The chronicler of the world is known for many things. He is known for being a wise scribe who has written down the records of history on his trusty Chronicle, making sure that no one shall forget this moment when someone dares read this ancient source of information in the far future. He is also a fantastic orator whose words can shine a light onto the dark path of anyone who is lost and unaware of their own potential; his words can bring from the brink their spirits and empower them to fulfill their destinies as a potential chosen one. He can also do a backflip. Yes, he can. Do not trust that man colored in red who says that he once saw him practicing in the fields and fell on his face, groaning in pain and despair. He was totally practicing in the gym and definitely didn't feel the urge to do it outside, serious. Can any of you do a proper backflip or any other directional variant of a flip? Hmm? Thought s-oh wai-wait you can?...anyway the point is! The point...the point is that as a chronicler, Kaz has the power to do these things with great ease.
But of course he can do this, it’s what he was born to be. Someone who is able to aid others in times of need. Someone who can rejoice when there is no one else who can rejoice. Someone who was invented to...well simply, to aid and entertain. For what better reason is a chronicler meant to be than someone who can entertain the masses and aid those in trouble? There is no greater reward than to see a satisfied chosen one with his own eyes. Anything is necessary in order to help them out. That is what being a chronicler is. And he won't change any bit of it whatsoever.
But...right now there's no real reason to, like, act or perform as the "Chronicler" character right now.
Kazu is checking on his phone for any emails or messages as he walks toward Tokyo Elementary. Usually, around this time he gets word from the UA chat about some weird shenanigans or other random business. He's dressed up in a casual orange dress shirt slightly opened revealing a novelty t shirt with a huge logo of his favorite show. Every two weeks, usually on this day or so, he would often go to the school to help out the daycare. He doesn't do much, all he does is keep an eye out on some kids, help out the main lady in charge, then he closes off his services by reading a story. You know, nothing much. He's carrying some books to read to the little kids, which usually end with some of them yelling for him to come up with a new one on the spot. It's a bit annoying but at the same time its kinda cute to hear them want him to tell a story...kinda makes him work more on preparing beforehand though. He has to like work out on the characters and the voices and...gah, it's so much effort. But, in a way, he supposes it's worth it to see them happy...plus, at the very least, they're stuck in place until their parents come in to pick them up. He owes the person in charge a lot and wants to pay her back, so what better way than to help her out?
Kazu enters the place and sees the person in charge."Hey, Mrs. [INSERT NAME OF DAYCARE LADY]! Did I get here in time?" She notices him and gives a gentle smile. "Oh, Kazu, there you are! Great timing too, we were just finishing playing outside." She cheerfully states. "Alright, sounds good. Got me some books to read to them. Hopefully I can get through at least one of them this time." He casually jokes, chuckling a little. "Oh don't worry, they'll be alright. Plus, we had some extra help!"
Kazu pauses a bit. Yeah sure, it's not strange for other people to come in and volunteer to work...but today at this time? It's a bit weird. "Really? Man I feel bad for them trying to handle all these kids by themself. I'll make sure they're alright." "Oh they weren't that bad. It's just the usual troublemakers." "Ah, right, Hideshi. Of course. Don't worry, I'll keep an eye out on him." He reassures her, looking out to see who was burdened with outside care.
"....Wait wha. Th-that's..What is she doing here?" He stares at the new aide, who has spotted him as well. "...Karen?"

Volunteer work was not something Karen engaged in often, not because she didn't want to but because on most days there simply wasn't any time to even think about or consider it. She did have some experience back in middle school as part of some school activities but they were few and far between. And so finding herself helping out today at the daycare in Tokyo Elementary was truly a rare occasion. It was brought about by business. Specifically a couple of the kids' parents happened to be customers at their company store and had so graciously spread the word to their fellow parents. Word of mouth was a powerful advertising tool and so Karen was here to see what they could do for them, news having reached the daycare people themselves and happy to have someone arrange for outfits for some of the kids. Karen being Karen, rather than just do the bare minimum, she decided to do volunteer work altogether as she felt that was the best and most natural way to get close to the children. Now Karen loved kids in general. They flipped her older sister switch so hard. She barely knew them for half a day and most of them were already comfortable with calling her Onee-san. That was the Karen magic at work. Still not all of them were perfect little angels. The rare troublemakers were even extra wary of a new face suddenly making herself at home in their little kingdom. It would take a bit more time but Karen was determined to win them over. For now though she would keep an eye out for what they were like. While chatting with the person in charge it came to light that she was a UA student. Apparently there was someone else from UA who regularly helped out at the daycare. The lady neglected to share a name but in Karen's head she assumed that it was possibly an upperclassman or even a teacher. At the very least among those she knew from her year she couldn't think of anyone who was likely to be doing this sort of work. And so she would continue with the day's duties and looking after the kids expecting to run to an upperclassman later on. Naturally she was wrong. While shepherding the kids back inside after their playtime, Karen would spot a familiar face speaking with the daycare lady who would spot her too. He looked a bit different though, specifically his choice of attire. Karen herself was only wearing her usual uniform but with a daycare apron over it. As she still sort of had her hands she simply smiled and waved and then flashed a quick peace sign before turning her attention back to the kids and making sure no one was left outside. From the look on Kaz's face however, he was probably more surprised than she was. This put her in quite a good mood. It was rare for her to meet people outside school and seeing what they were like in their private time.

Kazu blinks as he recognizes his fellow student with a sort of surprised expression. Well, the more proper way to describe his face was a mixture of befuddlement with one slightly closed eyes and a confused slightly opened lips with his teeth still closed. He quickly tries to change his expression but it's pretty obvious that she saw it. It wasn't that he didn't enjoy the company...but he kinda didn't want to do it with company. Okay, look, yeah sure, usually the daycare upholds the right to have several other volunteers to help out, but at the same time he kinda picked this time so that he can just do it and leave without anyone else telling him "oh hey mind helping me?" on some other activity that is way above his skill level. He can handle reading things to kids. Taking care of them? He can't even begin to say just how impossible that task is. First of all, those kids are FAST. Have you seen them scurry around after a good nap or after eating a snack? Those kids can't be bothered to put on the breaks for one second! Yeah sure it's fun to run with them trying to stop them or set up a small race but still. It's a miracle they managed to stay put during story time. Another thing that he can't handle is just how many questions related to random things keep popping up. So many topics, so many triva, so many...gah, the amount of it is just too much to handle! Yes, it is cute and all to tell them about why the sun is hot or where did their snack go after eating it in front of him...the point is, it's too much. And there's also the, uh, other thing with the- uh, the clothes, and the, hrm, the um, the oth-other thing, an-and...hmm...he just wants to help out by himself. It's selfish but he doesn't want to have any weird awkward conversations at school about this event during his performances in character. It breaks the mood a bit.
Also he really doesn't want others to know so they would come here and see him read, because thats a bit nerve wracking.
The first time he actually decided to do this was about...well, think about 3-4 years ago. His mom used to work as a caretaker before leaving for another job, and one time she decided to bring him along. Clearly, as a 12-13 year old, this was poison for the young chronicler. Even more so that he was told NOT to perform. What a horrifying thought; to be unable to performed in front of several people, forcing oneself to just...be their own normal self! It's just...it's just simply terrifying and unheard of! But, as the dutiful son, he obliged, and...sorry, dipped into character a bit. It's just that when you're younger you tend to find these things either fun or...boring. And since the person in charge was someone who took care of him when he was younger, he kinda had another incentive to do it. And he did it...And he . found it boring...until some kids began to ask him something. They wanted him...to read a story. Staring at them, then staring at his mom, then staring at the daycare lady, he sighs and gets off his chair and puts his phone back in his pocket. He searches through the shelves for a quick story to read to them, deciding on a classic. 3 pages in and they lost interest. So, trying to grab their attention, decided to play it up as a sort of 'show.' Voices, gestures, the usual. The kids ate it up, and he won't lie...he kinda enjoyed it. This was the last day his mom worked for them, but this was the first week of him coming by and reading. It's been 3 years, 4 years maybe, and he still likes doing it. After all, why else would he risk dying to several hyperactive kids?
But what was Karen doing here? Did she like, help out on other days? Maybe? Either way, the kids seem to like her, with some of the more rowdy being more nervous around her to act out. They still acted out, but slightly less. It makes his job easier at the very least. As Karen and the kids started to mass up inside the classroom, he sighs and and walks up to her, trying to hide his confusion (he's failing.) "Uh...hey." He nervously waves at her. "Weird, um, seeing you here..." He bobs his head around, trying to think of where to take this conversation to. He slightly mumbles, rubbing the back of his head. Daycare lady steps in to save the awkwardness. "Kazu, meet miss Hoshizora! She graciously gave some of her time to help us out earlier!" She cheerfully stated. "Y-yeah, we, uh, met. Same school." "Oh that's great! Anyway, let me just get the kids ready and I'll let you know when you can start reading. In the meanwhile, can you two help out picking up some of the left behind toys?" She smiles and leaves, guiding the rest of the children inside. "...Uh." Looking back at Karen who is clearly enjoying this form of the 'Chronicler" in front of her, Kazu places his hands in his pockets, slightly nodding to himself. "Uh...hmm...O-oh. I see you, uh, met Hideshi. Surprised he didn't make a huge mess around you. God knows he tends to do that." He jokes a little.

After the kids were all back in the classroom Karen finally found a chance to properly say hello to her fellow schoolmate. He wasn't at all his usual confident self. This made the meeting feel rather fresh. Was this what Kaz was like outside of school? Well no she had already seen Kaz before at least a couple of times. Both times he had been quite a spectacle, not that she meant anything bad by that thought. But today was definitely different and a good reference for the future. She just had to investigate. "Kaz-kun! So nice to see you!"Kaz was being a bit awkward but the daycare lady smoothed things over. She even set up a perfect opportunity to chat a bit while the kids got ready for their story time. Karen had memorized their schedule first thing this morning. From what she said, it seemed Kaz was going to be reading. That should be fun for the kids then. He had a talent for making things dramatic, at least in Karen's opinion. That sort of thing tended to work well with most children. But first, picking up toys. She didn't mind doing that but if she was the one running this place she would have insisted on teaching and making the kids themselves do it. They had to learn how to put away their own messes sooner or later. Meanwhile Kaz still looked like he wasn't sure what to make of this unexpected meeting and struggled to make a conversation. "Hideshi? Ah yes, I can see why you would say that. I did get a heads-up to keep a closer eye on him, but it wasn't too much of an issue. It's important to set the pecking order right from the start you know, while they're still unsure what to make of you. That way they don't just give you trouble. If you show them weakness, they can sense it and will act out."Karen was half-joking, but there was some truth in it. Children would typically look for authority figures to emulate and listen to in her experience. And she had the older sister persona down pat. Establishing a give and take relationship was her approach. Although it wasn't always literal. Sometimes what you gave wasn't necessarily tangible, like the feeling of trust and security. Or if things went wrong, someone to turn to. Karen's style was more psychological than material. And for the most part it worked. "So you read for the kids? Story time must get really lively. It's my first day volunteering here so I'm looking forward to it~"She kept it casual and tried not to press too hard. She didn't want to throw the storyteller off right before performing his duties. She had a feeling that she was already intruding somewhere he didn't want anyone to. But it couldn't be helped. You could chalk this up to fate being mischievous. With how irregular this was for her anyway, chances were they might not meet here again. But it would feel weird not to have a conversation when they were familiar with each other.

Oh of course it was her first day. It just had to be on this day and time, instead of all the other days and times in a week. It's not that it's bad it's just....really? Why her? He still kinda fears her, with how much she just casually keeps up a cheerful attitude. It's like she's waiting for the right moment to let it all loose and strike him down over his past mistakes. Not the first time that has happened with him, maybe more justified that the other time but...hmmmm, maybe he's just overthinking it. After all, she didn't expect him here so there's no point in assuming she intentionally picked this time to blackmail him...although that would be a weird sort of blackmail if it was. 'Oh no, people found out I read to kids, oh the agony.' Wouldn't be an effective way to blackmail someone. Sure he wouldn't like her telling others but...come on now. He can live with it.
If he were playing up the Chronicler character, he would probably deny all accusations with some long winded speech about a cool bird...aw man but what if there actually was a cool bird nearby, that'll be neat...an-anyway. If he were in character, the first thing he would do in this situation is immediately deny the purpose of why he was here. Probably something involving time, that's always a good topic to use in his speech. Perhaps sprinkle in some comments about the youth and their expanded potential, yeah that can work...hey this is some good stuff for future speeches. Really should note this down...eh, maybe later. The point is, that's what the Chronicler would do right now. But he's not in character right now, nor does he have the motive to be in it.
"Could have told me that before I got kicked in the leg" He chuckled a bit. "Yeah...I guess I should have made a better impression when he got here. He's alright though, so no worries." He rubs the back of his neck, gaining a bit of confidence but still a bit awkward. "Probably the ones you have to worry the most are the quiet ones, since those can go from, un, 1 to 100 in an instant. They can really grind the whole story time to a stop." There was this one kid, 2 years ago, who kept her mouth shut for the majority of the time he was there. Only until he started to read did she started to go on a tantrum. Normally that wouldn't be a big deal overall...but the problem was she was loud. She was surprisingly loud. His ears popped that day.
"Eeeeh, it's kinda hard to do so when you got a lot of kids moving around and not paying attention." He admits to her. "Still, guess half the fun is trying to keep them focused on you. It's kinda cute to see them all sitting down when you read to them...it's also kinda annoying when some of them keep stopping you beat for beat with random questions." He lets out a sigh and adjusts his shirt a bit. "Hopefully the ones they picked out for me to read will be good enough...hopefully." He lets out a sigh and then a chuckle. "Anyway, we should probably, you know, pick up the toys and stuff." He nudges to some of the forgotten spoils laying all over the place. "It looks cleaner than the last time I read here, that's for sure." He deadpan states, removing his other hand from his pocket.

Karen would listen to Kaz as he recounted his own experiences volunteering in the daycare. It sounded to her like he had been doing this for quite a while now. She was glad to hear though that for the most part he was having fun. She could somewhat tell that despite his 'complaints' this place was more special to him than he let on. If he had been doing this for a long time then he must have liked it. Unless he was being forced to. But she didn't get that sort of impression from how he was talking so far. It was definitely a nice side of him to know. "I didn't think you of all people would have a hard time getting children to focus on you. I suppose some of these kids are more intelligent than they look. It's the smart ones that usually talk a lot and ask a lot of questions when they encounter something they don't understand."She would chuckle a bit too. But she would admire his seriousness about this volunteer work when he would bring up that they really ought tidy up sooner so as not to keep the kids waiting too long. She would acknowledge by reaching out to the ones closest to her and then taking back to the toy box. "Of course. I guess when I told some of them earlier that they should take care of their things better, they understood it as putting away their toys once they were done playing with them. It's really mature of them."It wasn't perfect. Some habits were hard to break and those kids probably weren't used to cleaning up after themselves. But small progress was still progress. She only wished she had more time to spend with them. She wasn't sure when she would come back next after today. Still carrying on with the work, she would continue the conversation as well. "So how long have you been doing this anyway? Listening to you talk about how things are, I kind of feel like you've been volunteering for a while now. It's really commendable. I don't do this sort of thing often so it's been some time for me."Somehow as a fellow class president she felt that she lost here. That Kaz found the time in his schedule to go out and regularly engage in volunteer work was something she felt he beat her at. And she actually liked kids. Priorities were truly hard to balance.

"Eeeeeh, it's not your fault. Kids just tend to forget easily. God knows I do...well, at least you got some of them to do it. That's way better than nothing." He sighs a bit. "It's a start when it comes to them. Either you get some or none at all. So it's better to take this as a small victory." He glances over to the building, where the kids are getting ready. "Imagine how much of a pain it is when cleaning up the inside, though. Like, have you ever stepped on top of blocks? It hurts." He chuckles a bit. He was starting to change his view on having someone else volunteering during his time, since it allows him to actually, well, talk with other people. Odd that it was Karen, but she seems nice enough (or patient enough to not start something).
Picking up some toys and placing them in their proper places, he then looked a bit puzzled when she asked him about how long he's been here, but sighs a bit and gives off a small smile. "Eh, you know. Been here since...4 years ago? Technically two by my own...It just became a habit of sorts. Besides, there's nothing wrong with reading to kids. If anything, it's good prep." Prep was an odd choice of word, but it felt right. Yeah, this did feel like "prep" of sorts. Prep for entertaining people, of sorts. "If I can't entertain kids, then well...what's the point in trying to entertain other people? Not much. Gotta start somewhere, huh?" The chronicler character can be considered 'cheating' since, to be fair, he techically modeled it after his own self but pushed to the extreme. Here, though, he has a chance to actually, well...act. Not full on, but voices and other small things.
"Alright, think we're done here." He places the last of the toys near him as Karen presumably does the same as well. "Think it's about time. You coming in as well?"

They had the same thought about teaching kids though from Kaz's point of view it was more due to them forgetting easily. It probably depends on the child in question. But as someone who has seemingly been doing this longer he likely had some idea what he was talking about. Perhaps he tried to teach them something too before. Whatever it was it probably wasn't too good a memory as he recounted something about stepping on blocks being painful. She chuckled along with him when he did. "No I can't say I've ever stepped on blocks before. But I'll take your word for it being a hurting experience. I want to say it's been a long time since I've done anything that might hurt myself but unfortunately it seems enrolling in UA makes it inevitable."And she did already have quite a list of dangerous things that she would have otherwise avoided before becoming a hero student. The last one being sticking her hand close to razor sharp spinning blades. Thankfully she only got off with a few scratches there albeit the bleeding made it look worse than it actually was. Kaz replied to her question that he had been volunteering for around four years already. Assuming they were in the similar age range, he would have been 12 when he first came there. That was impressive in its own way. Twelve year old Karen had other priorities and probably didn't even have the concept of volunteering on her radar. Though he did mention it had only been two years since he started coming alone. In that case did he go here with his parents or perhaps an older sibling? She wasn't really familiar with Kaz's family structure. What he would say next however would really pique Karen's curiosity. If she understood it right, it seemed he was implying that he did the things he normally did to entertain people. That was interesting. Karen didn't have much experience with people acting out a character in daily life. She had certainly seen and met some before, but none of whom she hung around with on a more regular basis. So it wasn't as though she had ever asked such people why they did such things. Her expectation was that they would dodge the question. So Kaz talking like this was certainly intriguing to her. "I think it's great coming to volunteer to read to kids. This kind of work builds character. Even if you say it's become a habit, you haven't stopped. So I'm guessing deep down this does mean a lot to you in some way."
"And I agree. Stepping into the world of entertainment, you really have to start with kids. I mean it helps them too. Smiling and being cheerful is good for the emotional development of children."They had just about finished cleaning up by now and Kaz asked the silly question if she was coming along. It made her wonder if he still didn't like being around today. Well too bad for him. She wasn't going anywhere just yet. "Certainly. I had my whole day reserved to helping out here. Story time should be fun~"

Kazu blinks as Karen says that. Guess he said too much as to why he acts like that in school. Eh, no matter, it's not a big deal. Most people can probably infer from the way he acts alone. Besides, people love his character!* He can tell by how much they react to it.** "Eh, that's kinda pushing it. I'm just repaying someone, that's not really something to praise or rejoice...pff. Rejoice." He chuckles a bit at his slip of the tongue. "Anyway, we should...ya know." he moves his head towards the inside, and the two go in.
The kids all grouped up in a small bundle as they sat down to hear what story they have today. Kazu looks around and sighs a bit. Bit more kids here today, no wonder there were more toys laying around outside. Karen had to deal with more of the usual, how does she do it? If it were him, they would have eaten him alive just because he blinked at them wrong. But when he's reading, he already has an edge up on them...if he manages to actually grab their attention for long enough before they start talking. Kids are a fickle creature sometimes.
Kazu looks at the book he'll be reading to them. Ah a classic, Momotaro. These kids can't resist classical fairy tales. Last time they did...what was it now? Some weird translation involving a match girl...that was a bit depressing for them, so he had to quickly change it up to entertain the kids. Seriously, why make her die in the middle of christmas? Come on, man! This version of Momotaros has small illustrations and a simplified plot, as all kid versions do. It's not uncommon of and he actually likes that it has them so he can go into length as to what they're showing. Hopefully they cut down on some of the more iffy parts, Kazu notes as he flips through the book to see. Karen notes his face as he scans through the book. Hmm. I can work with this. He snaps it close and heads to the spot.
The caretaker gets their attention as Kazu sits down on a chair. He looks at the kids and readies himself. "Okay now, it's time for story time! This week's story is about the hero known as Momotaro! Does anyone know who that is?" He looks around to see anyone who knows the answer. There were only murmurs and laughs to respond to his question. "Well, Momotaro is a brave man who was born out of a peach who fought evil monsters..."
"That's not real." The troublemaker Hideshi popped in. "My older brother told me that. That's just a dumb story."
Kazu stares at him and slightly nods. Not this again. Every time he says this, this would usually devolve into him arguing with the kid. He really doesn't want to do this, so he looks around to see if anyone can help out. "Well...um...Hoshizora here has actually seen Momotaro, actually. Right Hoshi?" He stares at her hoping for hr to help him out with this. The kids appear to pay more attention to him, so maybe she can do something about it.
*Debatable. It's...it's really debatable whether they like it or not. ** It's really, really debatable...

Repaying someone? No matter how much he downplayed it, spending four years repaying someone was a pretty big deal. And it didn't feel like he was stopping anytime soon. She was curious about who was this lucky individual that earned this 'dedication' from Kaz of all people. But this wasn't the occasion to look into it now. They had kids waiting for story time and so Karen nodded and followed Kaz as he led the way back to where they were all gathered. She sat down behind the group where she could see them all. Kaz had a serious look on his face as he perused the first book that he would be reading today. Actually she wasn't sure how many stories they typically went through with each reading session. Eventually he would close the book having been satisfied with his preparation and would go on to take a seat on a chair in front of the children. He would then begin his intro revealing who the story was about and asking if anyone was familiar with it. It seemed standard enough. If anyone of the kids had said that they knew it, then he could possibly preempt some questions or comments that might come up during the reading or else tell them to keep quiet so that the rest of the class can enjoy the story spoiler free. Today's story was apparently Momotaro. It was a classic folktale. Karen knew the gist of it but the actual content tended to vary depending on the book. A children's version would likely play out more lightly in some parts of the story. She watched as the kids reacted but just when it seemed like no one had anything particular to say a voice suddenly spoke out in disinterest. It was Hideshi who claimed the story was just make believe and false. Well yes that was true but that wasn't really the point of folktales. She looked on to see how Kaz would handle it. Much to her surprise however, he passed the ball to her. It was an amusing request too. It seemed the angle he wanted to take was to use her as a pretend witness to Momotaro's existence. Well, he didn't exactly give her any time to prepare so it would be difficult to align a story. In that case she would just have to prod Hideshi instead. "Hmm, that won't do Hideshi-kun. It's not fair to Momotaro-kun to just say his story is not real. I have a senpai from my school who makes tiny little people come out from plants. And I'm sure you've seen 'monsters' while walking around town. Right everyone?"She honestly didn't want to use this as an example as it would be rude to people with mutation quirks to be called 'monsters' like that. But these were kids. Living in this current era, it was no surprise that more than a few of them have seen people that they thought were 'monsters' due to their appearance. A handful of children raised their hands to confirm that. "See? Although let me just say that not all 'monsters' are evil either. Some can be really nice. So don't just judge them for their looks. Momotaro-kun was like a hero and only fought the bad ones. I'm sure you all have your favorite heroes."She wondered if this was convincing enough for the little troublemaker. Momotaro was a hero story after all. So for kids who grew up in this society of quirks, the best way to get them to appreciate the tale was to spin it into something they could easily relate to. Now it was up to Kaz-kun to continue as Karen gestured to him to go on.

Kazu nods as he opens the book. "That's right, momotaro is just as big as any other hero around us. In fact, you could say that he's one of the oldest pro heroes around! Like...a long time ago!"
"Like when my daddy was a kid?"
Kazu pauses a bit, and muses a bit. "...Y-yeah! Momotaro was a big hero, and he was very popular! All of your parents have heard about the big hero Momotaro. This isn't just an ordinary book about him, you know. This is a real life turn of events made into a picture book for kids. But I'm sure you're all grown up to hear the real events, right?"
All the kids started clamoring, saying that they can handle the 'real life events' of the pro hero known as Momotaro. He really didn't expect this to go this way, but hey, if it's to grab their attention, then anything goes, huh? So much for reading this book, huh? "Momotaro was brought to a poor family, finding him on a river. His mother abandoned him , and the only people to come to rescue him were this old couple. He was safe, however, thanks to being covered in a peach like orb of sorts. That was his power, and the old couple was amazed and soon adopted him as their own." Kazu had to change some things around to make this new narrative make sense. First of all, he can't really say he came out of a peach. Not unless there was some sort of quirk that made them be birthed out like that. "As he grew up, he had inspirations to be a great hero to help out his poor family, and as he grew into adolescence...thats like our age." He helpfully points out to those who where confused, "he got his chance."
"For you see, there was this dangerous villain called Gashima, who lead the dangerous Onigashima gang. They were known as the the "Demon Island" for how much they took over. Many heroes tried but weren't able to stop him. Momotaro jumped into the fray with his barrier powers, wanting to make a difference." Kazu pauses a bit, trying to determine where to take this story next. "You remember this from your parents, right Hoshizora? Could you tell us what happened next?" He stares at her, wanting to include her in the reading. It wouldn't be fair if he did all the work if there were two volunteers. Plus, the kids respect (and fear) her more, so perhaps they wouldn't talk back as often.

It wasn't Karen's intention to really change the story. She merely wished to make the character of Momotaro more relatable to the children who weren't too fascinated with folktale heroes. And the most relatable thing she could use was to compare him to modern day heroes and that his own adventures involved fighting villainous monsters too. And so she didn't really expect that Kaz would proceed to alter the story altogether and try to pass it off as a real life account from long ago. In her opinion, the former was probably justifiable but the latter was honestly unnecessary. It was rather flimsy too since pro heroes didn't actually exist until last year. The kids would know immediately if they talked to anyone outside of this class. If Kaz would give her the chance to speak again, she might use that opportunity to correct things a bit. She would like to entertain the children as much as anyone but she didn't want to feed them false fantasies either. Fortunately that chance did come, although the way Kaz was setting things up he was probably intending to share the storytelling burden. Karen didn't mind too much but she would have appreciated a heads up beforehand. She was more the type to meticulously prepare for such things over improvising. But there wasn't much choice as the ball was already rolling. "Well, I'll need to correct you on one thing Kaz-kun. Momotaro-kun may have been a hero but he wasn't a pro hero. He was just someone who wanted to do some good for the world with his own hands. Nowadays you need a license for that so that you can protect people safely."She had to be sure that the kids understood as she didn't want any of them to grow up thinking that becoming vigilantes was okay. It would be bad if they would turn out to be a bad influence for them. "But alright, moving on with the story, Momotaro-kun was strong and brave. But even he couldn't fight a gang of villains by himself. And so before going to face them, he traveled around to recruit members for his own heroic team."She paused for a moment here as she pondered how to make it more dramatic to fit Kaz's setting. She didn't have too much experience making up stories on the spot so she hoped he would excuse her for her rather lackluster follow-up. She would at least try her best to make it sound like they were proper hero names. "The ones who would answer Momotaro-kun's call were the Mighty Dog, the Artful Monkey, and the High Flying Pheasant. He had promised them a reward in exchange for their assistance. You see not everyone was as brave as Momotaro-kun so they needed to be convinced somehow. Fortunately they would all agree to help and the new team would set out to defeat the notorious villains."She would gesture to Kaz to continue, passing the baton, at least until she got more ideas for what would come after. This was more challenging than she had expected.

Ah, now we're getting into the thick of it! The wonders of storytelling meant that anyone even with a passing knowledge can aid in telling a fantastical account, all to entertain the audience. Sure, these kids may have taken it off the rails, and will probably raise some eyebrows once they get home and tell them about the totally true account that was the hero known as Momotaro, but hey, who cares, they're loving it! Even those pesky little troublemakers are getting into it. All they have to do is keep this story going and make sure they don't run into any weird mistakes. "Ah yes, the trio. You know, fun fact about Mighty Dog, I heard that he was one of the first to apply for a pro hero license. Well, anyway, the team was assembled. Momo with his barrier power, Dog with his super speed, Artful with his powerful limbs and Pheasant with her jet-like wings. Together, they went towards to the main base..."
"As the 4 pass by the entrance to the Onigashima's base, there was something amiss of it. Momo turned to look at both sides. All that was left of the former vicinity- err, neighborhood, were broken down signs and scraps of food. The only source of light were the run down lamp posts, and if one were to narrow their eyes, a slight hint of an barely opened window revealing a scared family hiding.
'This is...this is terrible!' Momo yelled out, furious at the state of things.
Dog crosses his arms and smirks a little. "Well, what did you expect from a group like them? They pillage everything and everyone they see. All of them are too scared to even leave their houses. All that's left is this mess." He growls out, then looks at the young hero. "Don't tell me you're starting to get nervous now?"
Momo shakes his head as he continues on forward, now driven to end this madness even further. 'How's it looking from there, Phe?" He raises his eyes to see his companion surveying the ground below. "NOTHING, IT'S LIKE...ITS EMPTY?" She raised her voice to alert her friends, and also as bait to grab the criminals' attention.
"Ya know what this means, eh? They's waiting for us." Artful chuckled a bit, readying himself. "All waiting at the big place, right?" He directs the group's attention to a fairly large building. If the place around them was derided of color and life, then that building is the root cause of it, as if it were sucking it out for it's own amusement. "Then, we're going there!" Momo says as he grips his fist and rushes there."
He turns the page, giving off the illusion of him reading it off.
"The hideout looks completely different from inside. It was so colorful and vibrant, and yet there was something wrong with the way it was so careless and...evil. All these people, beating each other for fun and doing horrible things, just because they wanted to. They drove away so many people from their homes, and for what? For a laugh? This injustice only made Momo even madder. "DEMON ISLAND GANG ONIGASHIMA! I am the hero known as Peach Boy! I demand to seek an audience with your leader!" He yells out with a demanding voice. Some people laughed it off, with others getting off their chairs and dusting themselves off.
"Listen, kid, first tip in dealing with gangs. You DON'T ask them to meet the guy in charge." Dog rebuked him for his childish mistake. "You have to show them something in response. To prove that you are worthy." Momo pauses, then speaks once again. "Alright then...to prove that I am worthy to meet with your leader, I challenge the strongest person here to a competition! If I win, then you let us pass!" They look at each other with amused faces, then the man with a somewhat demonish appearance walks up to them, as if he elected himself as the challenger. "I challenge you to...."
Kazu paused. He was about to make it a full blown out brawl but...this is still a kid's story. Sure, fairy tales have violence in them but...he's gonna have to dial it back a little. But what kind of challenge can he do that will make usage of his fellow teammates aiding him? He can't really say "momo beat the tar out of them," he's still technically 'teaching' the kids something. "Hoshizoma, what was the challenge again? It slipped my mind." He asks his fellow volunteer, a bit sorry to drag her in this again but feeling it was necessary to complete the story. All the ideas he had were more for an older audience, so perhaps he needs someone else's touch to make this story more fitting for children.

The story really had taken a turn for the unusual. Kaz was determined to go through with his twist on the tale and Karen stood by wondering when he intended to pass it on to her again. On the bright side, the improvisation had done a good job of keeping the children's attention and interest. She knew he could do it. That was definitely the kind of talent she expected from Kaz. But at the same time she pondered if all story times were like this. He seemed to have implied they were more troublesome. Then again on other times he didn't have any support from a fellow volunteer. The setting had changed from an island to a ruined neighborhood. And even the characters had quite unique personalities tacked onto them. Though perhaps she didn't agree with making Momotaro a bit on the naive side. In the original tale he was the voice of reason who kept the party together and the bravest of them all. Well this was Kaz's story. Perhaps he had a plan to make him more respectable in the end. So far there were no complaints or questions from the kids anyway. Maybe having a more flawed hero was more relatable than she thought. In that case Kaz was a genius for thinking so. With the inevitable conflict between the hero and villain party, Kaz would pick this time to pass the baton to Karen. She thought for a moment why he would do so. Thinking on it, this would usually be the part where they would fight it out but maybe Kaz thought that was a bit much for the children. It was difficult trying to read people's intentions but if he wasn't going for the obvious execution then she wanted her to think of something else. But what would fit this new hero setting anyway? It had to be believable but also exciting. "Hmm. Well Momotaro-kun was confident in his own and his comrades' strengths. So he would challenge the villains to team sumo. They would draw a large ring on the ground big enough for the representatives of both teams to enter. The side with all of their members forced out of the ring would lose."Karen felt that a 'peaceful' challenge was not going to cut it here so something akin to a 'fight' was still necessary. But at least in this case the condition for winning didn't involve beating up and incapacitating the other. It was up to Kaz now to get creative with it.

"Thanks again, Hoshirzora!" He gives off a small smile at her, then continues the story. Think he can start going for the ending now that he has the set up.
Momo pauses, then speaks once again. "Alright then...to prove that I am worthy to meet with your leader, I challenge the strongest person here to a competition! If I win, then you let us pass!" They look at each other with amused faces, then the man with a somewhat demonish appearance walks up to them, as if he elected himself as the challenger. "I challenge you to the test of strength! I challenge you...to Sumo!" The crowd became silent. The strongest looking one smirks at him. "Young boy, are you daft?" Momo crosses his arms. "You have pillaged and plunder for far too long. I won't let you get your way again. So, come on! let's do this!"
The gang members and Pheasent start drawing a circle. Dog and Artful were giving Momo some tips on how to win.
Some kids chuckle a bit. Yeah, he expected this, especially with the stereotype of sumo nowadays. "You know how Sumo usually is, right?" Kazu takes a side note. "Well, the idea of having huge bodies isn't exactly right. Sometimes...people that look like, for example, Me or Hoshizora can compete in sumo challenges and even win. It all depends on skill, you know."
Soon after, the circle was drawn. The largest orge-looking man readies himself and enters the circle. Momo does so too. The two lock eyes at each other, preparing their postures. He doesn't want to start a huge brawl in here, so he better win, thought Momo to himself. He huffs his chest to make a good impression, as the orge man cracks his neck. Dog stands outside the ring, preparing to start the match. It was clear to both of them that this would be a quick match. The only thing, however, was who was going to win. Orge Man had the strength and the size to overcome the young man. Momo, however, had skill and tenacity. His determination to see this through, to get back all of the homes for the people that lost them to this gang, that is what empowers him.
With a wave of his hand, Dog commences the duel. The two rush at each other. It was a swift battle between our hero and the brute. The orge man's strength was immeasurable, and yet that same strength was something that Momo could use against him. With every thrust he pushes himself even further near the border. All he has to do is keep dodging, then with one single push, the game is his. This is a test of stamina and skill, one that Momo is determined to win. And so, by ducking and stepping out of the way, the man gets more tired and tired, and with all of his might, Momo pushes the man out of the ring, winning the match!
Of course this provoked the crowd. After all, they expected them to win. But as they were about to fight, a voice was heard. "Well, well, well, You bested my strongest warrior." It was him, the leader of all of this. The cause of everyone's suffering. It was...Gashima. He walks down the stairs, almost laughing with every step he took. "There you are, the star of the show. Tell me, when you came here did you expect me to to leave so suddenly if you asked nicely?" Momo closes his eyes. "...Of course not." He opens them again, with furrowed brows. "Even I know people like you won't listen to reason. But that doesn't mean that you have to do this."
A howling laughter arises from Gashima. "DON'T HAVE TO DO THIS? BUT THAT'S THE BEST PART! Here, I can do ANYTHING I want to! With my strength, everyone has to bow down to us! Everything is ours for the taking! Is that so wrong? To want something? To grab it with your hands!? To prove to those weaklings that you are better than them! I don't have to do this, but I WANT to. That is my choice. The same reason why you are here. Because you want to stop me."
Momo readies up, brimming with confidence. "And we are going to stop you. Let's go, guys." Everyone readies up for the final confrontation. Gashima cracks his hands as green goo emerges from his body. This was it.
Kaz 'turns' the page only to look at the clock. Crap, it's almost time to switch over to a new book. He spent too much on describing things. That sucks, though. He had like a whole set up involving the power of friendship and also a cool fight involving lazers. He can't just leave things here...but he can't also just spend all of the time doing this. There's gotta be variety.
"...And that's it for all." All the kids groaned. "Now, now, I know that you want to hear the end. But trust me, this is something that you need to hear in full. Otherwise I'll just have to, ya know, rush through it. And we don't want that, right?" Some kids agreed, Hoshizora appeared to be puzzled and/or amused. Kaz gets up and grabs another book near her. "Can't spend all day 'reading' this, otherwise we'll be here all day." He joked.
He grabs another book, this time intended to actually stick with the original plot. And, to his surprise, he did. It was a usual tale, with the usual voices and the usual questions. But in his mind, he was a bit enamored with the concept of making old stories into a modern twist, or at the very least the momotaro myth. It was a novel idea. Thanks, Hideshi. Your complaining helped me after all.
The time passes, the story read. It was about time. Some kids were getting tired. He finishes up the story and places it down. "Alright, guess that's all for today." The kids talked among themselves, some thanking him and asking him to come back. He gets up and goes near Karen again. "Well. Hopefully you were also entertained as well." He mutters under his breath so the kids wouldn't hear and start talking again.
