Lacing up her boots, Yumi was till wearing her little military cosplay, Aki had given it a thumbs up on her way out the door, but perhaps the red head shouldn't have just checked with her socially inept (not to be rude) roomate. Maybe a doublecheck with whoever slept in the room next to hers would have been a good bit of protocol before coming here. Luckily, it had gotten as many good reactions as bad ones. The rather revealing upper half of a bikini top and a mid-waist utility belt had caught the eyes of many guys who were glad for the view while they weren't on any official form of duty or deployment, while more strict officers and the female officers (some of them at least) had seen it as a mockery of the military, perhaps more than this 'open day' already was. She stood up, adjusting the shades she had on her head in replacement of the linked image's headset, and moved on to check out this little rescue display. It was certainly unique, and while Yumi had no intention of joining the military, it was certainly interesting to check out. She might even try it out if she changed into her hero clothes real quick. She'd packed them in the duffle bag she was wearing across her shoulder, the boots and gauntlets weighing her down a bit but not too much since she'd been putting so much effort into exercizing lately. Her eyes drifted to those already using the training facilities, watching those with unique quirks compete against the trained skills of those in the military. It was suprising how random the outcomes could be. Quirk users who could breath under water, or were practically fish, could sometimes come out on top in diving rescues, but other times, the trained skill of the military had them succeeding on rescuing the 'civilians' more succesfully by keeping the dummies in a much better condition. Yumi couldn't do any of those of course, what with her quirk's basis meaning she'd never really learned how to swim until recently, but she was eager to try something out...she didn't wanna do it alone incase she made a fool of herself though... Lucky for her, a certain spec of blonde caught her attention, and suddenly she was rushing towards her, the strap of her dufflebag snapping between her loosely held breasts and briefly making her jolt as she jogged over, the force against her ribs weirdly hard-hitting, but luckily still holding her breath by the time she was jumping against Darren's back, giving the rugged boy who'd been her first friend at UA a big hug from behind, feeling like she hadn't seen him on his own in forever. "DARREEEEEEN!~"

This military exposition was bigger than Darren had expected. He wasn’t quite sure why it was held in the first place either. Something about quirks, as usual. Everyone seemed to define Quirked people by their quirks, except for other quirked people. It was one of the reasons Darren liked U.A. High. The only non-quirked person in U.A. High was the principal, and he dispensed one hell of a P.E. class. The blondie wasn’t quite sure if he could win in a quirkless spar against him, so he decided not to think about it.
But right now, Darren had wandered in the rescue area. Cian-sensei’s rescue classes weren’t his favorite, on account of the fact that Darren enjoyed punching people much more than he enjoyed rescuing them, but it was alright with him. He was in hero school because the job looked fun, and catching damsels in distress wasn’t so terrible a way to earn a living.
As such, the voice of reason inside him that was so often silenced made itself heard for once and he decided to check out the rescue area. See how the pros were doing it. Lots of fishmen and people with water-based quirks were challenging the army divers, but Darren had another target in mind.
Before he could do anything about it, however, he was interrupted by an excited voice and a pair of personalities pressed themselves against his back. The voice was calling his name, and he recognized its high pitch and characteristic playfulness. The voice made him smile.
“Hey there, prez. Spirited as ever, I see.” He turned around to face her. “Damn, I feel it’s been forever since we went to that burger place. I’ve been busy, you understand, what with the martial arts club and shark men coming out for under my feet,” he humblebragged. He looked her up and down, thought of a funny comment to make about her outfit. Yumi Tatsukai liked to dress up, as long as it involved as little fabric as possible. He thought of one.
“You know, the point of camouflage is supposed to be that you ain’t seen when you’re wearing it, not to draw attention to yourself. Though then again, I guess clothes never stay on your back for so long,” he snickered. Her quirk made it that the redhead often ended up in her underwear, but she didn’t seem to mind. Darren sure didn’t.
“You’re coming to check out the rescue stuff too?” He waved in the general direction of the water. “See, all them fish niqqas are tryna compete with them divers. It’s well and good, to each his own, but I’m aiming for something higher.”
He pointed with his chin behind Yumi, on the landing area where a few rescue helicopters were parked, and then he pointed at the sky with his index finger. “My quirk is the quirk that will pierce the heavens! And dunk on these helicopter nibbas.” He put as much bravado in his voice and pose as he could. He had bravado by the truckload.
“What about you, prez? Who are you planning to dunk on today? I sure hope you’re not just counting on these two to impress them army boys,” he added with a quick telling look and the shit eating grin he was starting to be known for.

Hopping off his back as he turned around, her chest lightly bouncing just as she came into his view as she righted her balance, she rested her hands behind her back, linking her fingers together and balancing on the heels in a little cutesie pose. She always enjoyed Darren's company, as briefly as she'd gotten it since their first days of class. She'd really only hung out with him in groups since, but she didn't mind at all! He'd left such a strong first impression on her that he'd just never left Yumi's mind. Sure maybe they sat somewhat close together and that helped, but honestly, if she HAD voted for a vice president, it would have been him. Maybe she should hang out with him more to make sure she wasn't assuming too much, but...damn she just felt like he was on her wavelength and she didn't even hang out with him that much.
She needed more info, and to just like, hang with him in general, and this was a good chance to!~
"Its been waaaaaay too long. I've been to that place a few times since, but clearly you've been having more interesting things going on! How on earth did you get roped into that shark man thing? I only saw like, the last few minutes of the livestream but you were kicking ass!" A thought occurred to her, and she rested her fingertips against her chin, cocking her hips with her free hand resting on them as she spoke. "You didn't get in trouble with the principal did ya? He tends to be strict on that sorta stuff but I can't imagine it'd be anything but good press for this hero training program that you managed to fight a damn shark dude!~"
At the cheeky comment, she lightly jabbed his shoulder, knowing he was strong enough to take it in stride before folding both her arms under her chest, rolling her eyes and looking off to the side, not realizing how she was inadvertantly puffing her chest up a little. "Well a good troop knows when to divert attention so the squad can get to safety, or in this case, so the squad can enjoy a little treat!~" Actually feeling kinda bold thanks to Darren's 'compliment' (yeah Darren she takes your tease as a compliment deal with that) she hooked her thumbs into her bikini straps, hoisting it up before letting the straps snap back against her shoulders, smirking cheekily as she showed off more than a little. A change from her usual demeanor, but something about Darren brought out her teasing side over her friendly side. Maybe it was just her being competitive with his own teasing.
"As for why I'm here...I'm not exactly one for rescue work in the water as I'm sure you can imagine...you?" She followed his gestures as he answered, spotting the helicopters and smirking a little. She'd wanted to get a ride in one of those if she could convince one of the pilots, but Darren certainly seemed a little more serious. She wondered what his quirk could do, but it hit her brain like a train, slamming a fist into her palm downward as she realized. "OH yeah! Your quirk'd be great in the air right!?" She admired his bravado, but just picturing him was like-pssssh. Explosion sound.
"Just picture you leaping out of a helicopter, momentum jumping onto something else midair and rescuing a passanger! You'd be awesome up in the sky!" She grinned wide, picturing his jagged momentum bursts as far more impressive than sheer flight or the like. At the question back to herself she had to think for a second, but smiled brightly. "I kinda like our rescue classes, but water and air...well I'm not so good...heh." She opened and closed her hands, her fingertips sparking. She'd been gaining some control lately, but she was in no way brave enough to go full electro in the presence of others, just small sparks like this.
"Unless I become a living defibrillator, I ain't exactly designed to rescue am I?"

Talking with Yumi was so easy. At first, it was disconcerting; most girls reacted more like Melody did to his general attitude, so if he didn’t want to make them hate him, he had to adjust a little. But with Yumi, he didn’t have to. Once he adjusted to not having to adjust, it was like talking to an old friend.
Best of all, Yumi could be teased and she teased right back when she wasn’t the one doing the teasing outright. She was always dressed in what teachers, parents and other lame people called an indecent fashion. Darren didn’t see the problem with that, especially when Yumi was always so ready to put on a little display and slap her bra straps on her boobs, blessing the eyes of men and gay women and everything in between everywhere around the world.
The conversation naturally drifted on their quirks, and once she realized what he meant, she came up with an even better idea. “God damn! You’re right!” He held an excited fist in front of him. “You gave me a great idea,” he said. “A great fucking idea. The greatest I ever had. I’m gonna jump from one helicopter to another! Come on, help me convince the pilots, you have all the arguments right there on display.” He didn't have to shoot a glance know, she knew what he meant.
“And then, we’ll go to the weapons area. They got a railgun here, I’ve been thinking of your quirk since I saw it. Imagine, you could power your own god damn personal rail gun. That shit would be fucking awesome. And these sparks weren’t half bad. Hey, maybe you could actually be a defibrillator when you can control it. I’m counting on you if a villain stops my heart,” he smirked.
Damn. It really was easy talking to Yumi, so easy that his bad habits reared their ugly nose and he started to wonder if he was talking too much. Then, he had a great idea, and the words escaped his mouth before he could do anything about it.
“Oooooh, you think they would drop us here? Shit, you think they will let us parachute drop? That would be amazing. Cause then, I could catch you, and we don’t even need the parachutes, you’ll see, it’s fucking awesome!”
Of course it sounded fucking awesome to the kid who was born with the kinetic quirk, but he wasn’t considering that, for most people, even quirked ones, skydiving without a parachute sounded very much like a one-way ticket to Hell, or Heaven, or wherever people deluded themselves into thinking they’d end up.

Yumi burst into snickers into her hands as Darren got so excited by the idea of leaping between nearby helicopters, but Yumi suddenly went even bigger. "Hey if being a hero dosn't workout-!" She suddenly slipped up against his side, gesturing out infront of them with a wide spread of her hands like she was presenting an impressive title as she tried to sell the idea in her head like she was pitching it to the star himself, which she was!~ "Darren the Daredevil! Watch as this expert of momentum leaps between fucking jet planes!" She snickered loudly, knowing his quirk was probably nowhere near that level yet, but it was fun to picture all the same.
Of course it was just a silly idea, and Yumi soon slipped out of his side and turned to face him again, giggling just a little into her hand as she calmed down, the idea of Darren being some daredevil actually growing stronger, and now picturing him in one of those get ups you saw old daredevils in, the sort of white jumpsuit with american stripes. Yeah he didn't suit that at all...which made it even funnier!~
"I dunno if I could convince the pilots, but hey, they're wanting to see what quirkers can do, so maybe they'd be open to it...assuming you're fine with signing like, a dozen fucking waivers.~" She smirked, knowing Darren probably wouldn't wanna do paperwork just to end up doing something awesome, cocking her hips a little to seem extra cheeky about it.
The talk of the railgun made Yumi's eyes grow, she'd seen it once on a previous day, but the idea of charging the thing herself was so damn awesome! It'd probably make her sick to power something so big, but hot damn, firing one of the pinnacles of sci-fi weaponry herself!? She didn't even know what a real world railgun could do, but to picture herself being the one behind it? Fuck that was awesome. "That sounds like a plan my man, we'll make a day of it. Hey with a guy like you buddying up with me maybe I'll get less army buffs trying to flirt~" She gently shoved a hand against the other guy's chest. "Consider it payment in advance for when I DO end up having to restart your heart.~" She playfully winked before turning to walk with him a little, hearing about the skydiving and...well she wasn't confident enough to even jump with a parachute.
"Er...ya know I havn't a clue..." She gulped a bit, realizing that wasn't a 'lets not do this' in any form and gesturing to the people running the choppers. "I mean if you wanna ask..." She considered trying to say they shouldn't do this but...honestly she'd been facing a lot of fears and uncomfortable things lately. "Thought to be clear, if they do, im wearing a parachute as like, a double safety measure...I trust you for sure but...yeah."

“You’re god damn right I’m gonna jump on the back of jet planes,” he boasted wildly, knowing well that he wasn’t even faster than a galloping horse. He had been working on his power output and control lately but it wasn’t enough. Some students were beginning to be able to do impressive things with their quirks, but his hadn’t evolved much. That needed to change, and fast. Akane was getting a lot of practice in with her at the martial arts club.
After plastering herself on his side, she turned on her heels to face him again and mentioned paperwork. Maybe she was trying to discourage him. Little did she know that Darren has had to come to grips with a lot of paperwork recently. He had founded the martial arts club, or rather had been forced to found it by the principal who also piled the paperwork that came with the leadership of a club on top of his head. The principal was one of the few people who could force Darren to do anything, the only other one being his mother.
“Oh, of course I’m gonna have to sign a ton of shit, if they even let me. I think they’d be scared that I’d hit the rotor and get cut in half. Pfft. I bet they’ll take me for an amateur,” he said, wounded pride in his tone. He really had to work on his quirk.
Yumi responded quite excitedly to his idea of having her shoot the railgun. She proposed to make a day of it and to make Darren her anti-flirting bodyguard. A voice in the back of his head told him that was a boyfriend; he chased it away, narrowly avoiding flustering himself. One couldn’t help but slip from time to time in front of Yumi. Blood rushed in all the wrong places and made thinking very hard.
He managed to keep it under wraps and in his pants, and for now, the conversation continued. Of course, Darren was trying to impress him with his wild ideas of jumping off without a parachute. “I don’t actually mean without a parachute, they’ll never let us jump without a parachute. I mean we don’t need to use it. I catch you, and I slow us down with my quirk,” he said as if it was the most natural thing in the world. Aware that it wasn’t the most natural thing in the world, he added: “It sounds scary, looks scary and feels scary, but don't you worry none, I’ve got it down to a bloody science, I did it before.” He did it before with mannequins, but he beamed with confidence all the same.
“Come on. We land without a parachute, we shoot a railgun, we put on shades and we walk away while I play cool explosion music on my phone. You can’t tell me that doesn’t sound awesome! Chalk it up to uh, hero practice, yes? If you’ll have to restart my heart, I will probably have to catch you fall once or twice,” he argued with a sly smile. He jabbed her back in the shoulder, lightly, pushing without hitting. “Please help out a classmate with his training, president?”
He put on the most innocent smile he had available on his face. It wasn’t very innocent at all.

Right so Darren wasn't backing down from this at all. Danger was probably never something that could hold him back, but damn, now paperwork couldn't stop him either? Yumi was really screwed. She was glad he was getting excited but the fact she was getting wrapped into this too...? The idea of plumetting to her death and NOT pulling the chord that could save her life just so Darren could have an awesome moment wasn't good. She trusted Darren with her life even with how little time they spent together...she just...didn't trust literally giving him that option. Like sure, save her from a bullet, but ask her to literally treat him like the bungie rope stopping her from falling into the underworld and maybe she wasn't so eager to actually go through with this.
Still, the way he was talking, he was definitely confident in his odds of handling this, and while he implied he'd handled this before Yumi wasn't in the right state of mind to actually question when he'd done such a dangerous thing. She kinda hoped he hadn't saved someone from a pre-planned fall cause that meant he'd put someone's life at risk before hers...then again the idea of someone falling to begin with wasn't too nice either way.
...Still, something in her wasn't really letting her say no. She looked ahead to the boys running the helicopters, and subtly caught a camo pattern parachute off in the distance getting deployed. Guess jumping from choppers was definitely on the menu then...come on Yumi. You'd came here, faced your fears, got control of your quirk, you were pushing yourself, putting yourself in water again, heck you were activating your quirk PERIOD. Remember when that was something you wouldn't even dare to do unless your life was in danger!? Now you used it for a fucking game of tag, was trusting someone else's quirk for a once in a lifetime experience all that different...
Yumi didn't know why she did it, but she turned, and punched against Darren's shoulder. Her nerves had just gone wild, but as she shook off her fist, pretty fucking sure she'd hurt her hand more than she'd hurt him, she looked up to him with a borderline manic grin, but even with the mania, it was clear she wanted this. "Okay...that's pre-emptive payback incase I end up dying!~ Let's do this!~"
She was clearly just teasing, and started jogging over towards the soldiers running the choppers. Yumi didn't usually use her body to get what she wanted (except that one time with Aki she REALLY wanted cotton candy) but with a confident smile, beyond a level even Darren had experienced, she cocked her hips to the side and lifted her chin a little. "Hey soldiers~ Any chance of me and my buddy here getting on the next flight?~"

The blonde boy narrowed his cold blue eyes, scrutinizing Yumi. His suggestion that she trust him to be the one to stand between her and Death itself seemed to have thrown her for a loop. She seemed to be doubting herself, to be arguing inside her head, the same way he used to argue with himself for ages about how to behave in front of the girl, before he decided to just act like he would in front of any other girl. It had worked so well that he wondered how he could have been so dumb not to do so in the first place.
He almost impressed himself. He figured that it was usually Yumi who dragged people out of their zone of comfort kicking and screaming, not the other way around.
Maybe it was more accurate to say the redhead with the big personalities invaded people’s comfort zone. Now that he thought of it, he was the one who dragged them out kicking and screaming, and although Yumi neither kicked or screamed, it certainly started to feel like it to him.
But then, he suddenly ate a punch to the shoulder. He was surprised, maybe even a bit startled. Yumi’s light teasing jabs were usually light teasing jabs; this was a real punch. He rolled his shoulder reflexively to absorb the impact; and even if Yumi wasn’t especially a powerhouse, he felt it enough that he also felt the need to rub his shoulder, more out of surprise than injury. His eyes opened wide, this time definitely in surprise.
The girl seemed to have reached a conclusion, and although she still sounded a bit unsure, there was a fire in her eyes he didn’t have the heart to snuff out. She was grinning madly, exactly like he did in the one good picture of his face the journalists had taken the other day. The two adolescents really were peas in a pod sometimes.
“You can always pull the cord if ya don’t trust me,” he said evenly. But Yumi was already gone, so he followed.
She was using her charms, and it worked. When he trotted to her side, a flustered helicopter pilot was trying to explain that she had to sign the waiver. Darren grabbed the waiver out of his hands. “Yeah yeah, give me that shit, he said,” and scribbled his last name in Roman letters. He handed it to Yumi with a smirk. “Your turn, prez.”
And with a few signatures, they were off… To a tent, where they were both told to put on jumpsuits and reminded of the origins of the word. They explained at length how parachutes functioned. They each had two parachutes, a main one and an emergency one in case the main one didn’t open. “And me in case none of them open,” whispered the blondie to his red-headed companion of misfortune with a snicker.
“Alright,” said the instructor, “if there are no more questions, then please head to the helis outside and strap on. Don't do anything stupid."
Outside the tent, the screaming turbine of a fat Bell UH-1 of a helicopter drowned out all other noises. Its rotating airframe was slicing the air fast, but not fast enough. It had no doors to the side; you were supposed to strap yourself in by the belt so you wouldn’t fall. The machine laid on the dirt like a beached whale; it was difficult to imagine it leaving the ground.
“IF YOU WANNA PUSSY OUT, LAST CHANCE RIGHT THERE,” shouted Darren, barely heard over the deafening noise.

Yumi's confidence remained even as she was shown the waiver she had to sign, taking it peacefully off Darren, but clearly rushing to sign it as she even rested the clipboard against his chest when she did just to get a steadier platform to sign off on. Her chest was feeling a little tight but the sensations of potential regret and genuine excitement were mixing too much at this point for either one to be clear over the other. All the same she was internally gritting her teeth and pushing through both sensations to try and get herself to cross the line here and just...enjoy an advantage of having a friend with a power like Darren's.
Of course, in her hyper state she hadn't thought to realize the damn fact they'd be sitting through an instruction lesson first. Entering the tent she was thankful for the brief warmth since her skin was feeling oddly cold, but the longer she waited the more chances she had to overthink things. She listened carefully of course, knowing she had to know this if, for any reason, Darren couldn't make it to her mid-air. She trusted him to do it fully, of course. She didn't doubt his quirk could handle it in the slightest...she just needed to remind herself constantly, that yes, this was the one guy who could do mid-air dashes, and if her video games told her anything, those were pretty fucking essential to save you from death. They were also the bane of cup-head reviewers, but that was a different situation entirely and a very old meme.
When they finally got into their jumpsuits and were ready to head up to the chopper, Yumi briefly froze, her hands in tight fists in the pockets of her jumpsuit, staring at the spinning blades of the chopper...somehow that suddenly became an issue and she didn't even know how. It wasn't like she'd somehow jump 'up' out of a plane and hit them but her nerves were just overwhelming her on multiple levels. She swallowed hard though, pushing it down like she was dis-discharging her entire body, filling herself with the sensation she got when she drained her batteries from a heavy electrical outburst, and stepped closer, nodding to Darren's shouted words and heading past him to hop into the back seats of the chopper, cupping her hands and yelling back to him.
"LETS DO THIS!"
With the two of them seated the chopper would start to ascend with maybe one or two other passangers who were arranged to jump with them, Yumi sat right up next to Darren, feeling like they had to jump out at the same time too even though they'd been advised by the instructor to go one after another to avoid midair collisions since they weren't used to this. As the chopper got higher, and the base dissapeared below the view the window provided, Yumi didn't even realize she was clutching Darren's hand in the space between their legs, trying to breathe slow...the higher she got the more she knew she didn't have an option here anymore, but just as one of the more iconic views surrounding the base dissapeared too and they really started to climb, Yumi's grasp turned to a soft squeeze as she turned from fear to an odd level of excitement. The soldier who was giving them a final chance to stay in the chopper and take the safe way down was making sure they were all ready before he opened the doors, and Yumi just turned her eyes to Darren, and gave him a bright, assured smile.

“LET’S DO THIS!” Yumi shouted back. So she was in. They boarded the helicopter, and a soldier made sure that they were attached properly. The helo had internal sliding doors, but they slid easily and couldn’t be relied on; they were just here to make the ride a little more comfortable, with less air blaring in your face and less noise as the steel whale steadily gained altitude.
The little sliding door had little windows, out of which Darren peered out. The ground was getting farther and farther, and soon they weren’t over ground anymore but water and the private explained that they were gonna land in the ocean and a boat would pick them up, simulating a maritime rescue. He showed them the self-inflating floaters on their parachute vests, and which cord to pull to inflate them. He also reminded them of which cord activated the mail parachute and which cord opened the emergency one.
After a while, the private opened the sliding door, offered them one last chance to bitch out. Darren did not take it. He returned Yumi’s confident smile back and shouted moderately loud -- the helicopter equivalent of whispering -- in her ear: “I go first! I slow down and I catch you!” He smiled and nodded at the private as well, who started to count to three. Darren confidently stepped out at two.
“Whooooooo!” was the first thing he said. It was an 700 meters jump, and he had never jumped that high. He opened his arms and legs wide to slow himself down. They were supposed to jump one after the other so that they would land close to each other, in the regular scenario in which they both deployed their parachutes.
He started to activate his quirk, blue electricity-like energy cracking off his skin harmlessly as he killed the momentum before he gained any. He had never jumped from so high, but he had jumped from a building before and the trick was the same. Momentum accumulated exponentially. He just had to kill it regularly with his quirk before he gained so much that he couldn’t cancel it. As such, he fired regularly, every few seconds at varying intensities.
With a twist of the hips, Darren turned himself around to catch his partner, whom if she had jumped after him was probably getting closer to Darren’s wide opened arms. Hugs weren’t usually the delinquent’s style, but they were quite effective at catching free-falling red-headed class presidents and their personalities, likely being subjected to the laws of physics as well in eye-pleasant ways.

With the doors opening and the strong gusts suddenly filling the helicopter, Yumi unbuckled herself ready to move, holding one of the handles on the ceiling of the chopper, wanting to make sure she had a tight grip and didn't move till she had to. Darren's guidance was sound enough, and by now Yumi was mentally committed to this ludicrous idea one hundred percent. She looked to him, giving him an assured smile and waiting for the man to count down, only to watch Darren jump out mid count. Feeling this was part of the plan, despite her heart briefly stopping in some weird sense of fear (like he was gonna jump anyway, why did doing it early put the fear of god into her at all?) she waited for the rest of the countdown, then jumped herself.
She was far less graceful to say the least.
Her brain related this jump to all other jumps from high places she'd ever done, and as such, instinctively tucked itself into a cannonball shape for a few dozen feet until she realized just how wrong that position probably was. She tried to spread herself out and inadvertently ended up doing a backflip as the air caught her, waving out her arms in a wobbly fashion till she managed to stabilize herself, and even when she did, she'd blame it more on the strong winds whipping past her just forcing her to remain stable since it made moving at all such an odd effort.
She could see Darren down below her, and he was rapidly approach as his own momentum was killed. At this point Yumi could start to register the ground actually getting closer, and despite the trust, she couldn't help but shut her eyes, grit her teeth, and just hope Darren grabbed her soon, and slowed her down quickly after that.
She just remembered a surprisingly soft impact and arms wrapping around her before she opened her eyes again, still falling, but now holding desperately onto her quirking partner, her eyes on that borderline between fear and excitement, shouting as loud as possible just so she could be heard.
"YOU DO REALIZE THIS IS STILL FUCKING CRAZY RIGHT!?"

And there was Yumi.
She was a little less graceful, a lot less even, but when Darren saw her come out of the helicopter and cannonball towards him, he couldn’t help but feel a tinge of respect for the redhead. It was not everyone who accepted to go skydiving without a parachute and trust their delinquent classmate with their lives, and with so little protestation too. He smiled, happy that there was at least another person in UA as unhinged as he was, besides Hayley.
He kept activating his quirk regularly, well aware that if he let himself catch too much momentum, he'd die. Yumi, who did not have a quirk that allowed her to laugh in the face of physics, was getting a lot closer now. She had stopped cannonballing and started flopping. It was a relative improvement. The delinquents tweaked his positions and his activations of Autokinesis to place himself on the girl’s trajectory and caught her.
He immediately wrapped his arms around her, caring little about decency now as his right arm found itself strewn across her chest. He recognized the soft sensation but paid it no mind, grabbing hold of one of her parachute straps. He had to get a good hold on her fast and start braking again, or they’d die. “YES! GRAB ON TO ME!” he shouted back.
With another twist of the waist, he put himself below the class president and activated his quirk again, the blue electricity crackling off his skin and bouncing off Yumi’s harmlessly.
What was more harmful was the braking itself, which exposed the pair to brutal G-forces. Darren was used to it, but Yumi wasn’t, which was the reason he placed himself underneath her. He served as a cushion so that his friend would only feel like he was pushing her suddenly with his whole body when he activated his quirk every three-four seconds, despite having no ground to push from. Such was the weird and wonderful world of the absolute freedom of movement that Autokinesis granted Darren.
Six hundred meters now. Soon it was five hundred. The two adolescents were past the point where you normally opened the chute, but they were falling much, slower than humans should, as if they were made of abnormally light materials and their bones were hollowed-out like those of birds. A closer examination would yield that they were, in fact, falling perfectly normally, save for the fact that forty or so kilometers per hour were regularly shaven off their speed in a spark of electricity. It was a bumpy ride for sure, but not a deadly one, though it certainly felt like one.
The vast expanse of blue below was getting closer and closer, but their speed was staying roughly the same. They were getting into the four hundreds now, and Darren was getting a little tired from using his quirk so much, but he held on tight. He had plenty of fuel to burn still, and worst comes to worse, he thought, they could still deploy the chutes, as they were falling down slow enough to afford opening them at much lower altitudes.
Adrenaline was flooding the young delinquent’s brain, honing his concentration. I’m gonna make it, he told himself. I’m gonna fucking get us to the ground in one piece and it’s gonna be awesome. Three hundred meters to the ground. Two hundred. One hundred and fifty.
At one hundred and fifty, Darren started using more activations to kill their speed further. He was now producing swat as well as electricity-like energy. He was drained. Slowing himself down was one thing, but the added weight of Yumi had him pull an extra effort he didn’t fully anticipate. He usually thought that the class president didn't have a superfluous kilo on her and that each and every single one of them was filled with love, happiness and all that was good in the world, but right now, he sure wished she could shave off about fifty-two of em', if that wasn't too much trouble, please and thank you very much.
One hundred meters. Darren put out all the stops now, firing his quirk wildly. At fifty meters to the ground, they were almost stopped; for a second, everything looked still, and it almost was. Gravity did its job however and pulled them down.
The blondie figured he had two activations left in him by now. He used one at twenty-five meters. At ten meters from the water, he used his last one and let go of his partner, shouting: “FEET FIRST! LAND FEET FIRST! LIKE A PENCIL DIVE!”, the point being to ease her entry into the water. It was effectively a free fall from a height of ten meters instead of eight hundred, and it had cost Darren everything.
With this last activation, they were completely stopped. Darren’s stomach felt like it was upside down, and he had no strength left in him to speak off. He flopped down into the water against his own advice and made a big splash.
Oh shit, he thought. I’m not sure I can swim up after that.
He mustered every single bit of strength he had left. The blue electricity was just as harmless underwater; it was not really electricity, but leftover kinetic energy manifesting itself as such, the doctors explained. He propelled himself up one last time, and his right hand pierced above the surface of the water for a second, but he had nothing left. The water pulled him down again.
I might have bitten off more than I could chew, he thought, oddly calm for someone who was about to drown.

Yumi's heart was pounding fast and her sense of time here was all but vaporized, the only sensations getting any sort of true response was the wind whipping around her and the shouts from Darren. Feeling him cling around her, she did the same to him, practically bear hugging him, falling about a hundred feet with just her arms clutching onto his back before her legs joined in two, coccooning him in her arms and legs in a tight squeeze, not enough to hurt, but enough to make her weight and presence easily known, especially with the exertion of his quirk.
With the feet passing and passing, and the weird slow downs making Yumi's stomache turn in a way she was trying heavily not to focus on, her mind was racing and at some points she was pretty sure she was forgetting to breathe. Before she knew it Darren Release her and the last stop jerked her arms loose. She was out of arms reach of her fall buddy, and she could only hear his advice. Pencil dive!? The hell was a pencil dive!? Spotting the water beneath them, her brain let her feel a sense of relief. The mere fact it wasn't ground was good enough to raise her odds of survival, but truth be told she'd been expecting them to land together? Her brain skipped the questions around that as she just tried to remember some advice from an old cartoon, not realizing it was indeed a pencil dive. She held her arms up, her legs down straight, and pierced the water like a reverse diver.
For a brief second or two she may have passed out. All she felt was a harsh impact, and then pressure all around her, like a step or two had been skipped inbetween where the water would crash back in around her body. Against her better instincts, she opened her eyes in the water, the world slowing down from a million miles an hour to something from a matrix movie. Her red hair had come loose of her usual ponytail from the impact, her eyes shifting around as she tried to get her surroundings...right, underwater...good thing she'd had those lessons. So distracted and thrown for a loop, she took a breath in through her nose and instantly clasped her hands over it, coughing bubbles through her fingers as the liquid mixed with her nose and gave her a weird headache to clash with the headrush she was already coming down off of.
She was about to swim for the surface and clear her airways with a hard cough and a deep breath, but just as she was about to kick and thank god for the recent swimming practice she'd been getting in, she spotted Darren, looking far worse for ware than she was. He...he wasn't moving...come on buddy she could only hold her breath for so long..move...kick a leg...FLEX A FUCKING FINGER!? Shit shit shit shit shit! Her eyes dipped to the light above the surface. Even slowed down they'd hit hard and they were a fair bit under, and by the looks of things Darren was only getting deeper. Cursing in bubbles, she pushed herself through the thick water and pushed herself towards the sinking Darren, grasping the idiot by wherever she could, one hand on his back and dragging his jacket, the other grasping his hair. He'd probably be thankful he was unconcious for that.
Come on...come on...!
Kicking her legs hard, for the longest time she was sure she wasn't even moving, jutting her body upward with all her might, trying hard to just put something behind her. But she wasn't trained. She had barely any idea how to swim on her own let alone with a hunk of dead weight. Dragging him up to her level, she hugged his chest to hers and just kept kicking with all her might. She didn't even look up, just focused on kicking till the freshness of a breeze against her soaked head let her gasp for dear life, the unconcious Darren's head kept above water, but just barely. Now that they'd breached the surface, she was fine keeping them up even if it took some effort, her hazy eyes looking around, spotting the boat that was just done picking up people from the last jump, sailing right towards them with some confused looking coast/life guards spotting the two kids who'd dropped without a parachute. They had questions alright, but they at least saved them for once they'd dragged the two onto the boat, the weight of the water on her jumpsuit making the red head feel like a beached seal, and her soaked her making her look like some up-beat version of that girl from the ring.
"What were you kids thinking!? Did the parachutes not deploy!?" They looked over the two alarmed, but Yumi didn't exactly have time. The moment she got some air in her lungs, she was over Darren again, tapping his cheek just incase before she started pushing her palms into his chest. If UA provided one thing it was some basic fucking first aid, and sure maybe Yumi was a bit frantic to deliver it right now, but she was gonna try.
"Tell ya once this idiot's awake!" She wasn't sure if she was more angry or fearful he'd been the one to pass out on them, closing her eyes with a deep breath, and putting her lips on his as she pinched his nose, blowing air into his lungs (yes its no longer part of CPR procedure but fuck is it funny). If it didn't work, she'd repeat two more times before letting one of the more professional members of the ship take over.

Pushing up with his quirk actually did a lot less than he thought in his semi-conscious hazy state. Yumi was the one who helped him to the surface. He relaxed when his head was pulled out of the water by the panicked redhead, and so he allowed himself to fall unconscious for a bit, now that he was safe and everything, and he heard the sound of a boat. It was all right if there was a boat nearby. That meant they were being rescued, and it was his last thought.
He came back online when he felt the repeated chest presses of a still-panicked Yumi. He did not open his eyes yes. His mind was hazy, but it still knew what came after it and… Bingo, here was the lips-to-lips! It was not like a kiss at all. In fact, it made him feel how panicked and desperate Yumi was. Darren felt a little bad.
He also felt kinda pathetic, but in reality, he was very pathetic. To his (limited) credit, he decided not to keep up the charade any longer and open his eyes. “Blaaah,” he croaked. “I’m hungry.”
One might be excused for thinking this was the blondie being his usual cheeky self, but Darren really was hungry like he never was. When he pushed up to his very limits, his quirk started to burn fat instead of calories, much in the same way as Yumi. It was a lot more dangerous to spam for fitness reasons, but Darren didn’t really need to do it to keep fit. A life of delinquency and combat sports helped build both body and character, if not brains and delicacy.
His cold blue gaze switched to Yumi and he smiled weakly. Darren usually made a point of parrying slaps, but he was in no position do so if Yumi -- very justifiably -- decided it was an appropriate response to his idiotic antics.
He was trying his best to display his least slappable face, but it was still pretty slappable.
Slap or not, his brains were coming back online -- slowly -- and they know they had to figure out a way to keep out of trouble. “Yes… Parachute, Yumi, very bad. her, uh, electricity fucked the cables i think, because she, uh, released it in a panic. Yes. So I decided to stop us both with my quirk. Yes.” He nodded and looked at the military rescue men. A frogman -- the diver kind, not the quirked kind -- in full gear, palms and full suit, rebreather and oxygen bottle and googles and all the tubes looked at him dubiously.
He looked at Yumi with puppy eyes. Please please please go along with it, his eyes said. Then they coldened, wondering if ‘coldened’ was even a word, and the message they sent now was: You agreed to this too, if not I’m dragging you under the bus with me. Under pressure his deep-seated psychopathy, the origin of a fair amount of his general insanity, really shone through.
And back to the puppy eyes. What was a little friendly manipulation between skydiving buddies?

Darren getting up was enough to make Yumi's heart finally rest, and she let out a relieved sigh as she let her eyes drift to the people still looking over them, her heart freezing again when they were put on the spot about what happened, swallowing back and looking to Darren for some guidance there. She'd been tempted to punch him for that 'joke' about being hungry (something she'd later realize would have been her reaction after such a discharge herself) but right now she kinda needed his surprisingly higher-brain functions than her own to lie their way out of this, immediately latching onto his own response.
"Y-yeah! I-I discharge electricity sometimes when I get scared...thought I could hold it back but I think some loose sparks got into the bag and set something off." She gave a nervous shrug and a weak smile, hoping they'd understand / buy the lie. The two of them looked between eachother, but one sighed and broke first, throwing up his arms and turning as he muttered something. Yumi caught the tone, and the word 'quirkers', but she didn't hear the rest. The tone alone told her it wasn't good though and her heart sank a few feet. It did lift up a bit again though as the fellow shoulder punched the firsts shoulder and pointing between his eyes.
"Hey it's a quirker that saved her too. Get your act together, you know why the base is open." The first rubbed his shoulder and glared back, but a lower rank, he didn't have much he could say back. Yumi was still on her knees, taking a long breath and lowering her head a little, offering Darren a sheepish smile, her voice careful and quiet. "Guess I shoulda been more...'restrained'...hopefully they don't kick us out for this little stunt...?" She shrugged a little and rubbed her arms.
