were experiences that many would never have. Herr Kunshu taught him to act quick, Semper Fi made him understand that he was his own worst enemy, the Sports Festival revealed his leadership and decision making skills. Despite all of this, right there and then, Ryuu could only think of a very specific phrase Tanaka - that damn snake who died on the boy's arms - told him at the military camp: "No matter what you do always watch your back"From what happened days after such words were spoken, Ryuu learnt such fact in the hardest of ways - but he learned. One should always be on the look out, for in the darkness even your own shadow leaves you. This was the reason as to why Ryuusei activated his Quirk and used God's Accomplice after turning into that alleyway. Just to make sure. Just to play safe. Just to know that not even his own dark reflection would materialize to stab him in the back. It didn't take long for their eyes to meet, even if she wasn't aware of it. With the same surprise that the girl looked at the empty closed-off street, an invisible Ryuusei looked at her. You have to be kidding me, he could only think to himself. Did someone really follow him? Or was it just a coincidence? No, it couldn't be... Why would she turn into that street, especially all by herself, especially at that very moment? Why would she have the wide eyes of someone that was expecting to see someone if she wasn't following him? Too many questions, one plausible answer: she was, indeed, there for him. But the way she looked... Her faultless skin, her curved figure, her innocent eyes; the casual clothing, the lack of visible weapons, the aura of a teenager. How could that be the person that was following him? And, maybe a better question, why would she be following him? It was impossible that someone knew of his upcoming decision... Could it be a ghost from the past coming to haunt him? The ghost from Kabukicho or one of the many ghosts from Semper Fi? Keep it together, he forced himself to remember. Overthinking breaks concentration. A break of concentration leads to breathing. Breathing nullifies God's Alibi. Damn it, he had to make choice. He had to make it quick. Allowing her to give up and go away or approching her? That was the dilemma. The first one gave space for unanswered questions, the second one permited a resolution. Decision made. She wasn't very far away, so the steps he had to make were few. Approaching in silence and taking advantage of the sounds of the night, he reached the girls back, his knife already in his left-hand. Hopefully taking advantage of the girl's lack of aware about what was happening, Ryuusei reached for her right wrist with his free right hand, trying to grab that part of the girl's body without much force, yet enough to make a statement that he wasn't letting her go easily. At the same time he'd lightly press the tip of his knife against the middle of her back, only enough for her to feel that he was holding a weapon against her. Starting to breathe, he was now visible to the world. He leaned into her, his lips near her left ear. This would be the first time she would listen to his cold voice. Who are you and why are you following me?To anyone crossing the main street that looked into the alleyway with the corner of their eyes, it would probably look like Ryuusei and the girl were a couple, the boyfriend grabbing his girlfriend from behind in order to whisper something in her ear or kiss her on the cheek. This was far from the true. Someone entered the cat's territory and he wasn't shy about protecting it, even if it meant showing his fangs. Of course, not all animals that venture to these parts mean harm. Sometimes, the cat is just wrong. But what can he do? Instincts are just that: instinctics, intuitive and primal, but not always right. Notes: This thread will be fuuuuuuuuun!Words: 842.Tags: Karen Hoshizora

Karen stared at the empty alleyway then back at her phone and then back at the alleyway again. Sure the guy had twenty pace head start from her but it was almost like magic how he was suddenly just gone. According to the map app there weren't any side alleys close by that he could have ducked into straight away after making that turn. So did he enter one of the surrounding buildings then? She didn't spot anything that looked like an entrance close by either. Of course it was a bit dark there so she could easily be mistaken. Her pondering however would be short-lived. Without warning someone had grabbed her wrist causing her to drop her soda can, its contents spilling on the ground though thankfully away from her boots. She recognized the motions as an attempt to restrain her which she normally would have tried to counter somehow. However that hard pointy feeling against her back would instantly cause her to rethink her otherwise reflexive action. Whoever this was was very good and knew what they were doing. She was fairly certain that she would get stabbed fatally if she tried anything carelessly. Unfortunately she couldn't even rely on her quirk here as the darkness made it glaringly obvious if would activate it. Her first thought after being caught in a checkmate was that this was a much more dangerous neighborhood than she expected. It totally caught her off guard that someone would even try to hold her up like that and only proved her lack of experience and vigilance. Her ruse to appear careless and distracted must have gotten the attention of some unsavory types. And unfortunately for her they were actually competent. As he leaned closer to whisper his demands however, Karen's initial assumptions were promptly shattered. Who was she and why was she following him? Any way you slice it, that was a weird thing for a criminal and mugger to say to their victim. But now was not the time to get confused and panic. She gave it a quick thought and putting two and two together the words said finally made sense. This guy thought that she was following him, and she was indeed following someone just moments ago. Some way somehow, Ryuusei was suddenly behind her even though neither what was in her field of vision nor what was on the map app suggested there was any way of getting around behind her without coming out the same way. But Karen saw no one the entire time. Something strange was going on here. But setting that aside, why was a UA student's first response at someone following them putting a knife against their back? She was utterly bewildered. "Ryuusei-san from UA? I'm a fan of your piano playing and just happened to see you making a turn around here. Sorry if I got the wrong guy."Perhaps the most cliche thing ever was answering a question with a question. But what came to Karen's mind after processing all this was the possibility that she actually made a mistake about her target's identity. And so she wanted to confirm it. If she was wrong then she would know soon enough and she would have to think about her next move. If she was right then this situation was exactly as weird as she initially evaluated it. Why in the world was a UA student accosting people at knifepoint??? "You probably don't know me and I'd love to give you a more proper introduction. But this is a rather uncomfortable position that I would love to get out of first if possible."

You don't need a dream or even a tomorrow Just live
The mouse had been trapped, but was there any reason for its capture? It was clear that it had been a winning move, the victory made obvious as soon as the sound of the soda can clashing against the dirty floor of the alleyway was heard. Whoever this girl was, she understood the situation she was in: running away would be difficult, fighting back would be possibly too dangerous. She was a defenseless lamb and the predator just needed to decide if he wanted to eat. She didn't take too long to respond. That was good: if the reply came long after, it would've most likely been a made-up lie. However, that didn't matter now. As Ryuusei heard her words, the weight of his mistake came crashing down on his shoulders. What the... his own voice could be heard inside his head. She knew his name. She knew he was from Yuuei. She knew he played the piano. If she knew all that... was she from the school too? Or, worse, had she been following for weeks now? If so, was she doing it from her own will? Was she hired by someone? Did she want to ki- But her voice...She did not have a voice of a killer. Nor the voice of someone who knows killers. That's what Ryuusei thought, for what that is worth. And, above everything else, Ryuusei always trusted his own judgement. Something very weird was happening. She continued to talk, appealing to her release. Still without moving an inch, Ryuusei looked her down only with his eyes. His brain was figuring what the next step would be. She did not attack me straight away and tried to get out of this situation through words and not action, so she either doesn't want to fight or isn't sure she can win... Physically I'm clearly stronger, so the only way she should be able to put up a fight is if she has a Quirk... Damn it... Let's roll with it.He looked to the side of her face again and let out a small breath, one of someone that his releasing tension from his own body. Yeah, that's me, he told to her ear once more. He then immediately let go of her wrist and retreated his knife before giving her a push on the back. It was soft and with care, making it obvious that the intent was stricly letting the girl know that she was now free to move according to her own will. Ryuu, however, remained in the same place, his back turned against the main street. Well... another breath released, the one louder than the other. He crouched down, knees bent and arms supported on his tighs. Knife still in hand, the boy would wait until the assumed follower was facing him before continuing to talk. Your position is now comfortable, so I'm assuming you can give me that introduction. He was now thinking that the chances of this stalker wanting to harm him were low, but that did not mean she was off the hook: Ryuusei still wanted to make sure he knew who this girl was and where did she know his name from. Information is valuable and, right now, the balance was only shifted towards one of the sides. The thought of her being from the school did not even cross his head: a man with things to hide often has a foggy mind... Notes: A scared cat is scary!Words: 576.Tags: Karen Hoshizora

It seemed in the end she had been right all along. That whisper of confirming his identity followed immediately by her release brought a bit of relief on Karen's part as she honestly did not want to have to do anything drastic here. Up until this encounter she had been having a wonderful evening so you could imagine how she felt about the mood change, that she was suddenly in danger of getting hurt. Her thoughts lingered on her initial reaction of being surprised that a UA student would hold a knife against someone, but then she didn't really know anything about Ryuusei. She had been given the fair chance to explain herself here so she might as well offer him the same courtesy. Appearing to momentarily lament her spilled drink, she turned around to face him, her expression on the neutral side but leaning to a slight frown. "First of all I'm kind of disappointed you would treat an innocent girl so roughly Ryuusei-san. I really loved your performance in the Fourth Corner with Rowan-senpai too. But I didn't think you were like this in person."She would say in a slightly upset tone. As far as she was concerned she had the right to be. She had not done anything 'wrong' as of yet. "I'm Karen Hoshizora from class 1-A. Since you were with Rowan-senpai, I suppose you're a senpai too?"This might have been the first time that she had an unfavorable first, or well second impression of an upperclassman. It just goes to show that anyone could dress up nice and look cool in a suit but be totally different normally. Her eyes momentarily glanced at his tattoos again before resuming looking him in the face. It was hard to see in dark especially with his back against the brighter main street so she couldn't quite make out his expression. Obviously he wasn't too glad to see her as she had picked up on the coldness and maybe slight paranoia in his voice. Was he expecting someone else to be following him? Not that it was an excuse to start pointing knives at people. Really things could have gone horribly wrong if the encounter played out just a little bit differently. Karen knew that she was lucky in a way. But she still had to prepare for the worst. He may have let her go for now, but with how he effortlessly got behind her and restrained in that position earlier she knew that she was still far from safe.

You don't need a dream or even a tomorrow Just live
She turned around, her blood coloured eyes looking at him, probably trying, in confusion, to figure out what the hell was Ryuusei thinking. She also wasn't shy about it: a slight scowl was visible on her face and her own vspeech reflected this through the words that were chosen. But who could blame her? If she was indeed innocent, the reality would be that she just had a knife pointed against her back. He listened to her words with full attention and without interrupting - such thing was important, so had he learnt. She doubled down on the piano point, but this time also pointed out Rowan's name. Great, was she really a... Yeah, she was: another Yuuei student and, by her own words, a first year from Class A, Ryuu's own class. You don't get to be disappointed at someone you don't know... Ryuusei said in a low voice to himself in order for the girl that identified herself as Karen not to hear. A long sigh followed those words while Ryuusei proceeded to put his knife back where it belonged, both his hands being now free. He lowered his head a little bit and elevated both his hands to his own face, almost as he was cleaning it with water. I'm getting a little paranoid, this isn't good, he thought to himself with a hidden smile, a smile of someone who, in part, pities is own self. He was quick to stop this motion and bring his arms back to the support of his own tighs. Still crouching, he spoke in response to the question that Karen had finished with. Yeah, I'm from 2-A. Me and Rowan are classmates, he spoke, his voice still seemingly cold purely because that was his natural tone. And I'm sorry about that, the "that" was pretty self-explanatory. As he said the above, Ryuusei got up on his feet. Using his hands to quickly swipe his clothing, the boy continued to speak. I'm a known Quirker and Yuuei student due to both the articles that came out after Semper Fi and the Rescue Event of the Sports Festival being televised, so walking alone around Tokyo during the night isn't the most safe thing for me to do. So, you know, if I sense someone following me I assume that it is some Anti-Quirker trying to jump me or frame me for something, that's how society is... I agree that pulling the knife so fast might be a little much though, he finished give a short smile. The best lies are the ones that use the truth, so that was what Ryuusei resorted to. It was factual that the most aware citizens could know him due to the situations he mentione to Karend and it was indeed true that there still was a real stigma against Quirkers, but that wasn't the reason why Ryuusei was so alarmed at the chance of having someone follow him. The reason for that was entirely different, but... but Karen did not need to know that. Hoping that his explanation would stick, he began walking towards Karen while still speaking. Let's start this over...Stopping only around five feet in front of the girl, Ryuusei would present himself while giving a small bow - afterall, he still couldn't run away from his roots. My name is Igarashi Ryuusei, it's nice to meet you, Karen-san.And it was while he bowed that he noticed the drink on the floor. Right, that's what happens when you use your force to grab the wrist of someone holding an object. Probably needed to do something about that. When his back was, once again, straight, Ryuu would talk one more time. Let me buy you another one - he pointed at the can - It's the least I can do.Of course that, even after his plausible explanation, he didn't mention anything about as to why he was going into that alleyway. He hoped that Karen would just not think about that part... and that she believed his justification for almost attacking her. Notes: Ryuu, master of excuses!Words: 679.Tags: Karen Hoshizora

Still on guard, Karen would listen as Ryuusei filled in a few blanks from the information that she was lacking about him. He was a second year student as she had correctly assumed and was actually from 2-A as well, same as Rowan. He apologized for the startling encounter though in her opinion he could have done better in portraying his sincerity. It was hard to grasp a feeling of warmth from the tone of his voice and it made her think that there was still a lot of distrust and wariness on his part with regards to her presence. Getting up, he would go on to explain himself further and Karen would proceed to hear the most preposterous excuses she had ever heard. From her point of view, either he was making all of it up or he had the most warped and pessimistic worldview of any UA student that she had ever met. It was baffling to the point that she was willing to accept that a guy like him was certainly realistically prone to pointing a knife at someone whom he thought was following him. Just what kind of life did he live that he has such an unfortunate perception of what society was like today? "It's not something to smile about Ryuusei-san."Somewhere at the back of Karen's head her subconscious refused to address such a person as senpai even though she never had such an issue before. It was less of being mad at the person and more at his circumstances, and she wasn't going to take what he said at face value just yet. She wasn't really convinced, mostly because she held almost an entirely opposite belief, that today's society was closer more than ever to be one where quirkers and non-quirkers lived and cooperated without prejudice. Well that might be a bit too positive. But with the advent of pro heroes and hero schools, it was clear that society had taken huge leaps in accepting quirks as part of the norm. It's not as though she had not heard of any recent cases of misdeeds born of anti-quirk sentiments. But Ryuusei was suggesting that by virtue of being a UA student, they were now several times more prone to just being randomly attacked on the street. She had only been a student for a couple of months but she definitely didn't feel anything has changed. And this was coming from a girl whose family would be known for pro-quirker views, being behind one of the most successful businesses in Tokyo that catered specifically to quirkers. When he offered to buy her a drink, Karen felt that he was trying to redirect attention elsewhere. Again she couldn't really pick up on any sincerity. Perhaps if he had a choice he would have preferred that they both just walked away from each other at this point. She was torn herself between not really wanting to get involved in anything perilous and at the same time being concerned that a student was doing dangerous things out of a misguided sense of paranoia. She would need to have a word with the counselor once she got back to campus. But first, Ryuusei's attempt at reconciliation. "To be honest after all this I'm not really that thirsty anymore. I'm just shocked I guess that someone attending UA would have so little faith in society. We all have different reasons for wanting to become heroes, but I figured attending hero school meant that you at least believed in the hero system."
She sighed. "Fine, you can buy me a drink. I don't know why you're walking around here at night if you don't feel it's safe, but someone has to watch you in case you try pointing a knife at someone else again."

You don't need a dream or even a tomorrow Just live
Oh no. Not only was she a Yuuei student, but she was also one of the "i'm all serious and self-righteous" types... It could've been someone like Darren or Yumi or Elise, but no - it had to be someone like this Karen girl. Bad luck really doesn't come alone. Well, you gotta roll with the punches, no need to overthink more than what had already gotten him into this situation in the first place. Hearing her next reply, Ryuusei would reply before she could sigh and continue. The most important responsibility of every citizen must be to question authority - he paraphrased the famous ocidental quote - Just because I belong to a certain system it doesn't mean that I should turn a blind eye to what's wrong, whether that's coming from the inside, the outside or, well... Even from myself, he finished. He didn't really have much problems saying those words to the newly met schoolmate - anyone who knew the boy understood exactly what his stance was regarding the entire Hero System and Quirckers vs Non-Quirkers issue. Not only that, anyone with enough knowledge would understand why he would carry a knife and threaten people who might be following him: the last two times he went into an alleyway he was beaten up by two thugs and, on the other one, he had a fight with Nick Cross that cost him months of his life. But of course Karen didn't know that... but she also didn't even put the possibility in place. Again: the "self-righteous" type. They see the world in black and white and anything or anyone that doesn't fit their mold of the world must be looked as an outsider. Reasons or motivations for actions don't matter: you're either a hero or a villain. Yeah, he really hated that. Whatever. At least his plans were still hidden - rather look like an asshole than revealing his intentions of turning vigilante. As she accepted his proposal, he clap both his hands together. Good! - he said while still in front of her, refusing to say anything about why he was there - I'm pretty sure that I don't need a bodyguard, but if that's your motivation I'll accept it. I know a place nearby. He placed his hands on the pockets of his shorts and began walking out of the alley into the mainstreet, expecting that the smaller girl would walk alongside him. He could've simply chose to walk away and leave it at that, but Ryuusei couldn't resist at continuing the interaction: it was just like a videogame, balancing the risk of losing with the reward of figuring the mechanics of a new character. Once they were walking up the street, Ryuusei would start conversation. I'll take the difficult task of getting the tradition out of the way... - he introduced the topic, mocking the fact that everyone did this same exact question while aknowledging that now he himself was asking it - Why did you join Yuuei? By your words in the alley you seem to think that the current system is working pretty well, so.... You're becoming an Hero just be "one more" or is there anything else? Just like always, pretty straight to the point. Yoru would be proud... Ryuu thought so, at least. Notes: The thread rises from the dead!Words: 552.Tags: Karen Hoshizora

Karen didn't really understand what this had to do with questioning authority or turning a blind eye with what's wrong with the system. A UA student was walking around pulling out a knife on people he was remotely suspicious of. That was way too excessive to justify as "questioning" the rules, if this was his attempt at justifying it. What exactly was wrong with the system that he claims most people are turning a blind eye to but not him? It's not like she didn't understand sentiments about fixing the shortcomings of society, but this one's ideals were bordering on the radical side if she had to guess. It might even be worse than what she was thinking as people like this tend to try and hide the true extent of their feelings on the matter when speaking with strangers. She sighed. She wasn't a psychology expert. The only reason she even had such presumptions was because she had encountered similar stories in the past. Being strong supporters of quirkers in society her family was more than familiar anti-quirker views and had come into direct conflict with them a few times. Raising the company from nothing was no easy feat. Her parents were heroes in their own right. But no she wasn't the weird one here. She was probably more sensible than most people. There was something very wrong with his way of thinking. But for now she couldn't quite pin it exactly with words. "You make it sound like you're fighting a war by yourself while everyone else is none the wiser. Honestly between the two of us, I'm probably more in 'danger' of being caught up in some anti-quirker acts of terror by virtue of my family alone."And yet she was the more optimistic one. She followed him out of the alley and into the main street, choosing walk beside but slightly lagging behind him as she was expecting him to lead the way. When he asked his question however, she couldn't help but feel that it sounded condescending, whether he used that tone or not.
