Yumi, since her failings at the school sports festival and the limitations she felt at the rescue class hosted by the nurse Nimue, had been looking into more and more ways to use her electricity outside of an offensive medium. Against Darren she could only come close to a win but even then she was knocked out of the tournament in the first round. Everyone kept telling her it wasstill impressive but it just didn't...click. It didn't register. And besides, she never wanted to be a combat hero. She grew more and more at peace with it, realizing it was probably just the best way to utilize her quirk to do good, but she wanted to expand herself, do more, go beyond being a one trick pony...
As such, she'd been up late the past few nights voice chatting with her pen Pal Valda. A girl so smart she designed the suit that Yumi wore to regulate the output of her powers. Together they'd been going through lots of theoretical uses of electricity in non offensive methods and Yumi had been testing them herself over and over. A lot of the ideas failed but one was looking more promising the more she tried, but even then it seemed like she had a long way to go. She could use the magnetic forces of electricity to create a repulsive shell about herself, and even fly, but she needed to see if she could take it a step further. If she output it just right, she and Valda theorized she could lift other objects, catching an arcing stream of electricity about them and hoisting them into the air. It wouldn't be easy, but if she just focused....!
Right now was one of her tests, standing in the indoor training field, having not wanted to catch too much attention while she was trying to focus, she grit her teeth and continued to output her electrical energy. A few items of random sports equipment had been littered around her, and with the arcing streams pulsing away from her body, the equipment shifted and nudged, just barely budging hear and there, clearly affected without being damaged, but Yumi couldn't quite get it right to latch onto what was around her.
"Come oooon...!"
Groaning loudly as she could almost feel the blood pulsing through her forehead as she strained herself, she pushed just a little harder. She couldn't feel the weight of anything being lifted like this but even with her eyes tight shut she could almost...register it. Something latched on and a few pieces of gear just slowly started to lift off the ground around her, her electrical currents arcing wildly in all directions around her...!
But it couldn't last. About 3 feet off the floor everything around her dropped as Yumi lost control of her quirk, a much more dangerous blast of electrical energy shot in all directions around her and she collapsed onto her ass, catching her breath with harsh pants...even slamming down a fist to her side in frustration...!
If she could manage this...lifting things without the use of her hands, without a dangerous output...she might be finally useful outside of just fighting!

It wasn’t that Shouko intended to spy! It wasn’t her fault the door had been left open! Well, unlocked, opened, same thing. The point was, if you didn’t want to be seen, you shouldn’t be so easy to walk in on! And what a sight it was, the brunette’s eyes growing wide as she recognized the person standing in the middle of the room! She would recognize that body anywhere! After all, her match with Darren was easily one of Shouko’s favorites from the entire tournament! It was only a shame that it had occurred so early. After all, from what the self-proclaimed battle analyst could tell, Yumi easily matched up to any of the competitors! In fact, Darren was likely one of the few in the tournament who could defeat her. But then, luck was a skill too!
In any case, although it would sound weird to those who knew Shouko for her constant invitations to duel, the girl always was the type to prefer watching to doing! So while she had originally come to the training grounds to hone the movements of her self-created martial style, this obviously would take priority! It wasn’t every day she had a chance to look in on one of her upperclassmen training! Especially not one which she idolized as heavily as Tasukai Yumi! And so, not looking suspicious at all, the girl would crack open the door and peer inside- All the while berating herself for not bringing a camera! What a waste of prime footage!
Inside, it was pretty immediately obvious what the redhead was working on. Arcs of electricity leapt from her body to the equipment scattered around her, but not in the damaging way Shouko recalled her bolts being during the sports festival. This was a more subtle electricity, which was pushing the objects around her away without damaging them! Was this- Was she training a new technique!? So cool! Amazing! It had been so totally worth checking all of the closed training room doors to see if anyone was inside! The door creaked ever so slightly as Shouko leaned in for a better look.
As objects began to rise, Shouko’s excitement rose to a fevered pitch, but she managed to keep her exclamations internal. Wow! Amazing! This wasn’t anything like what she had shown during the festival! Was she using her electricity to create electromagnetic fields? Putting the kinesis into electrokinesis! If she mastered this technique, anyone using metal weapons could be disarmed in a flash! Metal belt buckles? Enjoy fighting while holding your pants up! Armor? More like a straightjacket! So versatile! So strong! As expected of Yumi-senpai! Hairs raised on the girl’s neck from the lingering static in the air, but she paid that no mind.
What happened next was purely an unfortunate coincidence. The brunette girl leaned forward just a teeeeeeny bit more, just at the same time as Yumi lost control and an electromagnetic blast shot in every direction. While the blast had lost most of it’s power by the time it reached the door, it was more than enough to throw the eavesdropper off balance. Her own weight would push the door the rest of the way open as she tumbled inside. After a comical roll inside, the girl would end up in an even more comical state, bent over backward with her torso on the ground, and her legs dangling over her head. Blinking, the girl could only lightheartedly chuckle- “Ehehehe, busted…”

Still realing a bit from her own failure in trying to master this new technique, Yumi was mildly rubbing at her forehead, a light groan from the exertion in the back of her throat, and her tired eyes and ringing ears not catching the initial tumble of the girl by the door. Afterall she was till hearing some of the metal gym equipment reverberating from hitting the ground, it was hard to hear anything with the ringing of metal bars right next to her ear. Of course, even oblivious Yumi could notice a girl laying flat on her front like that eventually, and rather than see the peeping tom as…well, a more innocent version of that same label, Yumi worried she’d just accidentally caught someone passing through the room in her little accident.
“O-oh god I’m so sorry! Are you alright?!” Yumi rushed up to her feet, getting 3 steps and rapidly stopping herself. Her electricity generation was based off of unique muscle fibres laced in with her normal ones, so the constant strain she’d put herself under had essentially been like giving herself the ‘dead’ status in all four limbs, her whole sense of balance off and her legs feeling like Jelly to boot. There was a sense of urgency even as she caught her balance though, and once she was used to the sensation she continued to rush towards the girl at the door, though definitely a little more cautiously now.
As she approached her, she’d offer her a hand up as she got close, holding her hand firmly through the fabric of her suit, which directly into fingerless gloves from the sleeves. The girl might get a light static shock, but nothing more than the old socks on the carpet trick might generate, as Yumi, in her rush, had forgotten to discharge the static that may have been building up naturally in her skin. “You okay there? I’m so sorry I didn’t see anyone coming through.”

Alas, Yumi’s offered hand was more aspirational than functional. Not only did Shouko’s awkward position make it difficult to actually take the hand, but even if she did, Yumi would soon realize just how heavy the stone battle dress which was well hidden by Shouko’s tunic could be. But regardless, Shouko would leap straight to her feet, showing no sign of the weight she held save for the solid thud when she landed! Gears turned in her mind as she calculated- By Yumi-senpai’s reaction, had she perhaps not realized? Then, couldn’t she pretend that this was a complete coincidence? Score! Two hands would clasp around the offered hand, and shake it as though Shouko had not noticed the static discharge.
“Yumi-senpai, it’s an honor to finally meet you! Your fight with Darren-senpai at the sports festival was so amazing! I only wish it could have matched up later in the bracket! It was only by a hair, you know! If it weren’t for Darren-senpai’s slight edge in hand-to-hand skills, it very well could have been you facing Tetsuko-senpai in the finals!” Chattering words like a machine gun would barrage the upperclassman, distracting her from the question of what Shouko had been doing in the room to begin with. Needless to say, anyone who could chatter so excitedly could not possibly be injured significantly.

Watching the girl jump up to her own feet so fluidly, Yumi wasn't all that surprised given the students at this school...but then she felt the light quake in the floor when she landed. It wasn't enough to shake Yumi's stance but damn whatever her quirk was it made her a lot heavier than she looked. Not that Yumi would be dumb enough to say that out loud just incase she was sensitive about it, but jesus Yumi was almost cautious to shake her hand incase it ended up being some sort of super strength death grip.
Of course, they did end up shaking hands, and since Yumi hadn't even remembered to discharge her static, she didn't even consider it a factor, so her apparent immunity to it didn't even pass through Yumi's mind as she returned a firm and eager hand shake as the other girl seemed to be filled with so much energy.
"O-oh you know me? I-I'm really sorry I don't seem to know you myself. Are you a new first year...?" She asked cautiously, though as the girl continued to explain how she knew her and even praise her on her fight, a light blush crossed Yumi's cheeks, unsure how to take this. Whenever her classmates had told her she did okay against Darren, it always felt like a pity congratulations. Like a participation medal or an 'almost kiddo' style pat on the back. With this girl it felt like she'd been genuinely engaged by the whole thing and Yumi didn't quite know how to take that in. It was easy to brush off the pity thanks but something like this just...very briefly, it came off as 'overwhelming'.
"W-well I...erm..." She let out a chuckle, trying to brush past her nerves with humor. "W-well I hardly think that would have been fair on Tetsuko...so g-guess it all worked out for an interesting finish...?"

“Yes! Iwasaka Shouko, at your service!” The rambunctious girl would introduce herself. It was no surprise that she herself wasn’t known- Battle analysis was a niche topic, to be sure. However, because she already knew that, she wouldn’t be put off at all when she wasn’t recognized! Egged on by the blush on her uppercalssman’s face, Shouko would push forward with talking about the match. “Yeah! When it came to that double midair knockout, I was certain they would call the match as a tie! But really, Darren-senpai’s feints are so strong! Even I could hardly tell which hits he took intentionally, and which he couldn’t dodge! And with his quirk, he’s so hard to hit in the first place! Let alone trying to keep him at a range… Gosh!”
Having faced Darren in a training match, Shouko knew full well how hard it was to pin the tournament finalist down! But that was why it was so impressive for Yumi to have some so close! “And just in terms of firepower, your electricity was top tier! Almost none of the competitors even came close, except for Darren-senpai and Tetsuko-senpai! And even then, I’d give the edge in power to you! And hitting Darren-senpai at full speed is hard enough at melee range, so to do it from a distance? Incredible!” The brunettes eyes glowed as she recalled her second favorite fight of the sports festival’s first round- How many times had she watched it now? More times than she could count, at least! Certainly only slightly less than she had watched that duel between Tetsuko and Arthur!
However, in a sudden turn from this gushing praise, Shouko would instead appear thoughtful as the second year student suggested that her being in the finals would have been unfair to Tetsuko. “Is… That really so?” Shouko queried. “I mean, metal does conduct electricity, and I can tell that you’ve been practicing using it to create electromagnetic forces, so… In my head, I don’t see why not… But in my heart, I just can’t imagine Tetsuko-senpai losing, you know? Like, it feels like she would pull out some obscure non-conductive isotope of iron right when it seems all hope is lost! Or at least reveal that she had been grounded the whole time as she unleashes one of the secret techniques of the Kashima Jishinkage-ryū! Ah, but would that be enough…? Geeehhhh…”
Grinding her teeth in frustration, Shouko realized that she truly could not tell who would win! She wanted to see it! She wanted to see this fight between two of the top students in the school!

As the praise continued to come, from this girl it just felt a lot more…no. Genuine wasn’t the right word. Despite her fangirling about it all, something about her was very..precise. She mentioned specifics that Yumi could latch onto. Not just ‘oh you did well against Darren’, but specifically mentioning the difficulties one might have hitting him when he moved at such speeds. That…now that actually made her feel a little better. It was something physical to latch onto, an actual idea of just how hard the task had been and just how hard she’d worked to get in those hits that she did.
“Y-yeah…he really kept moving huh? I mean, my main plan was just to keep him at a distance, but his offense was scary. Anytime I could gain some distance he was right back up in my face. It was like one of those horror movies where the monsters around every corner ya know? Hahaha!~” She had a good chuckle about the fight that wasn’t self deprecating for…well, honestly, definitely the first time. It made her feel a lot better to genuinely chuckle about it and she was more than happy to do so now, taking a soft breath through her nose. “Really though Darren definitely deserved that win. He even had ranged attacks I totally didn’t expect, his accuracy with those rocks was killer, and I was a lot more…frantic. I definitely gave him my all, but sometimes that just isn’t enough, ya know?” And she admitted that genuinely. Darren deserved her all, he got it, and with his all he’d came out the victor.
As things continued with the girl however Yumi’s heart briefly sank. Tetsuko WAS great and Yumi had immense respect for her. She didn’t have bombastic reputations like Jaz or Darren, but the reputation she did have was…quietly fearsome. No grand feats, but an immense skill clearly rested on her name as far as Yumi’d ever been able to tell. She’d met the girl in passing once during capture the flag but that was the most they’d ever interacted, and hearing this girl suggest that tetsuko may have ways around her quirk, Yumi almost wanted to fight her just to learn what those tricks might be, and as quickly as her heart sank, she had to admit she had as much awe in tetsuko as this girl had, even though she’d never met her personally beyond a passing interaction.
“Ya know what…you’re probably right. Tetsuko’s apparently a really smart and skilful girl. I wouldn’t put that sort of thing past her and I’d be more than eager to see what she can dish out at me to turn a battle on it’s head, hahah!~” She chippered up even further, though she caught something the other girl seemed to latch onto herself, lightly cupping her own chin and tipping her head to the side with a curious expression. “Oh? You know about electro magnesis? I mean…its how I fly but I’ve still been learning the ropes of it for anything other than myself. You’ve done your research if you know what I’ve been doing…”

There was no way to bolster enthusiasm like a positive response… And to Iwasaka Shouko, any response at all was positive! Seeing Yumi responding to her barrage of comments would only excite her more, leading to even more chatter. “Is it even possible to keep Darren-senpai at range? His quirk is so crazy strong! That kind of perfect control over his body… He doesn’t even need to leave any tells, because he can use his quirk instead of his muscles! Feints don’t work, he can instantly switch to defending against the real attack if you try one! And even in a corner, he can be sure to never be hit on the vitals! I know there’s gotta be some weakness to it, though, and I know I’ll be the one to find it! Or my name isn’t Mithra-Hime!” For one short slip of the tongue, Shouko had slipped back into her streaming mentality, even going so far as to refer to herself by her online ID.
“And even without his quirk, he’s hella strong! I got a hit in on him… His skin’s harder than my rocks, I tell you! How is that even possible! And you experienced his martial arts firsthand, he’s definitely not reliant on his quirk! He was holding back and we still got trounced!” Well, there were more reasons for it than that… But still, as expected of a tournament finalist! Darren was so strong! Naturally, she nodded along when it was said that Darren deserved the win. But even so, “But you know, next time, it might not go the same way? Fights are like that! Skill, timing, condition… Even luck plays a part! And next time, his ability to shoot won’t be a surprise, will it?”
Well, who knew which way a fight would fall until it played out. That was all a part of the charm! Naturally, having a captive audience to her favorite topic brought a blinding smile to the twintailed brunette’s face. She didn’t even notice that her social faux pas of suggesting that Tetsuko might win had disheartened her upperclassman. “Yeah! Tetsuko-senpai is so cool! A good half of my sports festival highlight reel is just her! The pride of Japanese swordsmanship! If there’s one fight that everyone should watch in their lifetime, it’s her match against Arthur! It was beautiful! Like a story! East vs. West! And you can really feel the rising tension in the fight, from struggling against Arthur’s aggression… Barely avoiding deadly blows, and barely missing on the return. And then the climax! You can see the indecision in her eyes… And poof, it’s gone! And the whole fight turns on its head. Ah! No wonder she was voted number one in the school!” The girl very nearly pulled out her phone to show off the highlights of Tetsuko-senpai, but paused. Ah, wasn’t it rude to wax so poetic about someone else right in front on Yumi, she realized perhaps three paragraphs too late. “Oh, you’re in there quite a bit too, of course! Here, you probably haven’t seen the fight from this angle yet! Check it out!”
Instead of pulling up videos of Tetsuko, Shouko would smoothly pull up scenes from Yumi’s fight. “Here, this one’s one of my favorites!” It was a still image, contrary to the usual videos. A stream of electricity rushed towards Darren, who chose not to dodge. The power of the attack could be seen in the damage to the stadium, rubble flying away on either side. If Yumi looked closely, she might even find the very same stone which Darren would soon after send flying towards her. It was a single shot which displayed the destructive power of which the redhead was capable, frozen in time for an eternity.
“Hmm? Oh, yeah! It took me forever to figure out how you did it! In fact, I’m still not sure I get it… Do you generate lift by creating opposing magnetic forces that push you away from the ground?” The brunette had tried to go into the physics of Yumi’s flight, but had long since realized that her expertise lay not in electromagnetism. And the complicated physics behind flight aside, she was trying to pick things up with it? As expected of an upperclassman! Shouko was going to have to redouble her efforts if she wanted to catch up to the legends of UA’s maiden class!

Yumi smirked a little as Shouko seemed to be so impressed by her upperclassmen she just couldn’t help but hype them up with every word she said about them. At least, that’s how Yumi heard it. She wasn’t saying Darren was difficult to keep away from, she was saying ‘is it even possible’. Those were hype words. If she didn’t make it as a hero, god forbid, Yumi could see her having a career as an announcer for school events or even just being some pro heroes manager. Sounded like she definitely had the chops for it, viewing every one of the students honestly and accurately and emphasizing all their unique traits in the process.
As far as what she was actually saying though, Yumi couldn’t help but hold a lightly cheeky smirk. Having worked along side Darren for so long, Yumi had started to get an idea of his weaknesses, but it was an incredibly difficult one to exploit. All the same, she felt like being a little cheeky, lightly tapping her fingertip to her lips and letting her eyes drift off to the side. “I think IIII know his weakness…~” She hummed softly, and a little cheekily to herself as she tempted Shouko with such information. She giggled and lifted her finger from his lips to add. “You’re definitely right though, in close quarters combat, he’s practically unstoppable. Perfect for dodging and getting in close, and there’s almost no way to read his movements. Meanwhile here I am probably choreographing all my attacks like a damn dance routine.” She chuckled a little at her own flaw, her love for anime meaning she probably gave her attacks a lot more wind up then they needed.
Of course she continued to go on about Darren and Yumi really didn’t mind, though hearing she had rough skin like that really surprised Yumi, her brow lifting in some surprised. “Really? Huh…not really something you can get a sense for when you shoot electricity I guess. He endured a lot but I always put that more to his determination than actually being tough enough to handle it. Guess I should keep that in mind if I ever have to take him on physically…” She gently rubbed her chin in thought about that, but shrugged it off a little as not something she needed to worry about too much, at least not right this moment. “Look at you though, taking on second years!~ Was this in one of those special introductory classes?”
She caught her comment about luck playing a part, and she wasn’t sure if she was pointing out the shoot style being a surprise for Herself or Yumi when she thought Darren, but either way- “Heheh! I guess not, I really gotta keep that in mind next time myself. He really caught me off guard with it!~”
Of course, as peppy as Yumi was hearing about everyone else could only last for so long, and while she respected Tetsu enough to know she deserved the praise, Yumi’s self doubt and paranoia was, just subtly, worming it’s way back into her system. The idea of luck being a factor hit her and…she really did wish she’d managed to go a little further in the tournament. Battling Darren was a great, intense battle, and the first REAL fight Yumi could say she’s ever had since being here, but just…ugh. Being wiped out so soon, then hearing all this praise, both at herself and the others she apparently compared to, and yet there she was, a first round loser…just her luck…
It didn’t show too much outwardly, but maybe Shouko caught on, cause soon enough Yumi was being shown a picture from her own fight, Yumi leaning over to see.
It was…certainly something. She’d never watched the footage of the fight, but seeing it from an outside angle was very different. She never fully registered just how much energy she was producing, the determined look in her eyes bordering on desperation but…like…in a cool way? Maybe it was a bit egotistical to admire herself in the image but as the person producing her energy she never got a good idea of what it looked like to everyone else. Until now at least... “Huh…” She was just a little dazed by it, needing to shake her head to snap out of it when the conversation moved on a little.
“O-oh! Yeah I mean, to be honest? I barely understand it. A friend of mine I talk to online figured out the science, but for me it was like…finding a new muscle to pull I guess? Once I figured out how to do it just right I just needed to practice, but they were the ones who put me onto the idea in the first place. Most of the praise rightfully belongs with them.” As Shouko asked how exactly it worked though, Yumi tried her best to explain.
“So, the way I understand it, I create a more ‘physical’ charge with a magnetic force to it, and it basically pushes me off the surfaces around me. That’s a limitation of it in fact, that I can only fly so high depending on how much charge I Generate. The higher I stay, the more energy I’m burning. BUT!” She decided to demonstrate, rushing off a little, her body turning blue with her electrical charge and skipping a little as she turned around to still address Shouko. “I can push myself off of vertical surfaces too! Watch!” She jumped up into a black flip, her body not landing however, streams of energy pushing off the ground below her and helping her stay afloat. She quickly flew off towards a wall to demonstrate her point, getting close to it, and the streams she was using became much shorter as she began to push off of the wall rather than all the way towards the ground. “This way I can climb buildings too, even if they’re too high for me normally!”

If Yumi thought that she could tempt Shouko into curiousity by saying that she knew Darren’s weakness… She was absolutely right! “Really? You know it? What is it!?” Like a puppy being shown a treat, Shouko’s eyes would turn wide as she begged. What was the perspective of the senpai who had fought Darren in person, who had been his classmate for a whole year? “He can definitely be overconfident and this caught off guard by surprise attacks,” She would guess before giving Yumi a chance to answer, “But that’s not a weakness of the quirk itself! I’d think it would strain his body, but I’ve never seen any signs of that in his battles…” Shouko frowned. Seriously, what was the flaw!?
As for Yumi’s choreographed attacks, Shouko didn’t consider that to be a flaw the way Yumi did. “Ehh, I don’t think that’s a bad thing, though?” She would step back and rub her chin in thought. “I mean, there’s really two types of fighters. There’s the ones like Darren-senpai who fight as it comes, turning experience into instinct… But that doesn’t mean it’s invalid to be the type who plans out their moves in advance! Sure, you have some wasted movements that you could get rid of, but that doesn’t mean you’re weaker by any means! Darren can get away with fighting like he does because his quirk lets him fix any bad moves before someone can take advantage of them. For a long range artillery like yourself, knowing where your next step will be can make the difference between life and death!” The brunette explained, only drawing some of her explanation from a battle manga. “Especially against someone like Darren who is faster and more mobile than you, the only way to get around that is to be thinking three steps ahead of him!”
Pausing for a moment, Shouko would flip her phone to an example of what she meant. “Here, this is a battle between two such analytical types, Rin and Ren- Said to be the #1 of their respective schools! Well, the results certainly shook that up a bit, but I digress. What matters is how it played out! See, Ren was less mobile than Rin… Well, immobile, really. But despite that, he was considered China’s number one student! That’s because his talents lay in strategy, he was able to use his powerful ranged explosions and array of versatile attack types to keep from having to move. But he wasn’t able to think far enough ahead to stay away from Rin, so when she got into his personal space… I’m sure you know the rest. My point is, as a long range artillery type like Ren! The most important thing is to be ahead of your opponent, to keep them from getting into your strike zone! Now, Darren’s precisely a terrible opponent for that type of fighter because he is so difficult to keep away, but that doesn’t make you wrong!” Shouko would insist. Well, perhaps Ren was a bad example of what she wanted to show… Heralded as the second coming of Bobby Fischer, was there really any trace of his lauded strategic capability in that entire fight? All she had seen was an idiot with more firepower than common sense… Like, even if he didn’t want to move, wasn’t it common sense to make it less obvious!? Was he that overconfident!? The sheer incompetence had made it difficult to praise Rin for the victory…
Well, hopefully her point got across. It wasn’t wrong to plan out your steps in advance, especially when you had such an impressive advantage in range! Well, while it wasn’t to Darren’s level, Yumi also had impressive mobility herself, so it wasn’t like she was entirely on arenas level… Gah! Just thinking about the so-called number one Chinese student made Shouko angry! Even if he was having an off day, did he really have to ruin her expectations for the battle between each school’s number one that badly!?
As the conversation continued, Shouko grew thoughtful. “Oh, I mean, that makes sense… A lack of tactile feedback, huh? That does explain why his strategy worked so well at the start.” Shouko mused, referring to how Darren had intentionally allowed himself to be struck by weaker bolts in order to get close to Yumi. Without tactile feedback, there wasn’t much in the way of knowing how much damage Darren would have taken from the hits! Speaking of tactile feedback, something nagged at her mind… But she would have to set it aside for now, because Yumi was already asking about her match with Darren! “Oh, yeah! The school set up these two vs. one training matches with the upperclassmen, it was so cool! Isaakun and I were matched with Darren… He was on us before we’d even made introductions! It was like wham, and bam, and boom-“ As she spoke, Shouko would make incomprehensible hand gestures which seemed to be an attempt to tell the story of the match. “And I was like thwomp, But he went all whoop… And Isaac was like bwah… Well, it went something like that anyways. I managed to get in some good hits, though! Even drew blood! But I think he stopped holding back after that because he knocked me out in just one hit…” The brunette rubbed her midsection, clearly recalling a rather painful blow. Still, to have managed to draw blood, was already impressive! Though her storytelling skills could probably use some work to be on par with her fighting ability…
And in the end, they finally came to the part Shouko was waiting for! “Oh, is that so? I”d love to meet the person who figured it out! Do they just work with you, or are they a professional at working out quirk capabilities?” Shouko would love to meet a fellow quirk theorycrafter- Sometimes, there was more than meets the eye to a power, and the idea of someone who could draw out that potential was very much so attractive to her! And she watched with rapt attention as Yumi demonstrated how her abilities let her fly. Returning to the ground, Shouko could only offer a hearty round of applause! And then a pause… There was that nagging feeling again, her brows furrowed…. “Oh! That’s it! The reason it’s so much easier to lift yourself than to lift objects… Tactile feedback! When you’re lifting yourself, you can feel the forces on you, right? So it’s easy to adjust! But when it comes to something else… You can’t feel anything since it’s not physical! Is that it!” The girl exclaimed, confident that this was right. But if that was the case… Hmm, was there an easy way to adjust for that fact? Shouko’s theorycrafting mode fully engaged as she looked between the upperclassman and the scattered equipment in the room.

Yumi chuckled just a little as Shouko gave her own retelling of her battle with a fellow student against Darren, and hoo boy was it a fun watch, her little gestures and ‘sign language’ on the topic along with the way she described it all. Yumi couldn’t help but comment idly, the words slipping out before she could really stop them. “Wow, you’re a lot better retelling these things when you’re not in the middle of ‘em huh?” She smirked, hopefully that was taken in good humor but still the energy she presented when trying to retell it all just made Yumi smile all the same. She’d have to ask Darren what they thought of Shouko if she ever got the chance, but running into him was a little hard with how dedicated he was to his training.
“Still, drawing blood huh? With Darren’s speed I’d say you definitely got a good shot in there. I don’t get the same reaction, what with my sparks and all but-“ She looked to her hand, sparks flickering around her fingers as she lingered in thought. “I can definitely tell he’s got a hardiness to him most people don’t. Ignoring how his quirk lets him move even when his body gives in, the ability to even find the energy to move when I zap one of his limbs…it’s definitely something…” She chuckled a little to lighten the mood, then pointed to herself as she made light of the fact- “Me meanwhile? Frail as glass. I put out a repulsive force when I’m fully charged. Helps shots miss me or weakens blows a little, but if something gets through it im more frail than even some normal athletes and stuff. I think I’m a little hardier than the average joe but my pain tolerance is no where near Darren or tetsuko ya know?”
Geeze maybe she shouldn’t be giving out her weaknesses to little miss battle analyst…Eh. She should be fine. Surely.
As they got back to the topic of her flight and using the same forces on other objects, Yumi snapped her fingers at the comment of tactile feedback. She’d never known the word before now but from context she could tell that was exactly it. “That’s exactly it! I mean, learning to fly was still hard but I’m getting nothing when I try this! It’s such a guessing game with my quirk? I just shoot stuff out but I never feel a sensation when it hits something, and it’s hard to really tell exactly where I’m going wrong. Like er…er…” She tried quickly to find an analogy that made enough sense…
Okay she thinks she had it. “Okay so, I see it like er…it’s like constantly trying to get 100 percent on a test, but no one teaches you the answers, there’s no books on the topic, and all you ever get back is a percentage. Not what questions were wrong, which are right. I can tell I’m doing SOMETHING right when the stuff moves a little more than normal, but is it because I stopped doing one thing, and started doing another? Or is it cause im doing something I don’t even realize?! It’s so hard to get a hold on this!”
She sadly didn’t realize as she finally got to let out why this was so hard for her, she’d forgotten to give more details of her pen pal friend.

With an “Ehehe,” Shouko would shrug off the aspersion on her storytelling ability. Well, compared to the sports fest matches which she had watched time and time again to create her analysis, the match which she only watched a few times to make notes for self improvement… Was naturally less familiar! Which was rather ironic, considering she had been there in person. “Yeah! He got caught off guard and Isaakun glued him to the floor. An axe kick right to the head!” Shouko mimed the falling kick with her hands. “Really, I think he just got overconfident and wasn’t watching Isaakun closely enough! Next time, I doubt it’ll be so easy… But I’ll be stronger too!” She gave no reason for doubt that there would be a next time. Whether or not Isaac would be there for it, remained to be seen!
She completely forgot about Darren’s weakness, even as Yumi supplied her own unbidden. “Oh, is that so? That makes sense!” Electricity didn’t do much to toughen up the body, and Yumi wasn’t the martial powerhouse that Darren was. As she had explained, Yumi was a long range artillery… Their defenses were low, because if their target got close enough for it to matter, they were already losing! “But once you master picking up objects, you’ll be able to apply it to your repulsion, right? You’ll be on a whole new level!” In Shouko’s mind, there were two ways to get stronger- To emphasize one’s strengths, or to eliminate one’s weaknesses! Both had their advantages and disadvantages, of course! If Yumi could reduce the threat of close range foes, even Darren would struggle despite his innate advantage! Similarly, if she enhanced her offensive ability even more, she might be able to keep him from getting close in the first place! Shouko had no place saying which was better, unless she saw both in action! But thinking about it, she would offer another idea- “Have you considered upgrading the defensive capabilities on your suit? Having a more passive defense might be more suitable than having to actively deter attacks.” Why waste mental energy calculating how to reflect attacks, when you could have a suit that did it for you! Although, that hadn’t worked out too well for the long range artillery she had just been using as an example...
Having her guess confirmed caused Shouko’s chest to puff out with pride as she nodded. But even knowing this, how could they solve the problem? “Hmm, hmm, hmmm, indeed. Even knowing that… Is there a way to create feedback, I wonder?” The brunette furrowed her brows as she contemplated the problem. Perhaps have it send back a jolt to create a complete circuit? But how would that create a different sensation based on whether the object was successfully held or not. Gah! It was so easy to come up with ways to use quirks in combat, so why was it so hard to figure this little trick out!? “Have you talked to your pen pal about it? Perhaps they have some ideas on the subject!” Shouko had high expectations for this mysterious pen pal of Yumi’s- They had figured out flight, right? Surely they would be able to come up with a feedback mechanism for lifting objects!

Talking to Shouko was just an all around pleasant experience. She talked about quirks the way Yumi sometimes wished she could. As much as she liked to analyse quirks her lack of technical knowledge and…well, a good brain on her shoulders made it difficult sometimes. She theorized a lot of things, thinking about the potential behind a quirk a lot whenever she found out about a new one, but there wasn’t really much she could do beyond that. She struggled to get a sense for how a quirk actually worked behind the scenes, but Shouko here seemed to have a knack for relating to that. Of course she’d never have a perfect idea of it, no one could, but she was having a damn good go at it and Yumi was loving talking to her.
“Yeah, once I get it down, I could definitely incorporate actual objects into my arsenal…there’s something specific I wanna try but I need to get this down first. “ She thought quietly to herself on that, wondering if it’d ever actually be possible, but the anime that she got the idea from had given her a lot of ideas that had panned out so far, so maybe if she was lucky she manage to pull it off eventually. Who knew. For now she could just work on what she knew was possible, excel at that, and continue to move forward from there. “It’s a work in progress all the same though, and definitely something to work on.”
On the topic of her needing a more passive form of defence, she looked down to herself and chuckled. “Yeah I guess this is a bit flimsy, and the girl underneath it ain’t too solid either. Really though it’s hard enough to get my costume to control my quirk anyway. The exposed skin too is to make sure that my energy can get out in the manners I need it to to be useful. I do kinda have a passive defense though…” She stepped closer, offering her hand out with “Put your hand over mine.”
Assuming Shouko complied, she wouldn’t feel anything as she lingered her hand over Yumi’s. As Yumi charged herself however, and her skin was coated in the usual blue, sparking energy, she’d start to feel a constant sensation pushing her hand up from Yumi’s. Not so much she couldn’t fight against it, but akin to two opposing magnets. It was possible to get them to touch but there was a bit more force needed than anything else. “With my power getting stronger and stronger, I started emitting a natural repulsive force. Undeneath it all I’m as squishy as ever, but it came in handy fighting Darren. I wouldn’t have survived nearly as many of his attacks if this wasn’t a thing.”
She shut off her charge and, if shouko had been pushing against the repulsion, she’d draw back her hand so it didn’t drop into hers and slap into it, a casual shrug as she commented. “Some people have a high pain tolerance, some people have thick skin…I have a very weak forcefield. Eheheh..~”
Still, it was something to take on board. “Useless without my quirk though…so you have a point. I’ll talk to my pen pal Valda about some upgrades. She keeps calling them prototypes, so it’s hardly like she’s done designing them afterall. She’d probably enjoy the challenge too. I’ve actually asked her for an upgrade anyway by making me a visor.” She tapped the side of her head in line with her eyes. “My body resists my electricity, but I don’t have a resistance to the light it produces, so a shaded visor would help me a lot in combat. Hopefully she can get some upgrades to the defensive aspects of the suit out at the same time eh?~”
She thought for a moment on the feedback, thinking if that was possible, but again unsure how to really accustom to that. If she could get an inkling of a sensation when she had something, she COULD start to program her mind to create a larger feedback charge out of instinct, but beyond that, unless the object was metal, she didn’t have much she could think of. Metal was always gonna be the easiest thing to lift anyway, but this was a unique thing to tackle. When Shouko suggested asking her pen pal, she chuckled a little. “I mean, yeah I could, and I definitely will, but an issue of just talking through text is she never has much to go on. She’s ALL theory. She knows I can produce electricity and learns as I do, but HOW it works is a little beyond the both of us. Like, it’s not like I’ve been dissected and got a list of it all ya know? I know it’s special muscle fibres, but how I generate it so specifically…well, neither of us could work off of that…you gave me a lot to work on though, so thank you Shouko.” She smiled brightly, before offering. “Hey, you wanna spar a little? You seem like the kind to get excited for a little action.~”

As usual, Yumi knew exactly how to pique Shouko’s interest! “Oh? What is it you want to try?” Shouko asked out of curiousity. She doubted she would see it to completion, but what kind of technique did the esteemed Tasukai Yumi have aspirations of figuring out? Shouko was certain that whatever it was, it would be suuuuper cool! Her eyes gleamed in anticipation of the answer- Surely it would be far from mundane! But as for what else Yumi had to say, Shouko was in total agreement. “Mmhmm! Training is a lifelong journey! As long as you keep at it, I’m sure you’ll see results!” She encouraged her upperclassman with enthusiasm!
As Yumi explained that it would be difficult to get both defensive capabilities and supplementing her quirk control into her quirk at the same time, Shouko nodded in understanding. It had just been an off the cuff idea, so she wasn’t too bothered by being wrong. Plus, wasn’t she herself the perfect proof of how it was sometimes important to show a little skin in order to make the most use of one’s hero suit? But what came next was a pleasant surprise! “Oooh?” Shouko hummed in interest as Yumi proffered her hand to show off what she was talking about. There was no need to ask her twice! Shouko’s hand shot out as if Yumi would change her mind!
At first, she felt nothing. Her hand just sat in the air over her senpai’s. But soon, a blue glow appeared around it, and Shouko started to feel pressure on her hand. “Oh wow, that’s cool! It’s like trying to force together the matching ends of strong magnets… errrgh…” She couldn’t help but try to push through the Field with her physical strength, just to see how strong the field was. Through brute strength, she started to make headway- Just in time for Yumi to cut the power. Shouko’s hand fell straight through where Yumi’s hand had been. Fortunately, the weight of her battle dress beneath her tunic kept her balance, so she wouldn’t fall over! That would have been embarrassing! “Wao, that’s cool! Let’s see, With that amount if force, I think I’d be able to push through it, barely… Soooo,” She wiggled her finger about in the air as she crunched some numbers in her head. “Eh, probably about as hard to break through as my stone? That’s pretty good! Especially since I bet it’s even stronger when used against metal, it felt like it was using magnetic forces?” She supposed. It wasn’t enough to completely stop Darren, of course, but it would definitely be enough to soften his blows!
To add to Yumi’s statement, “And I have a rock!” Shouko would add unashamedly!
“Oh, a visor?” Shouko would key onto one specific part of Yumi’s current suit expansion plans. “That, hmm. Oh, idea! What if you had them add to the visor, like, a filter that catches the ionization from these weak lines you’re using to grab the objects! You might not be able to make a feedback loop easily, but that what let you ‘see’ what you’re doing, so that you can see what worked when you got it right! That might just work!” Shouko declared excitedly. Although it would take more practice than a feedback loop would- Needing to see what you were doing wasn’t always feasible- But it was certainly easier than fumbling blindly!
But it seemed the idea was less likely to work than it initially seemed- “Oh, I see. That would definitely make it harder, hmm…” To create a feedback loop or filter for the specific ionization would require specific testing of the electrical forces which she was using- Not something that could be done over text messaging! But it seemed like it had given some food for thought, so it might work out after all! “Mm, yeah, quirks are like that! But to get this far on theory alone is amazing! I’d love to meet her. Him? It. One day!” Someone with that level in theory definitely wouldn’t stay obscure forever!
And finally, the hook that caught the bait. “Eh, a spar? With you?” Shouko’s mind worked furiously. On the one hand, there was a roughly 90% chance that she was knocked out cold by the first zap and would wake up in the infirmary… And miss out on an entire possible training session that she could watch. ON THE OTHER HAND, that meant there was a ten percent chance that she got to see Yumi in combat from closer than ever before, for at least two blows! In the tripartite mind of Shouko, the Battle Maniac and the Superpower Battle Maniac ganged up to silence the Superpower Maniac! “Heck yeah! I’d love to, Yumi-senpai! Ah, just let me… Just a second.”
With that vague statement, Shouko’s hand would wander to the sash around her waist, the band of fabric which held up her tunic- And give it a yank. Coming free, the thick cloth would loosen, revealing white shoulders as it slid down. ”Ah… Don’t stare too much. It’s embarrassing.” Shouko would murmur with an unusual meekness, as her hero costume was finally revealed- From the top, a band of stone which cupped around the brunette’s chest- And from there to her waist, a completely bare body. It truly was an embarrassing amount of skin to show! But as the one who had designed the costume… urgggh…
Anyways, from her waist down, at least, was covered! A billowing stone dress fell below her knees, making it curious how it had not been visible below her tunic in the first place! If her midriff must be bare, she would at least hide her legs! And the long skirt had some other nifty properties that made it too useful of a Hero Costume to trade in for something less embarrassing… “Anyways, this is my costume! I carved it myself! Ahh… I swear, there’s a reason for it being like this! I’m not an exhibitionist! I’m not an exhibitionist!!” She repeated it twice for emphasis! “Ahem…” Regaining her composure slightly, Shouko tried to force herself back into the state of mind she felt during battle- That place where embarrassment was nothing. Stepping back, she planted her feet on the floor, and raised her arms to form a middle guard. Not that it would do much against lightning, but she would worry about that later!
“Yaogun Style, Iwasaka Shouko. Please treat me well!”

Yumi chuckled at Shouko’s eagerness to hear about her ideas. She always theorized about other’s quirks herself but Yumi tended to be a little nervous talking details with them, so seeing someone who could do that but also was very eager to offer her opinion and to hear more ideas from the quirks owner…well, it was nice, and it made her think maybe she should be a little less paranoid in her own pursuits of giving people advise with their quirks. Still, she felt a bit stupid as she readied herself to say it allowed. “Well er…there’s this really old anime about a girl with powers like mine? Like, we’re very different in a lot of ways too, but she had this unique skill of being able to fire coins like a railgun? I was thinking…if I could start to really learn how to control the magnetic output of my quirk, then it’d be a great boon. Electricity is all well and good afterall, but somethings are immune to it…those things are not however immune to a railgun.” She smirked and added. “It’d be a hail mary of course. Something I could never use on the average person, only someone I was sure could take it, or when I knew I wouldn’t endanger anyone but…hey, would be a damn cool signature move to pull off, don’t ya think?~” She winked and stuck her tongue out playfully, hoping that the girl before her shared some of her wavelength on the matter. “Still, a long ways off whatever the case.”
With the demonstration of her repulsive forces, even Yumi was just a little surprised how much Shouko struggled to push through it. She supposed her output had increased a lot since the sport festival, that or using Darren as a ‘base line’ for how easy it was to get through was a big mistake. She’d always thought it acted like a cushion of air between her and the incoming attacks, but again, when you’re dealing with super powered individuals, it’s really hard to get a strong idea of what is or isn’t normal.
“Theoretically it should be a little better against metal. I did some test shots with the practice ammunition we have for one of our training classes. The guns weren’t aimed at me direction, but the flight path definitely changed when I had my quirk on. Teacher said it should help me go into live ammunition situations with some good odds, but I should definitely keep moving. Afterall.” She pinched the edge of her waist, her intention was to emphasize a bit of flab, but once again, she was a little surprised by how tight her flesh was. The smoother flesh she’d had at the beginning of the year was wrapped around a tight, fit waistline now, and she blushed a little, realizing how much work she’d done the past year. “I er…erm…I’m still the same old fleshbag underneath…” Maybe a lot less flesh now though, she quietly thought to herself as she rubbed the back of her own neck.
She’d smirk a little at Shouko’s comment, tempted to ask what her quirk was, but maybe she’d catch that later.
With the suggestions she began to add about the Visor, Yumi’s eyes widened, more than a little surprised by how well that actually registered with her. Her lips parted for a moment, trying to find a way that couldn’t work. As if it was too good an idea to actually be plausible, but the ability to see these intangible electrical currents, helping her better user her quirk and getting a one up on the bad guys, while also providing shade for her eyes so she didn’t go blind from her own quirk? Heck even as Shouko began to back pedal when it was brought up that her friend could only get the information Yumi gave her-
“No! No that actually works super well! I’d say ‘I can’t believe I didn’t think of that’ but that is way too smart for me to have ever come up with!” She exclaimed with some glee. “I mean, it’d likely take a lot of time, getting someone to record my output, sending it to my pen pal, her making a lot of prototypes to see what works but…yeah! This could definitely work! And it’d be a great help. It’d be useless with any other charges like you said, I wouldn’t suddenly be able to see all energy or anything but…YEAH! This’d be great!” She even did a small hop on the spot out of glee, a bright grin on her face, repeating this idea in her mind several times just to ensure she didn’t forget it before she next spoke to Valda. “SHE will be very excited to work on this idea, I’m sure!~”
As Shouko seemed to readily take up her offer of a little spar, the other girl also seemed to take the opportunity to…undress? Yumi wasn’t someone who tended to see or feel shame in such acts, so she innocently turned her head to the side with a curious look, but as Shouko seemed to show a hint of embaressment, her head would lift more to attention. “O-oh. Sorry.” Even if she felt no shame herself, she’d respect others embaressment when it was pointed out to her, quickly turning on her heels, hands behind her back and just looking up into the rafters as she swayed back and forth on her heels.
When it seemed like Shouko was done, she’d turn back around, actually questioning how the skirt of the stone battle dress had indeed been hiding, but giving a soft, impressed whistle at it all the same. “Hey! I’m the one who’s showing off my midrift in a skin tight suit, don’t be thinking you should be embaressed about your costume there hun.” With Shouko ready to go, she’d burst off the floor with her sparks, leaping backwards and landing slowly thanks to her electrical tendrils touching the floor. Her body coated in sparks, she’d lower herself into a ready position.
She’d ask genuinely, with no hint of sarcasm, cheekiness, or cockiness. “You want me to go a little easy? I wouldn’t want to miss out on seeing what you’ve got too.~”
