Once again Kaz would impress with his colorful descriptions while making use of ideas thought up of on the fly. Even though some of the kids found it funny that she went with sumo for the contest, she felt a necessity to go back to something more traditional. She actually pulled this idea from a similarly old but famous Japanese folktale, Kintaro. Setting up an exciting match that Momotaro handily won, it was finally time for the main villain to show up. The story was heading towards the climax and Karen though she did not show it was sharing the same eagerness and anticipation as the children with regards to how the plot would play out. However much to their disappointment Kaz would cut it short. Karen glanced at the clock as Kaz tried to make up an excuse for the kids. She didn't know how story reading typically worked here as it was her first time sitting in but apparently they only had so much time to spend on each book before moving on. It was a little unusual in her opinion but Kaz was the veteran here so she would trust him to keep to whatever schedule they had. Surprisingly for the next book he didn't bother going with any improvisation and just told the tale as is. She finally understood what he meant when he said that the children would typically ask lots of questions during story time. Old tales just didn't have as much of a pull on kids these days but she was sure he did his best. If there was any opportunity for her to help him clarify things she would happily chime in with her thoughts. She had been helping him since earlier anyway so this wasn't a big deal. As story time came to a close Karen would get to see that Kaz was well liked after all by the kids in general. She may have established herself in a day, but nothing beats someone who visited on a regular basis. At the very least she was sure she wouldn't nearly get as much requests to come by again as her schoolmate did. Finally getting away from them, he walked on over to get her opinion which she was glad to give. "I think it went quite well. I must admit you caught me off guard with asking for my inputs in that first story and I enjoyed trying to keep up with your creativity. It wasn't an easy task at all."She would chuckle softly. Of all the places to get a challenge she didn't expect to find one here and certainly not in the way events had transpired. "And to think you only consider this as prep. I can sort of appreciate more now the kind of effort you put into the real deal. I won't pry into your reasons. If you love what you do, that's what matters~"Karen checked the time again. Truth be told she had already overstayed a bit. She only did so because she heard a fellow student was coming and wanted to meet them. She had long accomplished what she came here to volunteer for. "Are you heading back to campus after this? Mind if we go together?~"

Still weird that he let slip the word 'prep.' It's far more real to admit that he just likes reading to kids. Well, maybe it wasn't fully wrong. As a performer, he is fully expecting to start out entertaining kids. Shows, plays, even small stage shows, even being a hero...if it helps brighten up a kid's (or anyone at that matter) day, then it's all been worth it. That's a good enough reason to do this sort of thing. But just calling it 'prep' is...dunno. Maybe Kazu's being humble here. Maybe he's being prideful. Who knows.
Kazu notes her question. "Campus, huh...yeah, think that's good. Hold on, let me just let her know." Walking forward to the caretaker, he lets them know about them leaving. She nods and gives off a gentle smile. "Always a pleasure with you around. oh, And Karen, hope you come back one day!" She heads to the kids to make them get ready for nap time or to talk with incoming parents. "Alright. Think we're in the clear. They're about to sleep so um...let's not keep them awake." He whispers at Karen as the two start to head off. He turns his head to see the kids off, and for a moment he could have swore Hideshi waved goodbye...oh no wait he's pulling his eye with a smile. That...that's good enough, Kazu sighs and shakes his head, chuckling a bit.
He never actually done this whole bit. Walking back to the dorms with someone after a day of volunteering. Usually he'll just go straight back home/to the dorm by his lonesome self. And by that, that usually means "get distracted by something that's either shiny or cool looking and spend a couple of minutes gawking at it and perhaps even writing down the event so he can remember it later. But now he has someone to talk with. Someone who is known for being somewhat coy, but still someone. Should he ask as to why exactly she was in the daycare, though it was really obvious...eh. Really no need to do so, after all, it's basically for the same reason as his.
"...So, what are you gonna do now?" Kazu asked. He carries his books under one arm as he checks his phone, seeing the train schedule as well as messaging his sister about today's events. "You planning to keep doing this? I mean, the whole volunteering thing? Or you gonna go help out another school?" He cracks his neck a bit. "I mean, either way it's still helping out so there's nothing inherently wrong, but still. If you were gonna continue helping out that place, it's gonna be hectic at times." He chuckles a bit.
...No that's not really what he wanted to ask.
"...Is it weird?" He mutters under his breath. "Ya know, the whole bit? Like, clearly a lot of people like it but...lately it seems that they don't? And it's weird? Eh?" He kinda made a slight swiggled frown, holding onto the books harder. "What do you think, Hoshizora?"

It didn't take long to sort out their last few duties and bid the kids farewell for now. It was nap time for some while a few were already going to get picked up by their parents. Karen exchanged some greetings with those parents she did know and assured to contact them again soon. As for the daycare lady she was as jolly and cheerful as ever, appreciative of Karen's presence that day. It was hard to promise when she'd drop in again but she would try. After returning the daycare apron, they were off. Karen was starting to feel that Kaz had gotten over his initial nervousness from having her around and had become a lot easier to talk to and more responsive. She was actually half expecting that he would decline walking back together and perhaps make up an excuse that he had somewhere else to be or had something else to do. She of course welcomed the opportunity to get to talk more as there wasn't really much time for that while they were looking after the kids earlier. He asked if she was going to keep showing up there. It was a question that she was sure would come up. He probably wasn't looking forward to getting surprised again, though he sounded more positive about it. "I honestly can't say. My reason for going today was primarily for business. I love children and looking after them as much as the next person, but to fit this volunteer work regularly into my schedule would be tough. I did promise to visit again though, so while I'm not sure when, I'll definitely drop by occasionally. I had fun today."She wanted to be truthful there as she didn't want to give the wrong impression. The next question was a little more unexpected. Naturally it didn't escape her notice that Kaz wasn't in character today. She didn't really know how people like him went about their private lives, if they kept the 'performance' up everywhere or not. Obviously Kaz just demonstrated that he had these days when he was simply a 'normal' person. It was all an accident stumbling into him like that but Karen sort of felt that it might have been bothering him that a classmate saw him in such a state. She pondered for a bit what to say, showing that she was giving this some thought. She wasn't sure if she might touch a sensitive spot after all. But at the same time she was really the type to just be honest. Hopefully he wouldn't feel offended. "I suppose it's a given that it's unusual. You don't see a lot of people acting like that right? But it's hardly the oddest thing in this world of quirks. Personally I feel it's impressive that all of it seems to be deliberate and practiced. I never would have guessed before seeing you today."There was a slight pause. "I'm not sure if that's what you wanted to hear. It's hard to talk about it when I don't know your reasons. And I assume they're good ones. I'm not the most well-versed on this sort of thing you see. But I guess I'll go by what I said earlier. If you love what you do then keep at it. As long as you're not hurting anyone, you don't need to let critics get you down."Karen was either the wrong person or right person to ask about whether someone or something was weird. She was a firm supporter of individuality and freedom of expression. He wasn't going to get a negative response here if that's what he was looking for. She would tell you that it wasn't right to feel bad about being different from everyone else. That was just the kind of upbringing she had.

Kazu pauses a bit. "...Hmmmmmmm." He nods his head left and right deliberating if that was really the answer he wanted to hear. "...Guess that makes sense. Besides, I wasn't gonna stop no matter what you said, by the way." He slightly laughs nervously. "If I did that I would have stop way earlier. Like....way earlier." He then does an aside glance as he remembers the several people in the past who have indeed tried to do that. "Way earlier." He whispers to himself. He slightly releases his tight grip on the books. "That's just how a performer should be." He gives off a self assured smirk to ease up this weird nervous tension.
"Besides, the critics are the best part. You gotta have some people try to put you know. It's the only way to get better. If you're only praised in good compliments without mentioning the bad stuff, then you're doing something wrong. No such thing as a perfect performance, and no such thing as a perfect person. That's what Dad used to say." It's technically correct, but the person who actually said that was his sister who was quoting a thing dad said to her while he was asleep like the tired kid he was. "Plus it's always good to know what to change around once you get the critiques back. Did you know that I used to include more dramatic pauses? God, that was a mistake, pff. Glad that everyone told me to knock it off." He laughs a bit. "It's all just one slow development. That's all."
He looks back at Karen. "Anyway. Think we're almost at the train station. Let me just check if I got the pass and....yup, got it. You wouldn't believe just how many times I've forgotten it. At this point I should probably put it on a chain..." He places his wallet in his pocket. "Welp, should probably hurry up if we don't want to miss the train. If we do...well um...i'll get us a snack while we wait. Seems fair right?"
------
And now you see why being the chronicler is much more impressive than the average self. After all, he wouldn't let these sort of things slip through easily. No, he would keep them under wraps as a proper Chronicler should do, and do them perfectly in one try. The Chronicler wouldn't have let these kids just talk back to him. No! He would have enticed them with the regaling of his latest record, giving them a first hand account of the memories of the world! He also would have done it himself without any aid because as the chronicler of the world, he could have not asked for tips and just followed his instincts! That is just common sense! This is why he perfers being a chronicler, you know. For being a chronicer...
Aw screw it.
Kazu had fun today. He always does. It's nice to stop being in character intentionally once in a while.
Better than that one time, at the very least.
